"Stopped off here today looking for a pub lunch for 2 adults, a 2 year old and a 6 year old. Was confident that we would get a good meal and service as the vast majority of reviews on here and google are really positive. Think we must have visited on an off day. Entered the pub, and the gentleman behind the bar was clearly trying to eat his lunch and did not acknowledge us. I then asked if we could have a table for lunch, and was told to sit anywhere and order at the bar. We seated ourselves, and I then spent 5 minutes looking at the menu boards which seemed to be geared more to an evening service. The gentleman behind the bar was watching as I did this but said nothing. I then found a pile of menus on the bar why he couldn’t have said “take a seat, the menus are here” I do not know. We then ordered two kids meals and 2 adult bbq chicken baps, along with drinks. The food and drinks were fairly priced. I then asked a member of staff if they had a high chair, and was told she didn’t think they did. A couple of minutes later she returned saying “there is a high chair at the back there” so I went and collected one, making sure I didn’t hit the bar or any other customers. As a parent, it would have been nice if she could have just brought it up to our table for us. No issues with the kids food at all, good size portions and they ate almost all of it. Our food was a bit lacklustre I was expecting a fresh (possibly toasted) roll with chicken, melted cheese, bbq sauce, lettuce and mayo. The roll was at best supermarket quality, and the cheese was a square slice from a packet just placed on there. The chips were good though, but due to the lack of customer service and the quality of the “adult food” we won’t be visiting again."

Terrible food! We all had fish n chips! Frozen boxed cremated batter, which we all left! Grey watery unpleasant tiny fish. Chips too dry to eat. Nice lady who served us. However, later the male barman was rude to one of his customers and unpleasant to my friend! Won’t re-visit!

The food here is awful. I ordered the 'special ' pizza which was anything but and 3/4 was left. My wifes steak and ale pie was OK but accompanying vegetables were cold and was served with a gravy which could best be described as 'gloopy '. I would not recommend this pub to my friends.

Stayed for 4 nights visiting the Dales. Although the postal address is Leyburn its a long way from Leyburn itself. The pub itself was friendly, reasonably priced on drinks and food. The food, all home cooked could not be faulted on quality or price. My own personal view was that breakfast starting at 9am was the only drawback. We are early risers and would have preferred to be on the road by 8am.

After a busy day in the Dales we found ourselves looking for a pub for dinner. We were late and quite a few local pubs had stopped serving food, the Fox and Hounds included. When we asked about food, we were told that although they had stopped serving food, they could make pizzas from their menu. We opted for this and each had a drink and a pizza. The pizzas were delicious and we now know of another pub we can visit when in the Dales.

Called in as part of a walk around the Dales... the welcome and the service were great.... bar staff were chatty whilst working...sorted our group out with a bit of racing on the TV.... the pub is in a lovely location and I can imagine sitting outside on a lovely sunny day would be magical... the F&H is one of those pubs that when you walk in you just can feel the village cozyness that only some pubs have....we didn't sample the food but I did spot what people were having and it looked good... defo call in if you are in the area....

Let me start by saying the pub itself is a nice pub and west burton is a lovely village with the falls on it 's doorstep. When we booked the table, we had to pre-order our food as they had staff shortages and there weas seven of us. Fair enough. We were surprised about how extensive the menu was. There seemed a lot of choices for a kitchen that is short staffed. So, we arrived got our seat, in a seperate section of the pub obviously geared for people who are staying in one of the rooms. The decor was not a pub decor and you did not feel part of the pub or even that you are in a pub. Everyone had starter, mains and some had pudding. I would say it 's what I would call Homely Honest Food . Abs...

Arrived in hiking gear and asked to check in (reservation made months ago) so the barman (close relative of a Neanderthal) said I’d have to wait for ‘the lady’ so I said I’d have a pint while I wait to which he responded ‘Well, d’you want to check in or have a pint’! I last came to this pub in 2005 and the welcome hasn’t improved. It’s in a beautiful location and the building is quaint but OMG the barman seems to have mistaken ‘hospitality’ for hostility! Facilities from the 1960s, bedroom decor mid-1970s, comfy bed, clean room but freezing even with electric fire on. Dribble ‘power’ shower. Super selection of tea…..PH Tips or PG Tips. Service vaguely improved in the evening when ‘Grunt’ was...

"We arrived frazzled because we drove around the grounds in the dark not knowing where to go. The signage inside the grounds is no help at all. Allow time for this if you haven't been before. Fortunately we had because we wanted a pre dinner drink in the bar before we ate. Even when we did arrive we weren't sure if we had arrived at the back entrance because we stood for ages with no welcome or acknowledgement. A very disappointing start to our evening. When someone did come they didn't take our coats. We went through to the snug for a drink. They gave us menus and went away. Later came back for our order. We got our drinks and ordered our food. Then very quickly afterwards we were asked to go through to the restaurant. We had only had a couple of sips of our drinks and it was still prior to the time we had actually booked our table for (7.30pm). We felt rushed. The food came and was fabulous. I had the beetroot starter which had beautifully cooked beetroots and some pickles. It also had a grain through it. I couldn't remember what the grain was so asked a member of staff. She didn't know so went away to ask and came back saying it was probably buckwheat....probably! My main was pork belly with parsnip and an apple reduction. The pork could have been cooked a little longer. I think belly needs to be very well cooked until really soft. The top skin was impossible to cut through as it was not crisp, I couldn't eat it. A steak knife would have helped. Having said that it was still a good dish which could have been excellent. We had sides of mashed potato and greens with pickles both superb. The presentation of both dishes was innovative and inviting. Portion size was good too not tiny portions of fiddled with food which I much prefer. The service was not as polished as the food. There was no obvious manager and we had different servers which is never quite as good as one for the entire meal. The servers were scruffy not appropriate for such a lovely building. Overall it was OK but could have been superb with more attention to some details. Service: 2 Location: 3"
