"Okasan, meaning Mother in Japanese, is a bijou restaurant on the fashionable Portobello Road in W10. A yearning for a plate of sashimi, tempura and some dumplings drew me in to have a final treat before the rigours of co-running my own food business set in after a brief and well deserved break. My companion, a lover of Japanese salad dressings ordered a simple salad, chicken karaage, deep fried chicken and ginger with a spicy mayonnaise and we agreed on a delicate Pinot Girgot blush, a Sospiro priced at £17.00. The salad arrived first and the dressing was so good I had to beg the waitress to tell us what the ingredients were. The chef duly obliged. It was a mix of vinegar, peanuts, sugar, apple juice, water, salt, vegetable oil, sesame seeds and soy sauce. Knowing what is in your food doesn't mean you can recreate the same taste, but I'm going to give it a damned good try. It was simply sensational. Next came the steamed and pan fried dumplings; little golden nuggets of yumminess. My sashimi was spankingly fresh and served with the usual wasabi and the thin slivers of ginger had the perfect tartness to marry with the oily fish. If I had a little gripe it was that there was no daikon, the shredded Japanese radish (or mooli) that has a lovely crunch to it and nearly always accompanies it. The deep fried chicken that had been marinated in soy and ginger was delicious and the spicy mayo packed a punch. I don't recall ever seeing mayo on a Japanese menu before, (this was mayo mixed with chili sauce) but it worked. The wine, ice cold and very pleasant quaffing vino to boot slipped down all too easily. Being a greedy git I then ordered some prawn tempura, the batter of which was light as a feather and a crispy, heavenly coating for the juicy king prawns inside. A double espresso later and the bill came to £60. Japanese food is never cheap (especially when you think of the price of sashimi grade fish which only lasts a day at most) but the flavours, the delicacy, the quality of a good Japanese experience is well worth the price in my book and that's exactly what we had. I'm already looking forward to the next visit."

"**** food, dreadful service and uninspiring surroundings. There were chunks of plaster coming off the wall, and cobwebs and grime on the bathroom mirror. We ordered a starter to share and two mains. One main came out on its own and we assumed that it couldn't be ours as we'd only ordered 10 minutes ago. Then we had a bit of a to-do with the waitress, who said that it was ours, and if we had wanted our starter to come first, we should have said. She then brought the starter out first at our insistence, but clearly the mains had already been cooked and were just kept humming away under a hot plate – when they arrived immediately afterwards they were tepid and had a thick skin on the top. The empty plates from our starter were left on our table. The chicken katsu curry was really grim – a glorified chicken nugget with a gloopy and flavourless chip-shop sauce, and my friend didn't finish her tempura curry either. All this time the service was sullen and dismissive, and as the people next to us were also complaining about a missing order, so the atmosphere was pretty lacklustre for a Thursday night. I had previously been to the Feng Sushi in West Hampstead, which had a considerate and interesting proprietor and was a lovely place to eat – this is nothing like it. With so many options around Waterloo, you'd be better off going to a mass market chain like Wagamama for the price. At the very least, the food would be hot, and you wouldn't have your bill flung at you."

"I was appalled about the quality of the service from the moment I arrived at the moment when I left what was when I arrived, I was not asked if I wanted a drink, and I was not asked about the whole meal. the waitress should have seen on the table that we only had water and asked if we wanted a drink. then we ordered our first round hot food. I pressed the help button and after waiting for a good minute for the waitress finally arrived. I felt it was too long. at this point in the evening there were three complete tables throughout the restaurant, so I thought the time we had to wait was bad. then the food began to come, but it didn't come quite. a few dishes came and then a few more and a few more afterwards. that meant that we didn't all eat together, we all ate at different times. I had ordered two dishes to eat at the same time and they did not arrive at the same time. very disappointing. the third order of hot food was beyond a sweat. it was clear that one of the two waitresses didn't feel very comfortable (I heard one of the chiefs to bring them home). she was our waitress. So we ordered the third round hot food. minutes later, we hadn't had our food yet. in this time the cook spoke with the sick waitress. then I pressed the help button and I explained that we had ordered something to eat and waited a long time. then I look at the waitress and the cook and it was absolutely clear that the order did not go through so that it was only then that the food started to cook. the waitress who took the order explained that there were many problems and it was sorry for her. as a customer who paid for a meal, I did not care about the problems, I still expected a good service and my food to turn. overall I thought the service was absolutely terrible. I will not visit this restaurant again and I will not recommend the restaurant to everyone."
