"Interesting that I would have to come all the way to Oberammagau to find great Mexican food in Germany. The Germans don't do spicy very well; schnitzel and bratwurst yes, spicy no. So I was skeptical when my wife wanted to go try El Puente because she wanted Mexican food. We've been to two places in Stuttgart, and both of them ranged from bad to on par with Taco Bell. The first thing that strikes you is the atmosphere. Very lively, great music (ranging from Tejano to other styles of Mexican music which I am unfamiliar with), and the decor is very interesting. I wouldn't say authentic, as authentic places in Mexico don't quite have their walls festooned with cattle skulls, serapes, and sombreros, it's understandable that they have to set the mood, given that the Alps are just around the corner. The food was great, well above what I expected. I had the Chili con Carne, and while this is usually a throwaway dish on the menu, I would say this should be a go-to menu item for anyone wanting a little spice in their life. Not overpowering spice, but it's enough to let you know that it's there. The fresh baked bread to dip into the Chili con Carne was also a great touch. My wife had the chicken enchiladas, which had a lot of flavor, the tortillas tasted very fresh, and the chicken was very tender. Overall, another place to put down in our books of regular places we will go when we are in Oberammagau (see my s'Wirsthaus review for another place)."

"Vist Oberammergau several times a year for work and always make I sure I come here, and as unimaginative as it seems, I always have the schnitzel - I just can't resist it. Perfect thin escalopes of pork in a breadcrumb which includes bacon bits, served on delicious buttery saute potatoes with onions - comes with a well dressed side salad too.You get 2 food size schnitzels per portion, which seems generous (though I've always managed to finish them off). Other dishes on the menu look good too (one of our party had the lamb and was very pleased) and the desserts are also very good. All in all it's a must-eat stop in Oberammergau for me. Wolfgang and his wife are always friendly, and welcome returning visitors with genuine warmth. Other staff can be very German (which of course they are) - not rude or impolite, just direct in a way which you don't normally find elsewhere. For example, a request for fries with the burger (let's face it, a very reasonable one) was met with a 'nein'. No explanation, no beating about the bush, just a straight 'nein' - at least you know where you stand. And the kitchen may close while you are finishing off your main course - don't expect to be told and asked if you would like to order dessert. Overall though, these are not reflections on the restaurant, but on the German tendency for plain speaking and rules. I've given it a 5, which is possibly generous, but it's more than a 4 - it's a great place and I will always return."

"Been here half a dozen times in a large group in various visits and has normally been good - good for the atmosphere rather than for the food. But last night was a let down. The waiter was grumpy - I know German waiters are efficient rather than warm and welcoming on the whole, but this one was definitely on the grumpy side and seemed like he was tolerating us rather than making any effort to make sure everything was OK. He finally sorted out our order, but still a few disappointments to come. I ordered the avocado and prawns, which turned out to be lettuce and prawns, their standard prawn cocktail. On the plus side it was a generous helping of prawns, but that wasn't what I ordered. I called Mr Happy over to ask about it, he consulted the menu (just in case I'd imagined it I suppose), then muttered something about the chef and left it at that. And the second carafe of white wine was close to undrinkable (but not so close that we didn't drink it!). Mentioned it to him, and he brought in the bottle it allegedly came from saying it was the same wine - but it most definitely wasn't. Had the usual pizza al castagno, with rocket, Parma ham and parmesan. Generous helpings of ham and Parmesan, but the centre of the pizza was a bit soggy, as if not quite cooked. All in all a bit of a disappointment, which could so easily have been avoided by a more helpful waiter (who I'm guessing doesn't rely on tips to supplement his wages) and just a little more attention all round. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say it's not always like this, but on last night's showing it's not worth more than 2/5."
