"Truly horrendous experience and treatment at Base Restaurant from the owner chef who called the police on us and refused to let us leave. Please see details below Last night my family visited Base Restaurant for my sisters birthday. When we arrived, the 5 of us were attempted to be seated on a table for 4. This was not a suitable seating arrangement, with my 70 year old Dad squashed in the middle of my Mum and sister. When we asked if my Dad could move to sit at the end of the table instead, we were told this would not be possible due to the waitresses needing access to another table. The owner/chef came over and made no attempt to offer a solution or provide an alternative seating arrangement. My Dad said if there was not a suitable seat for him to sit in he would have to leave. The chef agreed and my Dad left the restaurant. When we came to pay for the meal, we had been charged for 5 people rather than 4. Assuming this was an error, I went to pay and informed them we had been incorrectly charge for 5 people. The owner/chef then informed me we would still have to pay full price for my Dad £54.95 even though he had to leave due to not having a suitable seat and not having eaten a thing he left approx 30-45mins before the first course being cooked . When I told him I was not going to pay for my Dad, he said that he would not let us leave until we had paid and that he would call the police as it was theft. I agreed he should call the police as it was clear to me we needed some form of mediation. I waited 10-15mins while he called the police, who informed him no theft had been occurred as no food had been served or eaten. He then continued to insist I pay him for a deposit of £20, again I refused as my Dad was unable to eat anything and he had not taken a deposit on booking. We then proceeded to argue the case for approximately 30mins with neither side backing down. This was in front of a table of 4 who were still in the restaurant, which was highly unprofessional. The owner/chef continually refused to take a payment for the 4 of us who actually ate, so I said you have left me no option than to leave. He then moved to stand in front of the exit in an attempt to block us leaving. It was at this point I got my phone out to start to record the audio as I was concerned what was going to happen next. He eventually took the payment after calling us childish and saying we were not welcome back trust me, we would no be going back anyway.. The experience left me shaken and anxious. This man has an absolute inability to take any for of accountability or critique. This will be evident in his response to this feedback, where he will attempt to explain away the issue and put it all onto my family. This was a truly terrible experience caused by a man who has the worst customer service skills I have ever experienced."

"I visited for lunch and the Covid 19 precautions in place were excellent, you had to wait to be greeted so your contact details could be taken and asked to sanitise your hands, before being shown to a table. I love the quaint tearooms, it has a lovely warm feel with lots of old furniture and memorabilia of times gone by and we were lucky to get a table, they were turning people away the whole time we were there. The menu has a huge selection of vegan options, accounting for 50% of the menu, which is wonderful and the allergen information was easy accessible on the menu itself. I chose jacket potato, houmous and roast vegetables, with smoky black bean stew off the specials board for hubby, with two pots of Earl Grey tea and oat milk. The food was delicious and good sized portions, with fresh salad and plenty tea with extra hot water for top ups. There was a massive selection of teas and coffees to purchase and I noticed lots of my favourite vegan wines on display. I had to go and have a nosey in the shop accessible from the tearooms and I was like a kid in a sweet shop, there were so many products to buy. I loved Gillam's Tearooms, with its long history and yet still owned by the Gillam family, with Doug being the great great grandson of its founder John James Gillam. Highly recommended. I visited for breakfast in October and had avocado on sourdough with a tofu bacon sandwich for my husband...As before it was delicious."

"Booked a table for 5 adults, 1 child and 2 dogs, requested if we could be seated in the bar area as we will have dogs with us. Arrived 20 minutes early thinking it wouldn't be a problem as thought we could sit and have a drink before our meal. When we arrived we were asked if we had booked then asked what we wanted to drink whilst we were all stood around a very small area, staff seemed flustered and then we were shown to our table in the dining room not the bar as requested. We were given menus which were not the same as we had viewed on line, quite limited options. Most of us went for the Sunday roast, 2 beef and 2 pork loin with crackling and apple sauce, and 1 fish and chips. We waited a good 20 minutes before anyone came to take our orders, it wasn't particularly busy that afternoon either. Whilst waiting for our food to arrive we ordered another pint and a coke, the pint arrived but no coke. In all it took an hour for food to arrive and I wish I could say it was worth the wait. The fish and chips was disappointing, the fish was sat on about 14 of the smallest chips we have ever seen! The roast beef arrived which looked nice but there was an onion chutney on the plate which wasn't mentioned on the menu and spoilt the meal for one of our party. The pork loin with crackling was a pork chop with its fat burnt, we got 3 dry small roast potatoes, a smear of mash, a long carrot that wasn't cooked and some tasteless greens. I'm going to say that some of the food seemed to come from the freezer especially the chips, very disappointing and to charge £17 each for the pork roast (pork chop) and fish and handful of frozen chips, and £18 for the roast beef was a total rip off! Safe to say we won't be back"
