"Il Principe Oxford, England. Authentic as pizza can get, Il Principe is well known amongst the locals and it should be better known to visitors. To thank the babysitter one day, there was a group decision for having pizza for dinner (what else to share? well, maybe fish and chips.. but where to go? After some negotiation and discussion, it was agreed upon for Il Principe. I had a cold at the time, so I stayed at the home base. From what I heard, the waiter there had a very strong Italian accent. Between six people, five pizza were ordered; quattro formaggi, vesuvio, napoli, parma and pesto Genovese. All five of them were good, for differing reasons some to varying degrees. By authentic, these pizzas had a thin base with few ingredients spread in a single and sparse layer on the pizza. This way, there is focus on the quality of the ingredients as well as the different flavours which contrast and interact. After this way, ideally there would not be going back to the pizza chains. For a four cheese pizza, the quattro formaggi was surpringly not overbearing. It was hard to detect the different types of cheese used but it was quite lovely to taste the different flavours. It would have been helpful if the menu told what the cheeses were to attempt detecting them better but it was a decent one, if the weakest of the lot. The vesuvio was advertised as hot underwhelming in that regard. Otherwise not bad, with a guaranteed dynamic of pepperoni, mushroom and chili oil. Parma was the surprise of the night, with the subtle flavours of parma ham and rocket mixed with the sharpness of parmaesan cheese. It was one that improved a second time around. The pesto genovese was pretty good, if a bit on the sloppy side. Tastes and ingredients here range from distinct and acquired to a bit strange for a pizza but the combination works exceptionally well. Finally, the winner of the night is the traditional and tried true napoli anchovies, olives and capers. Three salty and strong ingredients very familar to Italian cuisine. Combining these with good cheese and tomato and you have yourself a bone fide classic of Italian restaurants. This time was no exception. These pizzas were exceptional. I await going here on time, and anticipate eating their food. It is certain that I wish for a return."

"Dreadful and outrageous service. We arrived within minutes of our booking time, to be advised that our table was not ready. There were several tables available, and we were reluctantly shown to one! We ordered two beers and two medium rare rib eye steaks. The drinks arrived promptly. One steak arrived with a tiny amount of undressed salad. This dish was priced at £25.50 and as we were advised did not include even a few chips. Actually I was asked if I had read the menu clearly not well enough to realise I’d ordered a thin uninspiring steak with a minuscule quantity of salad. I was provided with some oil and balsamic. We did ask of there were some chips to accompany the dish, and were told this was extra we politely declined. The second steak arrived with the same mediocre and frankly appaling presentation. Bizarrely, two portions of chips appeared as we were finishing what passed for the main course. When we enquired again if these were included, we refused them on the basis of the the unreasonable extra charge. We decided to leave without further ado, and asked for the bill at the front desk. The gentleman who appeared to be the manager/owner was surprised when we refused to pay the additional service charge. The food and service was dreadful, and I would suggest you consider the many other restaurants in Twickenham before booking here. I will not be returning the attitude and lack of service was staggering and a grave disappointment bearing in mind I had been recommended to this establishment."

"We’ve eaten at La Bistro a good 20 or 30 times now, and as the title suggests, it’s our favourite restaurant in Leeds, not just Horsforth. For context, we are a family of four with two young kids, aged 10 and 7 at the time of writing. Given that background, the things we tend to look for in a restaurant are good food, a nice environment, solid service, consistency and a tendency to cater well for kids (and for me, that’s not simply about having a kids menu; I’ll come back to that later . La Bistro ticks every single box, every single time. First and foremost, the food here is fantastic. For all of us. Personally, I’m a lover of Mediterranean food, though as much as I do try to mix things up, I struggle to get past the meat platter; it’s delicious. The menu leads with a selection of Turkish dishes, everything from hot and cold mezes to Ottoman style seafood, and this is my personal favourite section of the menu. But there’s a lot more on offer beyond that, including a wide choice of pizzas and pastas, steaks, burgers, plus a smattering of Greek favourites like stifado and moussaka. For this reason, it’s always been a go-to whenever we’ve been looking for somewhere for a big family group. We’ve had tables of around 20 adults and children, some fussier than others, and everyone has gone away happy and full. There is something for everyone, even those with certain food intolerances. Kids can choose from a smaller portion of any pizza or pasta (they’re still generous, btw! , or a selection of other options like chicken nuggets. One final word on the food, the early bird deal (which runs from Sunday to Friday until 5pm, I think! , offers two courses for something like £19 is fantastic value. Whilst I’m partial to a calamari starter, my wife loves the desserts! There’s a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. From a personal point of view, I prefer a draft beer as opposed to bottled, however the 500ml bottles of “Efes Draft” are the next best thing. The restaurant itself is modest in size and has a modern, cozy feel. Though the restaurant isn’t massive, there’s ample space between tables, and you don’t feel like you are a top of one another. It’s a nice, relaxing place to be, even when the place is busy. As good as the food is (and it truly is brilliant , what makes this place is the staff. To a person, they are absolutely fantastic. Welcoming, friendly, helpful and attentive. Again, no matter how busy it is. Our young daughter gets on like a house on fire with the owner, who is brilliant with both of our kids. Some time ago, my daughter drew a little sketch of him while at the table; to this day, that picture remains pinned on the wall at the back of the restaurant. Just a lovely touch, that delights our little girl every time we go back. Whenever the kids’ birthdays come around, La Bistro is always the place they ask to go. Not TGIs, not Nando’s, not Five Guys. That in itself speaks volumes, for me. A visit to La Bistro is like a warm hug from family. Every single time, bar none, we’ve walked away having thoroughly enjoyed not just the food, but the whole experience. It is consistently excellent. It’s what eating out as a family should be all about."
