"The Last Visit. Many moons ago we were big fans of the Battersea branch and frequent, and always satisfied, visitors. However, last night's experience at the larger Balham branch will be our last to either Gazette. In summary, the food continues to be lardy French and delicious but the service and whole experience left a bitter taste in the mouth. This place has set its stall out and for what you're paying, one would expect more. Booked table for 9.15, only to find that table was given away (without apology, just a we didn't know how long your wife was going to be even though they had been told a couple of mins). "there are many great things about this restaurant and I'm not sure where to start. that is probably one of my best restaurants in Great Britain. not only eating is great, but also the architecture, the mood and service of this restaurant are simply excellent. each room has a very unique and beautiful furnishings. it was good that we decided to have a glass of wine in the first floor before we go to the dining room. it was right after the celebration of the East Bank, so I was told by a waiter that it was much more relaxed today. we then went into a dining room and got a place on the window. we could see beautiful nature with a beautiful ochsen. all waiters were friendly and welcoming. we had a cure for and we thought it was literally a bargain for such a great experience in the peculiar place and in it did a delicious meal. we will be here soon, hopefully we would like to stay in the hotel!"

"Rhubarb is our go-to stopping point when visiting the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Set in the gorgeous Prestonfield House, even before you get to the beautifully decorated dining room, you are wandering around the beautifully landscaped gardens. Once inside, there is an a la carte menu of deliciousness, and during the Edinburgh Fringe, they have a three-course table d'hote menu, which never disappoints in terms of choice, value or quality. There are few restaurants we would return to time and time again, but Rhubarb is one we certainly will. "During a recent stay to Kirkby Lonsdale, we chose to have dinner at Plato’s. Our table was tucked in a corner, which unfortunately didn’t allow us to view the open plan kitchen. We chose the Appetizers of olives and sourdough bread instead of any Starters. This, for us, was a wise decision because the main courses are very ample portions and were sufficient for us not to even request a view of the Desserts menu. Our main courses of belly pork and the chicken were excellent quality and well presented. My wife requested to swap out the pearl barley for colcannon instead and this was done with no issues. Unfortunately our first choice of wine was not available but an adequate alternative was offered and provided. Service provided by the barman and waitress was courteous and exemplary adding to the experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending Plato’s as an excellent dining venue in Kirkby Lonsdale."

"visited the hoose for Mother's Day meal, very first time.....have very impressed to say! after a mix with the book, the waitress found us a table above! liked the ambiente des ortes, with music games. the menu choices were excellent as the wein. after ordering Turkey/Ham roast, with circumcisions, the waiting time was definitely worth. our dinners came hot and very well cooked and the portions were very generous. I chose the strawberry cheesecake with two spoons as I was full. £18 for two courses was very reasonable, for quality and content! great scream for ross who looked around us, excellent service and a real nice guy! well recommended and we will visit again"

"This was the most disappointing tea experience we had in the UK. I wanted our last afternoon to be special and really do it up with a fancy afternoon tea experience to round out our vacation. After pouring over reviews and photos I settled on Prestonfield. We reached the rather remote location and were fairly quickly ushered upstairs to a lavishly, if not garishly, decorated room filled with sofas and tea tables. It was very dark and overstuffed with furniture. Being August, I had assumed we would be seated outside because of all the pictures I had seen online, but the weather was a bit iffy that day, so inside we were. There was a family slouched around one of the sofa sections as we entered which was not the upscale atmosphere I was looking for based on the price and location. We were seated in a corner with a loveseat and armchairs and 2 low tables. Our server was very attentive and explained everything in detail (except that the portions were massive) and we all ordered One tea each which turned out to be way too much food. The food itself was lackluster, but there was plenty of it. There were actual buckets of scones. I had the champagne add on for 15 pounds which was just a scant pour. We were also treated to another large family being seated right next to us with kids running around and playing videos on speakerphone. In short it was NOT the experience I had hoped a 50 pound tea would provide. If you decide to try it based on the glowing reviews here and on TripAdvisor, just be sure to determine where you will be seated (all the views are downstairs with the windows and light and there are actual tables to sit at). It did not look a thing like the pictures online. And don 't order more than one tea per person. You will be bagging up dry scones to go. Honestly I wouldn 't bother."

"Terrible. Went for Champagne Afternoon tea on a Saturday. Arrived early and was put into a small room to the left and waited. Assumed this was a waiting room as we were early. A waiter finally showed up 20 minutes later and asked if we were there for the afternoon tea and then dropped two menus on the coffee table and walked away. 10 minutes later he came back and explained the menu and dietarys. We advised that we disliked 2 items, so he said these would be switched. The waiter then brought a tray and set up the coffee table for service. This was confusing as we'd booked into the restaurant, not a drawing room. The seats were uncomfortable to sit for 2 hours and the fire went out so it became cold quickly. We then got our tea, but we had to ask again for the glass of champagne, we finally got this 1 hour after arriving. When the afternoon tea food arrived, it was average at best. Definitely not worth the money. They hadn't switched the items we didn't want and some of the food was inedible. The salmon sandwich finger was good and couple of the dessert items were good. The scones were very dry and hard, they hadn't even been warmed. The carrot cake was also very dry. Once we ate we then waited for someone to come by so we could ask for the bill. No one came past again, so we got up and went to the desk to settle the bill and leave. Overall very poor, definitely not worth the £65 per person. Avoid."
