"I was bought an Activity Superstore voucher for my birthday which gave me an Afternoon tea for two people. We spent the day in Chester prior to going to the hotel and wished we hadn 't bothered. Upon arrival the hotel didn 't look appealing and when we were greeted at reception we were made to feel that the booking had been forgotten about. We were asked to take a seat whilst the reception team member found someone to seat us. We were seated in what can only be called a green house with no ventilation air. We were offered tea or coffee and were told to take a seat. The curtains and table clothes were dirty, the furniture tatty and we felt like we needed a shower when we left. After around 10 minutes, the drinks arrived and we took it upon ourselves to move to a table in the shade. The air conditioning wasn 't working and it was 30 degrees outside. To be fair, the air conditioning looked like it hadn 't been serviced or used in quite some time (my husband works in the HVAC industry) Our food arrived and my heart sank. We weren 't asked or told what the sandwiches included or what the cakes were. The sandwiches were dry, tasteless and half of the crusts remained. We only ate a couple and left the rest. The cakes were okay although what we think might have been a profiterole looking more like a sausage!! The scones were crunchy and we were offered no butter as an option. At no point did anyone ask if we would like another drink (hot or cold) or whether the food was okay. We were in the hotel around 30 minutes before we left very disappointed. Certainly not a place I would recommend or return to."

"The Whipper Inn is a classic example that demonstrates that you can’t judge a book by its cover. From the outside, it’s a beautiful sandstone building in a very lovely Rutland town, lots of passing Hunter wellied locals and Oakham visitors and enough ‘good life’...appeal to make a lunchtime visit more than just a well heeled fuel stop. So why haven’t the management recognised exactly what a gem they have and tapped into their unique selling point a quintessential, honey stoned English coaching inn, rich in Rutland country culture ? This hostelry is very confused about who and what it is to the point of having multiple personality disorder. Reception dark oak, white emulsion and I feel the need to write artificial flowers, bar/ restaurant birch wonky tables and Iaminate floors? All very odd. This level of confusion applied to the staff and level of service too. Walking into reception, as the door to the bar from the market place was locked, we were greeted with surprise by the receptionist when we said we’d booked a table for lunch. We were the only diners at that time. The receptionist then became our waiter ... eventually. Again, stressed and confused. The menu was very limited and basic ... we hoped this was a sign of something special (kept simple so the chef could focus on a thoughtful menu, quality local ingredients and exquisite presentation a fine dining experience perhaps ? the lunchtime menu prices would lead you to this conclusion) but how wrong we were. ‘ gin battered fish and chips’ ?? ‘Lemon tart’ both tasted like ‘mums been to Iceland’ .... complete with ice crystals and a soggy bottom on the tart !!! Service was appalling various requests were ignored, forgotten or just not heard. We ate quickly, paid begrudgingly and left without anyone even acknowledging that we were even there. A sad disappointment in every way. Such a shame ."
