"My first afternoon tea at Oakley Court about three years ago was wonderful. I took my Mum and she enjoyed all the quirky refinements that came with the experience i.e. quirky tea cosy. The next time, a couple of years ago, the refinements were no longer there, and this last experience on Saturday December was not special at all. There was little or no ambience, the sandwiches tasted like they had been prepared some hours before our visit, the cakes were tasteless and lacking in variety and, whilst the scones were served warm, they were dry and also tasteless. The raspberry jam was also very runny and not like a preserve at all. I am not a tea drinker, but the friends I was with are. They were served a couple of pots of tea each, so were able to keep refilling their cups. I asked for hot chocolate and was brought one small cup of my requested beverage, which was tepid at best. I was not offered another cup, so had to attract the attention of a waitress to request a pot of hot chocolate so I too had the opportunity of refilling my cup. Again, the hot chocolate was served only just warm and went cold very quickly. I feel very sad that Afternoon Tea at Oakley Court is no longer the treat it used to be, especially as the hotel is set in such a lovely location. It is certainly extremely overpriced for what you get and I have no plans to return for afternoon tea again in the future."

"We entered because I fancied a bowl of chips and a drink before travelling back to Newcastle. We kindly asked if we could order just them and who believe was the owner came across showing us the size of a bowl of chips wanting to make it clear that we couldn 't. I then said to my partner to get a hot-dog and chips each since I didn 't fancy anything else and I didn 't want to be rude leaving without ordering something. Well, my boyfriend turned himself towards the owner to order and he came over and said something similar to turn back as you were and look at me in the eyes to take the order . While he was ordering he said that we also wanted 2 bottles of WATER, at that point the owner started to make a joke out of my boyfriend 's accent (being from the North of England , and keep repeating the word water multiples times (with sentences like is this the way you say it? Water? , first just in front of us (which might have been okay and then in front of his staff and the other customers there. From the moment that the owner thought it was fine to tell us how and in which way to order and took the mickey out of our accent, I thought it was fine for us to immediatly cancel the order and take ourself where customers are treated as deserved.I would like to remind the owner that the customer is the person who pays your wage, if you don 't enjoy serving people then maybe you should change your job (and attend an accelerated english course on the english language, since taking the **** when you are the first who can 't speak it doesn 't make you a genius .Anyway, bad, unpleasent and terrible experience I have ever had in a Restaurant ."

"Mixed experience. Had a booking, restaurant still on a Monday afternoon, took 5 minutes for someone to come to us at the desk, and when she did she barely said hello, just looked at us with a scowl. After that sat at table for 15 minutes waiting for someone to eat over. Eventually got order in, waitress didn't even ask if we wanted anything to drink. We were there 30 minutes before we actually got a drink. Not really acceptable in a quiet restaurant, that was closing in less than an hour closes early on a Monday. Food was good when it came, and different waitress by now, who was so much better. So a mixed bag. I know staff difficulties at present, but 10 minutes training in fundamentals would help. As would have someone in charge on the floor to ensure paying customers are being looked after. Poor management from what I saw. Pity, as some of the staff were great, others very poor. "The Dutches of Cornwall is an impressive looking inn in the slightly surreal environs of Poundbury, King Charles’ pet sociological experiment. It doesn’t have much competition in the immediate area and is or should be something of a flagship for the Hall and Woodhouse brewery that is based just up the road in Blandford. The setting, decor and general ambience are all excellent. The staff are youthful, smiley and mostly enthusiastic. The rooms are well appointed, comfortable and, particularly given the recent cold snap, warm and cosy. The bed and breakfast deal I got also represented fantastic value for money, particularly once you throw in the complementary drink from your room. What’s not to like? Well, we combined our overnight stay with Sunday lunch. It all looked promising. We, however, waited quite a while between being seated and being spoken to by waiting staff. “Sorry for the wait”. My pescatarian wife wanted the Hake. “Sorry, there’s no Hake left”. Our booking was at 1:30, not, I would suggest, late in the day. Not wanting fish and chips again , she opted for the No Nut Roast. I went for the Roast Beef ‘served pink’ . We perhaps confused the issue by ordering starters arancini and beetroot cured smoked salmon. Both were delicious. We then waited quite a while for our starters to be cleared. Eventually, my wife asked someone to clear our table. We then waited for our main courses. We waited. We watched other table’s mains come and go. We waited. We asked after our mains and moments later they appeared. ‘Sorry for the wait”. All looked Okay although my beef wasn’t pink. I tried it and it was a bit tough and beginning to dry out. Had I guessed, I would have thought they may have been waiting under a warming lamp for a while. We mentioned it to a waitress, who said she’d ‘tell chef’ and get me some more, pink beef. We waited. Unsure whether I should continue to eat my veg, I asked a waitress and she said to carry on eating I’d just be getting some more pink beef. Eventually, 4 succulent pink slices of rare roast beef appeared. Joy. When asked by the duty manager ? if everything was OK, the waiting, string of apologies and the over done beef were highlighted and he, again, apologised and kindly removed the cost of our main courses from the bill. Whilst I feel this was good and absolutely the correct response, I would clearly have rather have had a good meal served in a timely way the first time round. Breakfast looked promising but, again, a few items typically those we requested were unavailable. No baked eggs ? and no plain yoghurt. I am not sure who eats Toffee yoghurt at breakfast, of which there was a plentiful supply, other than, perhaps 6 year olds. It was also sad to see streaky rather than back bacon included in the Full English Breakfast and my bacon bap . Is this pandering to the American audience, do you think? A bit pernickety perhaps. Overall, a lovely stay was tarnished somewhat by some poor catering and a limited number of young staff who, whilst trying hard, lacked effective supervision; I would suggest that many of the delays we experienced could have been avoided by a good ‘maitre d’hotel’ or ‘floorwalker’ directing staff to clear away, prepare tables or identify when folk had been waiting too long. We would certainly give the Duchess of Cornwall another go if only for the exceptional value for money of the overnight stay and hope that the duty manager’s assurances that what we found was not representative of their usual high standards to be the case."

"I absolutely love the fact that they serve breakfast all day! I honestly wish more places would do this. I always eat breakfast at different times. Sometimes you feel like eggs or porridge in the afternoon. Good on them! It was quiet on a Tuesday late afternoon early evening. Very hot day. As per most branches, wooden country cottage feel interior. For me, LPQ have always been hit and miss with any branch you visit, be it food quality, service or cleanliness. Branch was clean. Staff were really pleasant and friendly and service was fast (I am guessing this was because they were quiet). Good menu from all day breakfast to tartines, salads, breads, soups, juices, pastries, desserts and more. Vegan's are well catered for. I had the scrambled eggs on toast with roasted portobello mushrooms and a fresh orange juice. The breakfast came with two big slices of toasted bread and a side of butter. The portion size was big which justifies the price. Not cheap at all! Well presented and freshly made. Yes, I could have made this at home. Nothing out of the ordinary but nice. As I said staff were nice and happy for me to use the free wifi and do some work at the same time. I don't often frequent this branch but came by a few months ago as well when were in lockdown C-19 pandemic and got the spinach and pine nut swirl take away which was also good. Filling and tasty and not greasy. They even threw in free chocolates as it was near Easter. Let's be honest, LPQ do well on plain and simple home comforts. Nothing out of the ordinary. Branches have a nice atmosphere and staff are pleasant most of the time. Food and cleanliness are hit and miss."
