"Had a meal at this restaurant yesterday after a show at the theatre. Not been to this PE for about a year but the restaurant at St Mary’s Butts closed a few years back (which was always the better of the two and our personal favourite it now leaves only one option. It seems to have fallen a little further downhill. Waiter was fine but generally the staff seemed to lack enthusiasm generally (maybe the post christmas feeling but I don’t expect to experience it when dining out I could smell something unpleasant and pungent when we were seated in a booth and it took me a short while to figure out it was actually the table that smelled awful. Like it had been wiped down with a dirty cloth or unpleasant table spray. I wiped the whole table over with a anti bac wipe and I couldn’t smell the smell again. So, but if a weird start. The kids food was fine. They both had a piccolo menu starter and pizza. We ordered olives with the starters too which we had to chase up after all our starters had been eaten. My Arancini starter was undercooked … and luke warm. My partners squid was chewy. We all had pizza for main and while it was cooked fine, tasted ok they did arrive together, they seemed a lot smaller than they used to be for a romana pizza from the main menu and for the price, no flair, no pizza board, just served on a plate (which is find if it’s a £10 Pizza Hut this was £15! . We were asked if we wanted anything else when the pizza’s were delivered and said no thanks: then we decided we did want some extra cheese and some black pepper so I asked one of the staff, a lady this time, possibly a manager, she brought them and left them on the table.. other restaurants nearby of similar cuisine will go to the effort of actually serving it to you. But not here. So we ate our meal. Then ordered pudding. All of which came at different times so no one ate their pudding together. The sticky toffee pudding was again, luke warm. The new menu offering for kids of snowball dough balls came served on top of a napkin on the plate so when my son cut the dough ball in half, the napkin stuck to the underside of the dough ball. It seemed a bit weird to serve hot sticky food on a napkin. All in all there are now much nicer places in the vicinity to eat, which have a bit more about them and are worth the price of the food being served… lacklustre is all I can describe this place as now so we won’t be coming back here."

"Having visited this branch a fair few times I’ve always been pleasantly surprised by the attentive staff, always busy doing something, good service, attentive, but sadly that all went out the window on my recent visit. Walking down the stairs I was met (not physically, I was stood waiting for a short time with two members of the ‘team’ slouching against the counter chatting. Hmmm. Ok. A third team member greeted me, and she was very pleasant and friendly. The other two, 1 male, 1 female, still slouched against the counter. And not just slouched, but slouched with arms crossed (when not on their phones! . Not a great view having people’s butts sticking out when you look up. Not a great advert. What really bugged me was the manager (I’m assuming he was the manager as not in uniform was in the vicinity and was even chatting with them. Sorry but having been in hospitality for numerous years with my own premises if staff had done that they would be given jobs to do. There is always something that can be done which doesn’t include slouching and chatting. Maybe it’s the norm here? Let’s get to the ordering, the young slouching female team member came to take my order ‘what can I get ya’. Ok so no ‘are you ready to order?’ or ‘can I take your order?’ Order given, back to slouching. I guess walking 20 feet and saying those few words took all your energy? They were that busy slouching the ‘manager’ brought my starter! Either that or I’m a privileged customer…… So onto the food…..well I can honestly say this was the worst I’ve had at any pizza express, and usually at this branch it has been pretty good. The pizza was undercooked, pretty much raw from about inch and half in (and as a romana base it should be pretty well cooked, crispy, across the whole base , about a dozen bits of meat, 5 onion rings, few little bits of green pepper, sauce was, well, non existent as was the cheese, maybe they were running out? On previous visits I have not been able to fault the pizzas, always well cooked and crispy with decent amount of toppings and enough cheese that it ‘strings’ when you pull a slice off. Did I complain or make anyone aware, no because no one came to see how my meal was as they were too busy slouching and not looking at any customers, nor did they ask when my plate was cleared with a fair amount left on it. Poor show, but in fairness it was the slouching female that cleared and I don’t think interacting with customers was her forte! And for those who will say they use phones for their orders, this server had one table, mine, so I can’t see what she was doing on the ordering phone with no other guests ordering with her! Lastly, the temperature in the restaurant was decidedly cold, I can’t see that any heating was on at all, luckily I had a thick jumper on but i was still cold throughout my visit. Dubious as to if I will return as this visit has put me off to be honest."

"Not sure why I have continued to return to pizza express at for Kinnaird, I suppose the main reason would be that my 21 month old generally really enjoys the food and I have to say the kids menu is better than I have seen in most restaurants however I always come away feeling dissatisfied about other things. A couple of months ago I meant to write a review regarding the staff. I took my daughter in for lunch, it was around 12ish on a week day so quiet. At one point I noticed every member of staff on their phone and not particularly out of sight of customers. I also watched the chef who is in full view of restaurant, take out his phone in the middle of making a pizza (with his bare hands), text on his phone then put it back into his pocket. This is obviously very unhygienic given we all know how dirty our phones get. Anyway another month went by and convenience and a hungry toddler brought me back in. This time I found a piece of plastic in my pasta looked like the piece of plastic you break off a pasta sauce tub. I was quite annoyed by this given we were the only people in the restaurant so I’m putting this down to sheer negligence by the chef. I have to say that I agree with previous comments about the standard of cleanliness but I can tell why as staff really don’t seem interested and can come across quite abrupt. Also the Bolognese has virtually no mince in it and far too much fennel!!"
