"I’ve had the Tastecard a little while now, but never got around to using it. The restaurants featured on the program are largely chain-based. Or not very good ones. So this is my first experience with that in hand. BananaTree is located in the heart of Soho making it an ideal spot to catch up with a friend from the office. The deal meant buy-one-get-one-free so we had a lot of food for not a lot. A good start. Our order consisted of the chicken wings, money bags along with our mains of the beef rendang curry and the pad thai. The fried wings are very good. Messy, sticky and lots of sauce. They offer a recipe for their tantalising wings on their website. It all looks well and good and I get excited up to a point. Then I realise, and decide it’s too many ingredients and too much work. It is one of the most popular appetisers at Banana Tree, and easy to understand why. The rendang was just above average, the meat tasted a bit dry and there wasn’t enough curry for my liking. The beef is quite chunky, and of good quality so its got that going for it. Banana Tree feels like yet another whitewashed Asian-inspired food restaurant in London. Others that come to mind: East Street and Dim T. Dishes across Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam all meld into one being rather than having each of its own elements celebrated. The first store opened a staggering twenty one years ago and now its eight stores it may have traded that authenticity with domination. The venue at Banana Tree has a nice, vibrant atmosphere and this is only completed by the size of the crowd. It’s plenty busy and a popular haunt for some of the other corporate dwellers from the looks of it. I didn’t find the find innovative but it was tasty."

"I booked a table online for 7 people in the evening after a performance at the theatre (5 mins walk to the Lyric theatre). When booking online if the time you’d like isn’t an option to select just put it in the special request box. When we arrived we waited a few minutes to be seated and our waitress took our orders within about 8/9 minutes. They have a QR code on the table that you scan to view the menu and pay. The restaurant did have paper(physical menus) which helped so much just ask your waiter. Food was so tasty and seasoned very well. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal I personally recommend the Prawn Laksa, a fair amount of large prawns given too I’m rather knowledgeable about laksa anyway and this was rather authentic. The chicken dumplings are absolutely scrumptious !! The beef rendang was a little bit dry but tasty albeit. I had the chicken thai green curry as a main and I expected the sauce to be a tad thicker as I’m used to that. This was almost like a broth. Still tasty and lots of veg. Everyone’s mains were rather large/generous portions so much so that we asked for a few takeaway containers. The only reason I haven’t rated this 5 ’s is because of the cocktail I had which was a ‘Rangoon Zombie’ it’s supposed to be a strong cocktail but honestly it tasted like very sweet fruit juice, little to no alcohol at all I didn’t even finish it because it was so sickly sweet. Happy hour is also all day, everyday. It’s a very casual restaurant and quite relaxed don’t need to dress up at all and the seating is quite close, we had a bench and the bench beside almost looked as if we were all together. Overall 4 4.5 . I would visit again. Pictured: prawn laksa, Thai green curry and my cocktail £36pp service charge is optional"

"This was an interesting experience. We had booked 5 people on groupon, for £23 pp, which included a 3 course meal, glass of prosecco, and the show. One of our party fell sick that day, so couldn 't join us as we had paid in advance we wanted to make sure we were still served her food so we wouldn 't waste any money. The woman at the door said this was fine but we were to let our server know. Our waitress introduced herself and poured our glasses of prosecco I had to ask for a top up as it wasn 't a full glass, but she politely obliged. She said it was no problem about our missing guest and that we would still be served her food. We were served our starters very soon after sitting down, which were good but lukewarm, probably due to sitting around in the kitchen after being pre prepared but couldn 't really expect anything else. We had to ask again for the waitress to serve the missing guest 's starter dish, but she did bring it eventually. The show was good in addition to the host/presenter singer, there were only 3 different acts, but they were all skilful and professional probably the highlight of the night. Our waitress had told us filming was not strictly encouraged, but if it was just on our phones then it was fine. However during one of the acts I was told off by another waitress for taking a snapchat (despite everyone else having their phones out). The meal was served throughout the show during the intervals. We asked for the bill before the end of the show to avoid the rush of everyone trying to pay at the same time. The waitress brought the bill we had purchased an additional 4 glasses of wine, at £5 £9 each, but after our groupon discount, the outstanding amount to pay was a whopping £120 something! We called the waitress back and told her there was a problem. Firstly, there was an extra £10 drink that no one had ordered, and all of the sizes of our wine glasses were wrong. They had also charged us £3 for a 'brochure ' (which we had no intention of buying), and a 12.5% service charge, despite our party of 5 being under the 6 person minimum for this obligation (as detailed in the T&Cs). Most obviously though, there was a charge for £63 Saturday night which didn 't make sense to any of us. Our waitress was unable to explain the additional items on the bill, so called her manager over. The manager sat down at our table and asked what the problem was. I explained the £63 charge shouldn 't be there, and she tried telling us that it was the cancellation fee for our friend that couldn 't make it. I explained that there should be no cancellation fee, as we still made use of all the food we had paid for in advance. Then she changed her story to it being the full price of 1 person 's ticket, as there is no voucher for a single person on groupon , but we showed her our booking confirmation and that we had indeed paid £23 for everyone. She resigned and told us it must be a mistake. We explained the other errors on the bill and she quickly agreed to get rid of them. One final thing to watch out for all the waitresses ask that you give the venue a 5 star review on tripadvisor, and mention the waitress by name, in order to receive a free shot. Looking through the tripadvisor reviews, it 's clear everyone fell victim to this scheme and explains why the reviews are so consistently high! The fuss with the bill certainly put a dampener on the night, but at least, after the initial struggle, it was quickly resolved by the (somewhat reluctant) manager. I wouldn 't have paid the full £55ish pp price for this night, but given we had only spent £23 , it was a good night. It would have received a 4/5 star review for this price if the issues with the bill and the tripadvisor bribe had not happened. If you go here, make sure to keep an eye out for surcharges on the bill!"
