"I had a terrible experience at The Canteen during lunch on a Saturday. My son took me there as a surprise, but we were disappointed with our meal. The weather was cold and the restaurant was not very warm. We ordered cheese on toast and a breakfast, along with two glasses of water. The option of cakes was limited, with only vegan options available on a busy Saturday. We were directed to a table at the back, but then told to move to another area. The ceiling lamps were too low, causing my son to hit his head. The table was dirty and the area was cold due to the doors constantly being opened and closed by staff. Our meals arrived and were unsatisfactory. The cheese on toast was overloaded with cheese in a sandwich, with tomato and cucumber on the side as an afterthought. My son's big breakfast looked inedible, with burnt bacon, tomatoes, and mushrooms, a blackened sausage, and hard toast. The only saving grace was the runny poached egg. The ambience was cold and dirty, with uncomfortable metal chairs. We will not be returning to The Canteen and do not recommend it."

Visited today with a group of friends. An absolute unique and quirky restaurant. The food was delicious, plentiful and averagely priced. A very worthwhile visit

The food at this restaurant is very visually appealing and quite appetizing, and it's also a great value for the price we paid. We were pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes, which were larger than expected and well presented.

Really quirky coffee shop and restaurant. I had a flat white and a croissant cake thing which was like a posh bread and butter pudding. Both were excellent and I would definitely return. The staff were charming, there was a cute area for little ones with books and toys too View menu

What an amazing place, unfortunately we arrived just as the kitchen closed however waited 10 mins and then sampled the biggest, tastiest cheese and parsley scone..delicious. The ambience was terrific, so busy with locals and visitors.cant wait to go earlier and have lunch next time. Dog friendly too

The restaurant is a bit chaotic, but the new staff just need some guidance. Our food came quickly, but there was no follow-up to ensure everything was okay. Also, be mindful that if the kitchen door is open, we can hear everything. The service was mediocre at best, but the Turkish breakfast was delicious. The new outdoor seating area might easily be overlooked. View menu

Want to still love this quirky, eclectic place but the recent re-jig has seen it go downhill for some reason… been coming for years and it used to have fab interesting menu… still lovely staff but 45 minute wait for a sandwich is a bit much!? Dirty cutlery, confused orders, gritty salad and soggy bread! Feels like you’ve forgotten the basics , guys … it’s not cheap so you have to do it well! Sorry to say won’t be rushing back.

Visited today for food. Not a good experience. Not organised minimal information on what hot food was available so opted for cake. Went for the carrot cake which was on the top of the counter uncovered took a bite and it was off. Fermented and sour absolutely awful and feel sick. Seating outside is quirky but not comfortable. I appreciate the look they are going for but unclean is not good with a cafe. This is our last time here
