"We have stayed here twice in the past month our granddaughter needed to be close to Sudbury for exams which would have meant a very early start from her home. After browsing the internet, we chose to book at the Case. If only everywhere we stayed was as good as this. The rooms are cosy and very well equipped. Comfortable beds and pillows, top quality bed linen and towels, nice toiletries, all spotlessly clean, and with all the extras which add up to a very satisfactory stay a heated towel rail in the bathroom, an electric fan for hot summer nights, a blanket for chilly nights, umbrellas, ironing board and iron, hair dryer, TV, tea and coffee tray with additional snacks, fresh milk, even a charger for your phone. There is plenty of cupboard and drawer space. To wake up to birdsong outside your window is a real treat. But the main attraction of The Case has to be the owners, Barry and Linda. Barry produces food to die for last night's arancini with beetroot chutney and little dots of fresh beetroot and salad was a dream, this morning's breakfast included freshly squeezed orange juice, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with toast made from home made bread, and a wonderful selection of local Tiptree jams and marmalades. And the coffee oh yes, the coffee! Superb. Linda is front of house and everything else. What a star. As a team, they are the most welcoming and warm couple you could imagine, and the atmosphere is that of staying with old friends and being very well cared for. They opened the dining room half an hour early for breakfast to allow plenty of time for us to get our granddaughter to her exam without hurrying. Nothing is too much trouble for them. There is a small deli with some lovely items for sale, i brought back duck pate, home made there. Our grand daughter's exams are over but we will be visiting The Case again, many times in fact. It's worth a long journey if you want to experience real hospitality. Thank you, Barry and Linda for everything you did to make our stays so enjoyable."

"Lavenham feels like a step back in time with its medieval-style architecture and quaint shops selling cakes for just twenty pence. The village also boasts a selection of restaurants that are truly exceptional. Having previously enjoyed a fantastic meal at Maison Bleue in Bury St. Edmunds, I was thrilled to discover that its sister restaurant, The Great House, was located in this picturesque village. Housed in a building dating back to the 14th or 15th century and renovated in the 18th century, the restaurant exudes charm and history. Sitting next to the grand fireplace in the dining room is a unique experience in itself. One of the best things about dining outside of London is the more affordable pricing, and The Great House is no exception. For just £24.50, we enjoyed a three-course set lunch, with wine starting at £4.95 for a generous glass. For starters, we opted for the Fondue du Pious, a hearty bowl featuring a cheese fondue, soft poached egg, poached new potatoes, and croutons. The dish was sumptuous, decadent, and absolutely delicious. Another standout starter was the beautifully presented mackerel glazed in a rice vinegar and ginger caramel, served with squares of horseradish tofu and shredded radishes for a spicy kick. Although the portion size may have been a bit small, the flavors were bold and satisfying. Overall, dining at The Great House in Lavenham was a delightful experience, offering delicious food, historic ambiance, and great value for money. I highly recommend a visit to this hidden gem."

"A really disappointing visit. It started poorly when after just 5 minutes we had to ask to move tables as the air con unit we were sat under was dripping on to us and the table. The people on table opposite laughed and told us that 15 minutes beforehand another party had asked to move from the same table for exactly the same reason. Bemused why the front of house gave us this table when others were available and they knew there was an issue?? Service was poor. Waiter was very pleasant. We waited what seemed an eternity (best part of 1 hour) for starters with the waiter coming over voluntarily and apologising for the delay. Starters were good. Mains were a real let down. The 2 who had the red mullet were really disappointed and both said it was bland tasting. I had the chicken and whilst it was ok it wasn’t a very exciting or tasteful dish. Cheese board was good. Two other small points but things for the restaurant to pick up on. We ordered dessert wines. A young waiter came over and said “two white wines”? We said we had ordered dessert wines and he said “ I don’t know, maybe that’s what they are”. That’s really poor for a high end expensive restaurant. Final gripe was we paid a £40 deposit. When the bill came it hadn’t been deducted. Given we were told every booking had to pay a deposit for the themed evening this should never have happened and demonstrated a lack of attention to detail. Such a shame it was a really disappointing evening especially as we have had some great meals here before. Standards seemed to have slipped and we will avoid a themed night in the future."
