"I know I've reviewed this hidden gem before but now after three visits its worth adding a bit more.A hidden gem, because L'Estanquet is a little out of the city centre just across the Pont Neuf.Worthy of further comment because there's great consistency across the service, the ambience and most importantly the food. This is a bustling French bistro at it's best. Menu options range from 2 or 3 course table d'hote at Euro14.99 and Euro15.99 through wider choices for Euro 23 and full al la carte. Meats are cooked on the open wood fire and there's hardly a tourist in site ....ie the locals are all over this place! This week we had a pea volute with a ravioli of cabecou ( kind of camenbert cheese) and followed up with 7 hr slow cooked shoulder of lamb with broad beans and finished with panna cotta and coffee, all excellent.Good wine list though the house red at lunchtime is perfectly drinkable. That L'Estanquet is usually booked out for lunch speaks volumes in it's praise so be sure to make a reservation or be prepared to be disappointed."

Off the main tourist routes, this is a very French restaurant. Staff were kind, courteous and very patient with my dodgey French. Good menu, but not for the faint hearted - the steak tartare was very good! We had menu de jour (€23 for 3 courses) with drinks extra.

To be honest I was not taken by this town. It's ok, maybe I just don't like red brick. This restaurant however is what I imagined good family French food to be. It is accessible and very tasty and the staff were kind to us given that our French is appalling. It is also reasonably priced and the chocolate pudding wowed the wife. Try the veal and mushrooms. Tres Bon.

My husband and I visited for dinner based on Trip Advisor reviews and were definitely not disappointed. We both had the set menu and were very impressed with each dish. My entree of pea veloute with ravioli was delicious, as was his pate. My main was a whole fish which was cooked perfectly, with potato and ratatouille - a fantastic dish. His dessert of caramel panna cotta was one of the best he has ever had my cherry pistachio cake with sorbet was delicious, although would have been better with an ice cream/cream. Overall an amazing experience.

Ok, so this is my 3rd review of L'Estanquet but good venues need praise and consistency is all important. L'Estanquet deserves both. This was the first time we'd been for dinner so the menu was more expensive than the great value lunches, however the food remains of a very high standard, the staff are charming and helpful, the decor delights the eye at every turn and the meat cooked on the coals in an open fire is as good as it gets. Menu choices are wide and varied and the wine list has something for all tastes and budgets - among my favourite eating places. Don't miss it!

We were in Montauban for two nights and ate at this restaurant both nights! The food quality and choices were amazing. I have had duck in many place in France over the years, and this was the best quality, best cooked, best accompanied duck I've very had. The entrees were unique and delicious. The servers were helpful and friendly. The second night we came back we were treated like old friends! While not everyone's idea of a great dish, the bone marrow on toast was wonderful. This is definitely a destination of locals, everything is in French but we stumbled with our French and the servers stumbled with their English and it all worked well.

No doubt someone here has their finger on the pulse. It's no surprise the place was full to the brim when we visited. Wecan only echo what others have said before us. The food was excellent and the value for money unquestionable, a sensibly priced wine list that favoured red drinkers in the main. The ambience was all you'd expect in a French bistro, busy, bustling and full of life with great attentive service, we ate at lunchtime and will return - there are just too many good things on the menu for one visit. Remember to book, if you don't you'll go hungry .....and that would be a pity.We went for a long lunch but would equally go for dinner.... this is a true charmer!

We visited last last Autumn, had an exceptionally good meal and promised ourselves a retun visit. That the place is full and of locals is a strong indication as to the quality and value that lies within. L'Estanquet was just as bustling as the last time visited and the food as delicious. We chose the menu maison consisting of three courses with good choices. Our table started with a veloute (soup) of mushrooms and chestnuts or the goose rillettes both of which were excellent. We all opted for the slow cooked rabbit in cider with prunes, broccoli mousse and potatoes boulanger - it was outstanding, for dessert we took the light gateau with lemon sorbet - wonderful and all for 23 euros.
