"After an evening flight into Gatwick and the drive to Pembury, it was just after 8.30pm, when we finally got to go to Mallows for our evening meal. There was quite a lengthy wait at the waiter station/front desk as the staff tried to rectify...some problem with a group of men who had just dined. Never mind, these things happen, however the 2 staff members were both quite engrossed in the problem and seemed unaware that we were waiting for a table. Finally we were seated and left with menus to choose our meals. After calling a passing staff member to order a drink (we had not had any lunch or anything to drink since 11.30am that morning) and no-one seemed to come near us, we eventually got to quench our thirst. The next problem came when we placed our order for dinner. My husband had seen the Sea Bass on the menu and as that is his new favourite fish, he was happy. I noticed the Chicken Tikka Curry and that appealed to me as husband is not a curry lover and when we are out I can indulge my passion for spicy foods. Our waiter took our orders and disappeared through the swinging door. Before long, he re-appeared with the message that unfortunately, there was no Sea Bass left, would you like to choose something else Husband perused the menu again and came upon his 2nd favourite food, Lamb Rump. He was still happy and we eagerly awaited our dinner. The kitchen door again swung open, and our waiter then informed us that there was no longer any lamb rump available and by the way, the Chicken Tikka was also unavailable. After perusing the menu again and subtly suggesting that he tell us what WAS available, we made our choices which were far from what we felt like. All in all, the presentation of the food was OK what can you do with Battered Fish Chips and 1/2 Roasted Chicken anyway and not the food we would normally choose at a Restaurant."

Food was nice but a little pricey for what it was. Good choice of drinks to choose from and staff very keen to please.

This hotel restaurant offers average quality food and subpar service. It is not recommended to book a table or dine here. Instead, opt to order from the bar menu or visit restaurants in Tunbridge Wells. There is not much else to say about this establishment, as it is best to steer clear.

we had a nice meal here during the stay. the menu had a reasonable choice and the portion size was good. one of us had burger, the other gamble and a steak. all well cooked. the personal was very attentive. the restaurant had no atmosphere as there were no music and few people were in there.

Okay so the price wasn't drastically expensive, but for £15 you don't expect to have a dry burger.. chips were amazing though! the waiters are great, cannot fault them at all. Best part of the whole night was the white chocolate ice cream, one of...the best deserts i've actually ever had. so i guess the ice cream made up for the dry burger!

The restaurant has a nice setting next to the bar area and offers reasonably priced meals. Although we couldn't bring our dog into the restaurant, we were allowed to dine in the bar area with the same menu, and our dog could stay with us there, which was a great compromise. The breakfast in the restaurant was fantastic with a variety of hot and cold dishes. The staff were friendly and helpful, enhancing our overall experience at the hotel.

The quality and presentation of the meal was excellent but let down by the young inexperienced staff. We were shown to the table and then had to wait a least 5 minutes before being asked if we wanted to order any drinks (we had to...call the waitress over). Another 10 minute wait and still no drinks ar order for food taken, we again had to call the young waitress over. The restaurant was not busy as there was only 8 people dining but the three waiters and waitress were standing talking most of the time. Not the sort of service you would expect in a 4 star hotel. We did not eat in the resaurant on our second nights stay because of the bad service.

The restaurant seemed promising at first, but it was quite cold inside. I ordered a dish called "crispy chili cow," but when it arrived it was not actually crispy. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she insisted that it was how the dish was always prepared. I asked for a different starter, and after some back and forth, I was served a disappointing black pudding scotch egg. The main course, a filet steak with peppercorn sauce, was also a letdown. The sauce was overpowering and the side dishes were bland. To make matters worse, we were charged a 10% service fee that was not warranted, as the service was subpar. Overall, I was not impressed with the food or the service and would not recomm...

Myself and my husband re visited the restaurant to celebrate our first wedding anniversary having held our reception at the hotel- this was part of the wedding package. We were quickly seated in the restaurant and were pleased with the menu choices. My husband chose...crispy duck followed by lamb rump which we had for our wedding. The duck was tasty though not crispy and the lamb cooked to his choice of rare. I enjoyed the chicken breast with potatoes and seasoned veg which was delicious. We left room for dessert of sticky toffee pudding which was wonderfully light! The waiters were attentive and efficient in their service and we enjoyed our evening very much. The menu was a little more expe...

"Firstly I would like to say that this restaurant has just been refurbished, and it didn’t feel like an Italian restaurant, more like a cafe at the beach somewhere! It felt very sparse and most Italian restaurants I e been to have proper tablecloths on the table but these were plastic and I noticed one table it was tapped up underneath, in my opinion it needs to be made more warmly and have more of a family feel. The food was really nice, although I would advise anyone to make sure they double check their order as I chose chicken in a sauce really nice which came with vegetables but I also asked for a separate portion of potatoes, when it arrived I just had chicken with a few cut up potatoes and a very very small garnish of salad ! I mentioned this to the waitress who had taken our order and she said I know but the chef had given you extra salad !! Sorry but salad is not vegetables , it clearly said on the menu it came with vegetables. Having said about the above issue, the meals we all had were nice and the staff gave us a very warm welcome and because of the blip they said we could have a free pudding…..not sure if we all did or it was just mine but I never see the bill as we were treated to this. To finish the evening off we were given a lovely limoncello shot. We would definitely go back. Thankyou for a lovely evening in your restaurant"

"Popped in for a late lunch with my wife and sat in the garden in the sunshine. Friendly bar staff. Both had the mussels starters which were ok and the bread was nice. My wife had the surf and turf main, priced at £40, which...surely would deliver at that price. Sadly not. The lobster was ok but the steak, cooked rare as requested, was grey, under seasoned and tasteless. She didn't finish it and didn't even bother asking for a doggy bag. She felt it was the worst steak she had ever eaten. I went for the chicken fajitas which arrived sizzling on a platter. The chicken was dry, massively under seasoned and the red peppers and onions weren't cooked properly. The salad I didn't even touch as it was so painfully boring to look at. My three tortillas were like cardboard and I ate just half of one and then gave up. Chips were only randomly cooked through so we both left most of those also. We gave feedback to the waitress when she cleared the table and went to pay. Whilst paying at the bar the licensee went behind the bar without acknowledging us in the slightest and told the lady taking our payment to take the fajitas off the bill. No apology; not even the time of day was paid to us. He even said to her tell them the fajitas have been taken off the bill'...why on earth he couldn't tell us directly is beyond me! It was rude beyond belief. We paid and left. Over the years we have been to many carvers, seafood evenings and meals out with family and friends at The Black Horse. I will never step through the door again and waste my money. I will do my utmost to make sure that anyone who asks why will learn the truth. What a dreadful experience!"
