"Having checked out several restaurants on the main tourist trails in San Gimignano, my partner picked this one for dinner, some way along a side street. It turned out to be a brilliant choice. In addition to it's semi basement indoor seating, there is a mid size terrace with a view at the back, where we secured a table and watched the sun sinking slowly in the sky. If the weather is fine, I would favour the terrace over the indoor space. We ordered up a bottle of Vernaccia di San Gimignano (I highly recommend this varietal when ordered locally). After some discussion with our waitress we shared a really excellent wild boar tagliatelle as a starter, followed by thin sliced roast pork and potatoes for my partner and a Toscana salad for me. After letting that settle, we had the torta della casa betwen us. The quality and flavours of all the dishes reflected a thoughtful, local kitchen with respect for its customers. The two waiters who served us were super, and treated us as serious guests, not as tourists unlikely ever to return. Efficient, helpful and knowledgeable. I don't understand a number of the negative reviews here. The food is genuine, the staff effective and friendly, the location is much less touristy than most San Gimignano restaurants appear to be, and locals clearly eat here. A pre booked table for 10 slowly filled up beside us as we ate clearly a local dinner group which had chosen this location, not just stumbled upon it. If you want cheap and touristy, or pizza and a house wine, or to be sure that everything on the menu is available on the day, then I suggest there are better restaurants for you in San Gimignano. But if you prefer a more laid back environment, locally sourced food, a kitchen that cares, and staff who seem to know what they are doing (and do it graciously), then La Bettola del Grillo 2 should do you just fine."

"Bar Piazzetta is a short walk up the main street after entering the walls of San Gimignano. Right in the middle of the tourist shopping area with an amazingly big patio and inside dining area. You can sit and relax outside while watching people shop, walk, and talk. Where as the outside patio offers heaters in the winter time, we picked inside. With a friendly atmosphere, it made it easier to sit quickly and get served. Many Italian dishes to choose from. As we had been traveling abroad for 2 weeks, we were ready for a menu change. Bar Piazzetta gave us just that! So many choices to pick, and with such interesting descriptions of the food, we went with a burger and chicken dish. The burger showed up smothered with cheese, onions, mushrooms, and bread with salad on the side. The thin bread helped to maintain the original flavor by not overwhelming it with a bread taste. The chicken dish was stewed in tomatoes, garlic, onions, pepper; and came with a salad on the side. This dish was superb! The chicken was so tender, the garlic was tasty, and the veggies had a slight crisp to them; everything married well together and was top notch! Service was friendly, place was clean and even when busy, we were attended to very quickly. San Gimignano is a SMALL cute little walled medieval village and this place was exactly what we were looking for. If you ever have the opportunity to visit here...you will not be disappointed!"

"This place was my ancestral home and so the commentary may include some bias. My Italian cousins found the place while looking for a missing painting. The painting is still missing but we found this majestic and perfect villa with an accompanying landscape marked by...lavender, rosemary, fruit filled trees, oranges, lemons, tomatoes and vineyards. Needless to say the wine was magnificent. The red was my favorite but everyone also seemed to enjoy the white. Upon arrival we were greeted by Grazia who could not have been more accommodating. A true professional with regards to customer service. Everywhere we turned the beauty of the place and the landscape was mesmerizing. The air was filled with all these wonderful scents and the architectural splendor of the villa and surrounding buildings melted perfectly into the landscape. The current owners restored this place to its former glory and actually improved upon it because everything works perfectly well now. One can see there was a great deal of time and effort dedicated to this place and a thoughtful restoration was performed. The rooms are large. The bathrooms are great and the beds are comfortable. The dinner consisted of an antipasto, a soup course, a pasta course and the secondo which was usually a meat dish. The finale was a dessert and the wine flowed. You will definitely want to eat at least breakfast and dinner at the Torraccia because it is up on top of the hill. I would not drive the gravel road at night. It is basically a one lane road. I had a Smart Car and it was fine but not to be driven late at night. The staff gives you a big glass bottle of water at night with glasses and a friendly buon riposo. In the morning the breakfast consists of meats, breads, homemade jams, fruit salad, croissants, homemade tortes, cheeses, cereal and yogourt. There is clearly something for everyone. One negative....in a land of excellent coffee the coffee was american style. I asked for an espresso and it was decent but not great. Another small negative is the hair dryer. You will have a challenge trying to style your hair with this unit because as soon as you pull on it it goes on and then when it slacks it shuts itself off. I pulled my hair back in a ponytail after trying the first day to dry it. When you are there, the pool is great. I went for a AM swim and San Gimignano is in the background. What a great workout. Do NOT miss San Gimignano, or Siena. Siena's Piazza del Campo is the most beautiful piazza in all the world, second is the Pantheon in Roma. I took my daughter to Volterra and we enjoyed both the drive and the town. I left the Torraccia at AM and was at the Rome Train Station at AM. It is an easy ride on the (Florence to Rome toll road). The owners of the Torraccia are incredibly hospitable and regal in nature and I was honored to have met them. I know they deserve this special place and by welcoming others make the experience more globally appreciated. They are the perfect family to carry on the wonderful traditions my own family enjoyed for centuries here. I highly recommend the agriturismo for anyone wanting to relax amidst the Tuscan countryside."
