"On a recent city break to Belfast, my wife and I, our son and his partner decided to use McHughs Bar as our venue for Dinner on our first evening in the city. We'd been unable to get through to the bar to book a table so decided to take a chance and turn up anyway. We got there about 7pm only to find that the Kitchen had been closed for renovations a short time earlier. Luckily, we decided to make a booking for the following night at 6;30 and left to find somewhere to eat. That evening was our only disappointing meal in Belfast, I won't mention where we ended up but suffice it to say it wasn't a place to return to as the service was terrible and there were a number of discrepancies with our orders. The next night however was a revelation, good plain irish cooking served in one of the oldest buildings in Belfast and by some very friendly and helpful staff. Thank you"

Quite simply, the greatest bowl of Irish Stew I have ever had in my life. I need say nothing more. Wonderful!

Very interesting place with a storied past. Food and drinks were inexpensive and large servings. I would say the food was OK, nothing extra but perfectly acceptable.

We enjoyed the beer at this restaurant, but were unable to get a meal because we didn't make a reservation in advance. The food must be good since we visited during the week. The staff was very friendly. Next time, we will be sure to make a reservation for a meal.

While exploring Belfast for the day, we came across this lovely pub on our way back to the hotel. The atmosphere, food, service, and live music were all excellent. I would have given it a perfect 5 stars, but my fish pie had more potato than fish. The bar staff were fantastic in helping me choose some local beers to sample.

I had the lamb chops (3) w mashed potatoes veggies. My wife had the chicken supreme w potatoes veggies. Both were good. Service was excellent. The upstairs seating was not available, so we ate adjacent to the bar on the first floor. They have traditional music Fri/Sat/Sun. Located across from Custom House Square Glider station.

As a family of four adults, we all agreed that this restaurant was not a great place for food or ambiance. The food was bland and uninspired, and while it was passable, it wouldn't be a top choice for us to return. The restaurant had a nice old-fashioned pub feel, but could use some maintenance as evidenced by the messy men's restroom. A simple clean-up and some upkeep would have greatly improved the dining experience. Overall, the experience was just okay. The staff, however, were very helpful, pleasant, and friendly, which is why we are giving this restaurant 3 stars.

Had been to McHughs many times for a meal and was always delighted with the food. Hadn't been in a number of years however. It was my sons graduation at the Waterfront hall last week so seemed an ideal nearby restaurant for a celebration meal afterwards. Unfortunately the food didn't live up to previous expectations. The cheesy garlic bread was basically cheese on toast, literally plain bread with cheese on it, not well toasted so greasy and limp. My wife had the chicken curry which she found very bland. The chips with my cheese burger and my son's cod were greasy and undercooked. Not the best dining experience and I don't see us rushing back.
