"Everything is jolly but the food! After lovely a day out, four of us decided to have a pub supper and saw the Jolly Fisherman as we were passing through Stanstead Abbots. It looked idyllic being a hot sunny day and with the river location, it was just too wonderful to miss. The atmosphere was pleasant and everywhere looked clean, we also noticed quite a few group reservations, it was a good sign. Being early Saturday evening, the place was lively with mainly family groups and friends enjoying the garden area. We started off very well. The service was not bad considering it was busy. We loved the wine, the house red was particularly enjoyable, room temperature and silky smooth. The chardonnay was equally good, fruity and chilled. Unfortunatley, it all went downhill from there. Two of us ordered the Baked Enchiladas, the others had a chef's special Thai Prawn Curry. Our friend had a Beef Nachos sharers dish as a main. Frankly, it would have been good to see a main meal salad option, being a hot sunny day. The Enchiladas looked like they were cooked in a microwave two small non descript rolls were dished on a small round plate. I didn't see any bubbling cheese on top, there was pockets of water and the bread itself was quite a soggy dough consistency. Definitely not baked. However, it tasted OK. A small garnish sized salad was placed on a hot plate and wilted and no dressing was provided. The Thai King Prawn curry had about 4 small prawns and no more than 4 tiny crackers. The Beef Nachos was mainly corn chips and little substance with the jalapenos being on the mushy side. The average cost of the main meals was just under £9 each. I have had better sized starters from other chain pub restaurants ie Harvester, Wetherspoons, Old English Inns. As we were all very hungry we ate up and left stating we were disappointed. If it was not for my elderly mother being in the group, we would have just got up and left. I think we were all better off buying the same food in a supermarket and just heating it up ourselves at a fraction of the cost mirroring the basic and plain presentation with no attention to detail. We went home still hungry. I would return again to the pub as it is in a good location, but definitely not for food. PS However, since writing I did make a complaint to McMullen pubs and to give them credit I had a very prompt reply. They have since provided a voucher with assurances that they willl look into the issues and resolve any bad practices. I look forward to returning again in the near future and will update my review"

Popped in for light lunch after a walk. Excellent IPA. Scampi was tasty. We managed to get the last spot in the car park.

Lovely riverside pub with reasonable menu and good service. Lots of outdoor seating with views along the river and under the bridge. Smallish car park, but additional parking nearby. View menu

The restaurant needs to adjust its approach towards younger adult customers. It used to be a lovely and laid-back pub with great food, but recent policy changes have affected its reputation. Customers under the age of 21 will not be served alcohol at this establishment.

Located on the River Lea in Stanstead Abbotts, The Jolly Fisherman is a charming pub owned by McMullen. They offer a great selection of real ales from the local Hertford Brewery, along with wines, lagers, and ciders. The atmosphere is cozy with exposed beams and a mix of traditional and contemporary food options on the menu. While the pub has a restaurant area, there is also ample outdoor seating next to the river, perfect for enjoying a sunny day. The pub is family-friendly and hosts special events throughout the year. The only downside is the prices, but the quality of the food, friendly staff, and picturesque location make it worth it. A great spot for a relaxing day out in the English co... View menu

Have lived in stanstead Abbott’s since I was 12 years old (now 37) myself and family have always been going to the jolly fisherman and have never had any problems what so ever, always had a lovely time however I think the new manager (a lady with dark brown bobbed hair cut) was shockingly rude and to us when we walked in it’s not a way to greet customers she was abrupt and just very miserable with an attitude. I will be making a complaint as it felt very sad that a pub Iv known all my life to be a lovely place has now got someone there running it the way she does. It’s not the first time she was rude either. I feel maybe she should get a different role as she clearly cannot take the pressure...

Visited on Bank Holiday Monday with a group of friends, six of us on total, when we arrived the pub was extremely busy and we were worried as we hadn’t booked, we were warmly greeted by a manager who said they would be able to accommodate us in about 20 minutes,if we would like to get some drinks first they would come and find us when a table was ready, we ordered drinks at the bar and although the girls working the bar were busy, service wasn’t compromised and we exchanged friendly banter. At the table our order was taken swiftly and efficiently, food arrived in a good time and we were really impressed with presentation and quality of food for the price. Overall we were all really impressed w...

"I recently moved from Stanstead Abbotts, a beautiful little village in the valley of the river Lea. At the end of the high street is this quaint little Thai restaurant that I used to walk by and always said to myself Before I leave this village, I will book a table and have a meal So said so done. On the afternoon of my move, I asked if they had a table available (on the spot) which they did not hesitate to give me. The restaurant has 2 sections, the front is the largest. I was given a table at the back, as I 'm assuming the other tables were reserved. The menu is vast, bright and colourful, with a touch of personal personality and the price points were within my budget, plus I was giving myself a treat. I ordered 4 dishes: 1. Pad Thai chicken Ginger dish, which I thought came with noodles, but didn 't 2. Crispy sweet and sour beef 3. Thai Green curry 4. Coconut rice This was accompanied by a medium size glass of Lemonade with a slice of Lemon for garnish. The Presentation was nicely served on white plates which made the colours of the food stand out. I had two waitresses, MiMi looked after me the most and frequently asked if all was well as I ate. I was quite hungry, so she said no rush. The decore in the back of the restaurant was embellished with potted plants, hanging from the ceiling with, faux red leather benched seating and whitewashed brick walls. Where I sat (at the back) felt slightly cut off from the main hub of the restaurant, which did affect my overall experience, albeit I was grateful to be given a table, at such short notice, so I reframed that circumstance. I could hear chatter in the busy kitchen, as takeaway orders, were going out, as well as seated reservations. BACK TO THE FOOD: All dishes were served hot and well presented. My Thai curry was in a bowl, that almost tipped over, not sure if that was my haste or the design of the bowl. This tasted exquisite. The flavours bounced around my pallet and the chicken was so succulent and morrish with a touch of heat! As I stated earlier, from the illustration on the menu I ordered Pad Thai, which I assumed was a noodle dish, yet when it arrived it was just chicken and ginger in a sauce. There must have been a miscommunication when I was making my order...Never mind, I had enough in front of me and wondered if my eyes were too big for my belly ! The crispy beef was OK, a little chewy! and the coconut rice was a delight. All in all, I was full and the meal satisfied my hunger. In reflection, if I was to order all over again, I would have ordered x2 THAI GREEN CURRY and I would have been happy, The bill was brought to my table promptly, after I asked for it in a nice golden ornate-looking bowl, accompanied by two pearl mints (nice touch) Now for the hard part.. The Bill I was pleasantly surprised to pay £38.35, that afternoon, excluding a service charge (not sure if that was because I was eating alone or what) If I were to give my whole experience of dining at Khunnai Thai Cuisine a mark out of Ten, I would grade it 7/10. Room for improvement: The decore in the back part of the restaurant, maybe some soft Thai music, Change the colour of the deep red Faux leather seating to something more tropical looking, Maybe an extension for outside dining, at the back (during summer) and a little less NaCl. Comments are given all in goodwill. Thank you for a tasty meal. I would definitely eat at Kuhnnai Thai Cuisine and bring my friends or family along...Next time I will book a table for the front of the restaurant, which appeared to be a more open-plan layout with a buzzing atmosphere."
