"Amazing food , fine dining , easy to find , glass of champagne was really lovely and despite being offered wine list before seeing the food choice , staff were helpful and attentive . Delectable canapés were served with drinks which were so flavoursome and then the amuse bouchée was a riot of flavour see photos for what they were we ate al la crate and the crab tarte and venison tartare were spot on . Mains of lamb medium and so tender and broccoli textures followed and were also high quality . Dessert was sublime choux pastry with peanut butter ice cream and carrot cake kind of deconstructed was followed by Egyptian mint tea and beautiful petit fours we were suitably stuffed and our waitress suggested we could take them home of this was the case ! For the food we ate , texture , quality , presentation this was fantastic and reasonably priced . My only gripe would be the music did not fit with the experience of the food playlist did not fit the ambiance."

"Went there for the first time and literally the food was below standers 0/10. Lamb was unbreakable. Even i called the manager to show that its not fresh he replied"you know their taste and stuff. Kebabs were smelly. Spent more than 80 pounds and left restaurant without a single apology. Avoid. "The staff as normal were fabulous, however our main courses were very disappointing, I had the grouse and it was severely undercooked, the waitress had said that it comes pink which I have no problem with, in fact I don’t mind my meat pink, however the breast was seared on one side then from there all the way through it was just raw, they hadn’t even seared both sides, it looked like a piece of raw liver is the only way to describe it. My hubby gave me a piece of his lamb and I gave him my grouse breast, but it was even too raw for him and he wouldn’t eat it. His lamb was no better again the waitress informed us that it comes pink, again no problem but again it was undercooked, the steak knife struggled to cut it and it was a poor cut of meat. The waitress offered to have it recooked but by that time I’d eaten most of the meal (except the meat) and I wasn’t prepared to wait for 3 small pieces of meat to be brought back to us. The mushroom part was also awful, there were no mushroom caps, just the woody underneath of it and it tasted nasty is I also left that so all I had was the potatoes and broccoli. We had been only visited weeks before and I’d had the grouse and it was amazing, I honestly can’t think what went wrong. We also had to wait over 20 minutes for our desserts (both of which were cold) for saying it was 3 courses we were there over 2 hours. I know we won’t be visiting again for a while."

"Had a wonderful stay here this weekend. Situated just a short walk from the town centre this place is definitely worth a visit. Made to feel welcome the moment we checked in right through to when we checked out had out suitcase carried out to the car. The staff really do go that extra mile to make you feel welcome comfortable. Such a cosy pub with a fabulous atmosphere. The breakfast is super, made with quality ingredients cooked to perfection by the amazing, friendly/cheeky chefs. The room was clean tidy with everything you need for a short stay. Will return again in the future."

"Well, what a nice place, the bus stop is just over the road, breakfast was really nice the staff could not do enough for you, going back Nov, and will stop there again, In fact, every time i go to matlock area, if they can get me in, i will stop there. Rooms: Rooms are great, lots of room, well kept reall nice and warm cozy, i was in No 7, there was a bath shower ,what a lovely soak. Walkability: It is on a big hill,if you have a car, no probs, if you dont, busses from Matlock take you it, bus stop over road). Food drinks: Fantastic, The steaks were the best i have tasted, no bull, The Best."

"I visited the Orangery last week for an afternoon tea for my Grandma's birthday. When I booked, I specifically booked the Easter themed afternoon tea, but when it arrived it was nothing like the menu specified on the website. The online menu included 4 different sandwiches and 4 different cakes, however we were served only 3 of each. I was charged £43.90 for less than the usual afternoon tea menu. Furthermore, the member of staff who served us did not wait to explain what the sandwiches and cakes even were, nor did any member of staff ever return to check if we needed anything; I had to ask myself for extra milk. There were no teaspoons given with our tea so we had to retrieve one from another table. The website states that the menu is subject to change, however I think it is outrageous that I have been charged extra for a reduced menu, as I have paid more, and received less. I am extremely disappointed by this experience, which was meant to be a birthday gift and a very special occasion. Furthermore, I have been in contact with them twice about this, and have had no response from either email."

"I visited on Tuesday and had the laughs pate and it was nice. a clobier pate served as two snakes with full grain bread and meerrettich. unfortunately on Thursday it was very different. a pot with smooth, very creamy pate white bread and a kind salsa, reasonable, but not what I expected and not what is on the menu. the lamb salad was beautiful, but very different from last time I had it. Previously, the spicing on the lamb was a dry ruin, there was a decent amount of yogurt dressing and a generous pot mango chutney, this time it was more like a sauce on the meat, the yogurt was just a splash and the mango chutney in a very small dish. version one was better, and had much more lamming. resistance, please! I recommend something and at the end disappointed or worse apologize my friends, it's embarrassing."

"we booked hodgkinson on the basis of previous reviews and were not disappointed. a charming hotel that preserves many of its historical features. zoe was helpful throughout the entire owner/growth and eating was simple, healthy and well cooked. the restaurant is small but not crowded and there was a feeling of greeting rest. we hope for a return and stay next time in one of the rooms of the hotel, each individually decorated."

"Beautiful Matlock Bath next to the River Derwent... so pretty. We stayed at Hodgkinsons Hotel for extended weekend, a fab stay it was! Chris Zoe were very welcoming nothing was too much trouble. This is a listed building so is quirky quaint with History apparent, yet is comfortable, beautifully decorated, with all you could wish for. Each room is very individual. We stayed in the BRETBY . Delightfully olde worlde but with all modern convenience. Top quality Tea/Coffee, Hot Choc/biscuits, provided also loose tea fresh coffee with cafetiere! Slippers dressing gowns also provided we were in a classic double. Linen was crisp fresh. Room was warm comfortable was spotlessly clean. Must also mention two so comfy armchairs! Made me actually SIT IN MY ROOM! Breakfast was wonderful beautifully presented with a very substantial choice. Everything from Full English to Eggs benedict- all cooked to perfection. Cereal fresh fruit salad also! Local ingredients wherever possible. Excellent. Allocated parking ensures you have your very own space! Invaluable on a busy weekend! Stay Here. Lovely place. Nicer people. Thankyou see you again!."

"we visited the evening of the winter and were immediately deceived by the fire in the characterful bar. the staff was friendly and efficient. we enjoyed a drink in the bar and then went through the dining room. I always feel the cold, but that was also warm and comfortable. that was all excellent. I am vegetarian, and my options were more original than I often, and were really tasteful. the personal was discreetly attentive and always knew who had ordered the court. they were also enthusiastic and knowledgeable about this historic building. everything in everything, an unforgettable evening."

"I tried the Sunday buffet, and I have to say, it was quite disappointing. The absence of properly set tables made the place feel closed down. The food was displayed in small heated servers, and the descriptions for the curries were written on star-shaped card cutouts with a felt pen, which didn't inspire much confidence. I ordered chapatis, but they never arrived. While the food itself tasted good, we couldn’t wait to leave. I would consider ordering takeaway from here to enjoy at home, as that would likely provide a much better experience. However, I wouldn't book a table to dine in again, especially when there are so many fantastic restaurants in the area with a great atmosphere. The owners need to put in more effort if they want this place to be more than just a takeaway spot."

"Very disappointing in every respect. We had read that this hotel had an 'award winning chef ' if so, he cannot have had much to do with our meal! We ordered Beef as a reheated, factory produced object it was 'saggy ' and collapsed with very little meat filling. By contrast, the industrial slab of Lasagne was reheated to the point of being burnt around the outside. As it was our wedding anniversary we were stuck with what was available and as no waiting staff were in the room, we were not able to complain! We ate what we could and left the room, only to be pursued by a waiter, concerned that we needed to log the meal to our hotel room number. Sadly the same energy had not been applied either to the cooking or the service. It was classic 'Fawlty Towers ' we cannot recommend this place as at all representative of what a passable restaurant should be like, even at half of what we paid."
