"In the approach to Christmas, at the time of goodwill to all men, I feel hesitant writing this review. We 've had meals at The Bell before, probably on three occasions, and they have been fine with good service. This time we met friends here and had driven a long way through driving rain and were hungry! The restaurant was full, and so was the waiting area. I think the other half of the room was being used for a meeting or conference maybe, so perhaps the restaurant floor area where we normally sit was reduced. We were greeted reasonably and shown to our table and sat down, We were presented with the Festive menu. We preferred to order from the main menu. After about 15 minutes, we had to ask for these from behind the bar. Our drinks came pretty quickly our waitress was courteous and friendly, and our food order was taken. After over an hour, and noting that other tables who arrived well after we did were served before us, we enquired as to whether we had been forgotten. We had to go and find someone to ask. After 20 minutes more, our food did arrive. The bream, liver and fish and chips were OK. But I don 't think the chef knows how to cook the basics, unless a work experience person or the like was given responsibility. Mashed potato was cold and getting solid. Saute potatoes were few and far between, overcooked, small and cold. The salad was a dozen olives thrown onto a couple of lettuce leaves. The waitress offered to have the mash replaced, but we didn 't have another hour to spare. The waitress was full of apologies, but said she had asked about the delay from the kitchen. The food isn 't cheap here, so quality ought to have been reasonabe, not partly sub standard or unenjoyable. We apologised to our friends for recommending this venue. Although the bill was adjusted, we 'll probably try somewhere else next time. Shame, because we love the area and the decor."

"slightly unusual offer: wedgwood make picnic ham on request. they are ready to order, and I had luck getting a gift. paul, the chef, apparently took the idea of a vegan hampers as a personal project. I can highly recommend the result. we received an eleven-course menu for two in two small ham, among them wee glasses, milk flask of coffee cups, tellers, cutlery, serviettes and hand cleaners. ice packs meant that eating was still cooled when we started eating 7 hours after the collection. the wine was chosen to fit the budget of the gifter; we were told it was a little unusual — translation: absurdly drunk straight out, the crust oil was a big hit, with crust bread soaked; we have wolfed through a whole rice bean salad and beautifully presented baked mushroom cous (with decorative mushroom-y flakes) (we have a very tasty pasta to find, roasted veg. six courses left — portion control! next was one of the two real stars of the show: a sprudel, nussbaum and granatapfelsalat with tangigem dressing. as good as it looks (see photo) at this place we were a little lavish, so we only slightly picked up the oriental nudels, the roasted asparagus with cale and sniffing grains and the sesame runner beans and left the leaves later. on dessert: the simple description of granola, chocolate, berries just doesn't make it fair. this was effective a chocolate fondue with fresh celestial, strawberry and mini-granola slices to dive, accompanied by coffee. 9 hours after picking up the coffee was still hot when it no longer pierced. so overall: the No-doubt market price was more than matched by the experience: eating was delicious, and often also a firm one for the eyes; the portions generous; the weinstellar - and we had not finished our eleven-course picnic after three hours. we had a few days later rest and I greet as I think of some of the dishes. beyond a couple of dry mandarins I think that my only complaining would be rather a suggestion for less weight in the early erect: to find themselves so full after the rice, the couscous and pasta made us a little strenuous, but perhaps we would have decided to eat more responsibly. the gifted reported to find lisa wedgwood, especially appealing and helpful while arranging the hamper."

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages. Would be interested to receive a reply to this review]"

"POh my god real suvlaki and Cretan salad!!!! Ok I will tone down the excitement to write this review. There are lots of restaurants claiming to be 'real ' Greek and I must say they are not! This one however definitely is. The obligatory blue and white and Ionian column theme might be there to honour the cliches but the graffiti on the wall saying 'sex, suvlaki and rock 'n 'roll ' is definitely bringing some tongue in cheek Greek spirit back. But let 's just get to the food. You can choose between a selection of skewers or wraps, get one big one or 3 mini ones. Go for pork, chicken and sausage as lamb is not a suvlaki meat. Lamb is doner meat because some people don 't eat pork. Anyway, you can also get a cooked main, I recommend the feta stuffed burgers. No real Greek meal is complete without sides on the table so definitely get the chips, baked feta, Cretan salad and tzatziki. Depending on how much you want to eat you can have the mini wraps as sides as well and get a proper main course. For drinks try the Fix beer or the fruity red wine. After your meal you have to order a Greek coffee with sugar. The aroma and flavour of it is beyond belief! No espresso can hold a candle next to it hands down. As you may have guessed, I plan to go there a lot now that I have found it. Finally a proper Greek street food place like the ones I used to have growing up. You have one very happy Greek person here!!!"
