"Bad manners no booking. We had been meaning to visit L'Auberge, often lauded as a hidden gem' of Putney for a very long time, but didn't even make it as far as the reservation stage. I called in at about on Valentine's Day, admittedly a busy time for a restaurant, to make a booking for later on that week. After being attended to by one member of staff, I was called aside by another (possibly the proprietress) and was told very rudely (complete with wagging finger) that I could not make a reservation in person but must phone.
