"We held our two babies christening at Cafe Source last weekend. I don’t know where to start with how happy we are. From making contact with Jacqui (in the middle of Covid) she worked tirelessly with me throughout to create the perfect day, and make...sure that we had so many options (depending on where we would be with restrictions when the day arrived) we ended up having our function on the tables outside and it was amazing. Gary the groundskeeper at Hillhead Sports Club couldn’t have been more helpful with assisting me to organise entertainment for the kids. Jacqui’s organisation and help was second to none. The day was absolutely perfect, the food was amazing, staff were fabulous and I can’t thank them enough."

"Has this establishment changed owners. After my visit today I am gobsmacked as to how dirty the ladies toilets and hallway leading to them were . The actual toilets and hand basins were clean , but the skirting boards and walls within the toilets and hallway were very very grubby and stained . I have eaten here quite a few times and enjoyed the food previously. So glad I had not booked today as the attention to cleanliness has clearly changed. Disappointing"

"Prefect dining experience. Greeted promptly at the door on arrival and shown to a seat in the bar area. Everything you would expect, staff who knew what they were talking about and genuinely cared/ had a passion for the industry. We had the 5 course sample menu and it didn’t disappoint each course packed with flavour and great wine descriptions. Each course was talked through and had so many different taste elements I was in heaven. They even wrote a birthday plate for me! I would return. The only thing which I felt knocked a star off was the decor, it was dated and in parts felt disjointed. I felt for a Michelin star wine coolers on make shift tables at the pole seemed like an afterthought, I would have expected a custom built unit to house them or something that actually fitted. …That carpet needs to go!"

"We went on the spur of the moment when in the area and it was quite busy. The waitress received us in her gym wear which felt a bit unprofessional (too much information for a gastropub if you ask me). We ordered the pasta with duck and the steak pie which was literally that: meat in a pie. The waitress came with the potatoes, put two on the plate and asked if we wanted any more... The plate looked pretty empty. Our shock was when the truffle fries came... With truffle mayo and the waiter said: you didn't think it'd be real truffle! Of course we didn't but you can have truffle oil and parmesan, The Ivy makes a lovely one and you are charging us the same price! On top of that my husband hates mayo so I wish we didn't ordered them. Make sure your phone has charge as might need it to read the menu. Not very impressed. "Since March 23 this pub has been operating under a sub lease from Star Inns (Heineken been sublet to a pub company (WJS who in turn install managers, so 3 businesses trying to take revenue from one country pub. This has been a disaster for our village, we are on our 5th management team since March and we all hope the middle men WJS just disappear, they are the problem in the equation and continue to be so. However The current management team of Andy and Laura are doing a magnificent job. The pub is now clean, the food menu has been brilliantly refreshed with some magnificent seafood specials and they have recruited a very good team. In short Andy and Laura have massively turned this business around and is back to what it was, a wonderful local. Last night, lovely log fire, bar packed with locals (first time since March! and a wonderful atmosphere. Quite rightly this establishment has had some very well deserved horrendous reviews since March. (WJS hold your heads in shame and leave our village as soon as possible, horrible and unworkable business model However Andy and Laura are doing a magnificent job, the place is brilliant and anyone looking at previous reviews should ignore them and return to this now reinvigorated pub! "Booked a table for a Sunday (17/09/23 afternoon for my Grandmothers birthday, we had seen good reviews and were hopeful for a lovely meal. We were sat down on a sticky table, ordered drinks, and eventually ordered food. Despite having very few customers (after 3:30pm we were often forgotten about. Starters and mains came out and were adequate (if a little cold . We ordered desserts which were disappointing and coffees that tasted burnt. When we finally asked for the bill, we were again forgotten and had to ask again, and when it eventually came had been charged a whopping £100.05 for a single trifle. When this mistake was pointed out, there was no apology, no explanation of an accident or anything. Due to this sour response, we requested the service charge be removed too. The staff member then huffed and stomped away very rudely. As someone who has worked in the hospitality industry I was disgusted and embarrassed to have brought my family here for a celebration. So upsetting. My advice would be check your bills carefully if you attend. (Attached is the £100.05 trifle itself (which was definitely not worth it!"

"My partner and I had a fantastic evening here. The staff have exceptional customer service. Never once had to wait a long time to be seated served or topped up. The food it absolutely gorgeous. Cooked so perfectly and presentation was outstanding. I we can't wait to come back soon and try something new on the menu. AND to top it off we had a beautiful bottle of white wine and 2 for 1 cocktails. Very happy customers Food: 5"

"We ate here this evening whilst staying in the hotel. When we went to book a table in the restaurant (they don’t take walk-ins even for hotel guests) we were informed that there were no tables for another two hours. As we are frequent travellers and had only booked the hotel a few hours earlier I decided to book, what a mistake I made; even during the process of creating the booking the gentleman walked away to fix a card machine for a colleague. With a one year old baby this was less than ideal but we happily went back at 8pm. We were then made to stand in a queue for another 10 minutes before we were seated. They had forgotten the requested highchair so we reminded the gentleman and he said he’d go and get it. Another 20 minutes later our very helpful waitress arrived to take our drinks order and apologised profusely when we pointed out the missing highchair. Generally the service across the restaurant was poor with a clear lack of management or communication. I’d assume something went really wrong with their service this evening as I don’t remember seeing such poor service for many years. The food was ok when it arrived and the waitress seemed to work hard to make up for the problems we had seen early on. Overall service was 1/5 but through no fault of our hard working waitress. Food quality 3/5 average for a Doubletree. Value for money 1/5 they were charging £32.95 for a steak and £4.50 for a Coke! Almost tourist trap prices, and that’s from somebody who stays in Hilton brand properties several times per month. I’ll review the hotel separately upon checkout and I’ll update Flyertalk also but the poor F&B service has unfortunately let the whole hotel down."

"What a pleasant surprise. Had heard mixed reviews about this place so I went 2 Sundays In a row to check this place out. Sunday lunch and desert. Easily the best Sunday lunch in the area, yes the food is fantastic but also nice big tables, big plates, sharp knifes (some I've been do it's about as sharp as a butter knife). Lovely staff and reasonable price as well. Parking is very easy and already booking for next week. Well.done B8 Service: Dine in"

"My son and I went here for lunch, our first Mothers Day together for many years because of his commitments. We both ordered steak and ale pie with vegetables and chips. Probably the best pie I have ever had and the vegetables and chips were cooked to perfection. We then retired to the bar for brandy and coffee. Absolute perfection! The pub is so cosy and the lady and gentleman who served us were lovely without being intrusive. Thank you so much Red Lion for helping to make my Mother's Day special."

"We wandered here as we didn't know most of the restaurants shut on a Wednesday. What a blessing in disguise, thankfully we popped in early. Staff offered us a table despite us not having a reservation. Whilst throughout the evening, they were turning customers away. There were only two staff members working and the female staff was so polite and friendly. We ordered the salmon, mussels and scallops for our starters. For our main, we ordered the mushroom pasta from the specials menu, the pork dish and the turbot fish dish. Everything exceeded our expectations. The only reason why I held back one star was, my main was on the tiny portion side and tables were compacted and right next to one another. We absolutely loved the complimentary starter and chocolate truffles at the end. The mussels cooked with curry and coconut was very flavoursome too. Scallops didn't seem too fresh, salmon starter was pretty but nothing too special. Would definitely return again one day to try their dessert, we were too stuffed for much else. Any reason for not a full set of stars is, I believe its not a step free access restaurant as there were stairs leading up to the restaurant. "An exceptionally nice bistro. First time visit with my wife and could not fault it. Spotlessly clean, welcomed by a friendly host. Two menus to choose from, one a special for two people which looked good value but we decided to go from the main menu. It couldn't have been better, ordered steaks and they were cooked exactly as we requested. The vegetables were also good, fresh and freshly cooked. The creme brulé sweet was exceptional. Prices were reasonable, and on a par with mid range restaurants. Oh, and the background music was not intrusive and easy listening. Yes, we will most definitely be making a return visit."
