"We were the first table seated and the service was very prompt with catering to our needs. We had the octopus and scallops as a starter. About 5 minutes later food was out. The scallops out of the two dishes were the winner. Great depth of flavour great balance of salt to sweet to sour and the nduja added that hint of spice. The octopus was also good. Nice cook on the Octo and we'll balance I just felt it needed a bit more depth to hit the palate correctly. On to the mains but before that can someone please turn off the alarm from the staircase right beside us please, it's so Annoying. Wild boar Ragu for me and lobster for the Mrs. Again I chose the winning dish. The lobster dish was semi drowning in a water puddle of flavourful broth. We both wished they would of rendered/reduce, thicken that broth to make remove it from its homogeneous state. The Ragu the best of the two dishes wasn't wowsers but, still good. I would of loved a bit more acidity and a layer of fat left behind on my tongue. It was simple and nice which makes it a great dish. Tell you what doesn't make it a great dish when the staff is laying down the law to what seemed to be a new staff memember who decided to wear his own vest coat to work when he shouldn't have. We were the only ones in the restaurant so we were the only ones who witnessed it but, not the right time or place for it. After they sent him to the corner for timeout the staff brought out a nice mango dessert to excuse for the Loud beeping which had still been running loud throughout the whole service. Overall a decent meal you pay for the premium of the location. Would I come again, yes but with a game plan and an extra vest coat"

"Interestingly, despite being an Italian restaurant, they did not offer any Italian beer, only Spanish and German options. Moving on to the main course, although the portions were small, the dish was absolutely delicious! I enjoyed butternut squash and goat cheese tortellini, which were generously stuffed with goat cheese and adorned with walnuts. On the other hand, I also tried the duck dish. While it was well-cooked and satisfying in quantity, I believe it would have benefited from being served warm and sliced. A sharper knife might have improved the presentation. Nonetheless, the duck itself was perfectly cooked. The food we had was truly delightful, showcasing high-quality ingredients. That said, I felt the menu was rather limited; it was quite concise with around 20 dishes total, from starters to desserts. In comparison, many other Italian restaurants offer extensive menus that tantalize the palate. Moreover, I found it somewhat presumptuous—and a bit annoying—that a 10% service charge was automatically added to the bill without prior notice. I typically prefer to leave a tip based on the service I received, and being compelled to pay an extra amount diminished the overall experience. While the service was good and I appreciate the efforts of the staff, I believe that tips should be a personal decision made by the diner rather than a forced obligation. Overall, the food was excellent, and I may return, but I hope for a few improvements next time."

"We 've loved Balans for years and have made a point of visiting whenever we are in London. So I never thought I 'd write a negative review but unfortunately here it is. We were in for breakfast on Saturday and were very disappointed. There were issues (none major but nevertheless significant) with just about every item of food. When we were asked how the meal was I commented that we were very disappointed and that it wasn 't up to the usual standard. However the only response was 'I 'm sorry to hear that '. No questions were asked about why we were disappointed. No effort made to rectify the situation. Indeed the manager (who was on a stool at the bar when we came in) remained (on her perch) for the entire time we were there. We didn 't want much. We weren 't after any kind of compensation or recompense. We simply wanted to be respected as paying customers. In addition there were a large number of servers/waiters. Probably around five or six but they weren 't terribly attentive. They spent a lot of time chatting and certainly not checking on tables. As I didn 't recognise any of them I guess they are relatively new and still training, which is fair enough. But then the manager needs to be far more involved ensuring standards are maintained. We are back in London later in the week and (as I said) would normally be going to Balans, but now we really are not sure. With new places opening up all the time in Kensington I can see Balans really struggling which would be a great shame. But for now it isn 't anything like how it used to be and for us the joy of a meal at Balans has gone."
