"We started that morning in Rome, taxi to airport, flew to Basel, bus to Basel SBB, cable car up, then light rail to Murren, then hiked to the Rotstockhutte. I don't recommend anything so crazy. Leave time to get there well before dinner and have a beer or some wine. The 12 & 13 year old boys did fine, as did my wife, but I did run on ahead because I knew we would be late for dinner. Being late concerned me because of the one bad review from summer 2015 that indicated that being late meant not being fed. I should not have worried. It must be different staff or the reviewer had a very anomalous experience. The hut master, Lucy, was great. So were the rest of the staff. They were already serving the first course, which was soup, but they told me not to worry about my family about 15 minutes behind me. The place was at full capacity but they fed us well. Dinner was hearty and delicious and the breakfast was great, including alpine cheese and dandelion jelly. The alpine hut experience/subculture was new to us, so we did not know all the protocols (and may have missed the explanations earlier). But we watched and figured it out and only broke a couple taboos (I hope). The hike out there was not too difficult but more substantial than my research had led me to believe. I relied on signs more than map and may have inadvertently taken a longer route. Don't believe all the time estimates on the trail signs because some are pretty far off, both overestimating and underestimating. The hike was beautiful, as was the hut location, as was the hike down past the waterfall to Gimmelwald. A great experience that I highly recommend if not too out of shape and you at least sort of know your way around hiking and backpacking."

Great warm food for lunch! Perfect place for daytime break on way down to Mürren from Schilthorn! Friendly, hospitable service with homemade food. Yummy!

You need to walk in a few hours to reach the cottage, perhaps that's why the food tastes so good I don't know, but the limited menu is good and presented in a stunning location.

Walked miles just to get to this famous hut , even though the walk was beautiful the hut isn't really worth a visit. Usually mountain hut fare but nothing exceptional . Worth a visit just for the views getting there

We hiked here from Gimmelwald were dazzled to find this gem! Gleaming mountain peaks surrounded us, and it felt surreal to order beer enjoy some of the best berry pastries with fresh whipped cream we have ever had! We also enjoyed the delicious...wurst. We napped for a few minutes before the amazing hike back to Gimmelwald. View menu

Stayed here one night during our alp trek - was heading to a higher hut but injury forced us to shorten the trek and fortunately there was room. The hut provides showers and toilets, food and refreshments, sleeping quatters (basic but ample) with pillows and blankets (you need to bring a sheet or hire one there - not included). Not a destination in itself but it does not claim to be - this is a great place to stay the night while on a trek between huts.

This is a typical mountain hut. At 2000m in the mountains you expect basic facilities - cold water only, outside toilet block, large dormitory. But the hut enjoys a great location, is clean and well-cared for and well-run. It is small - staff are helpful and friendly. Be aware it is cash only, no wifi, and there is only one plug socket for the whole hut to charge a mobile phone! And there is a dairy next door - whilst cow bells are charming they will wake you at 5am unless you remember ear plugs!

We had the pork sausage (wurst), goulash and homemade plum cake with a 0,5 liter of radler (beer and lemonade mix). Everything was delicious and very reasonably priced (28 CHF total). I'd gladly return and order everything again, and more. The goulash and sausage were the best we had during our visit to Switzerland. The hike up is more strenuous from Gimmelwald than from Mürren, and both have a substantial elevation gain. All the better to work up an appetite for when you reach this establishment! View menu

As alpine huts go, this is a nice location, with good views of the surrounding Bernese Alps. We were a family with two young children. The sleeping arrangement was the typical mattresses on the floor in the attic with about 30 other hikers (not very...conducive to sleep). The half-pension consisted of salty alphabet soup and spaghetti bolognese for dinner, about average for a Swiss hut, and bread, cheese, jam (no butter), coffee/tea/hot chocolate for breakfast. As a small extra they also had made Swiss müesli. There is nothing wrong with the hut. The only issue is that it is not good value for money for a family. One adult is 70 Francs for night+half-pension. But the child discount is very s...

My boyfriend and I are love hiking and when I learned about these huttes I was so excited to stay in one. After a lot of research we decided to stay here and we are so grateful for our experience. It is a 2 hour hike from the town of Murren which offered us a great starting point. The hike was medium to challenging difficulty with the most amazing views. We started the hike early which allowed us to get to Rotstockhutte early to do further hiking from here as our base. The staff spoke English which was helpful as Canadians. The menu for lunch was great and we had the house made soup for lunch. It was a rich creamy delight served with bread and sprinkled with dried wildflowers on top. This hu...
