"The Rose and Crown in Chorleywood (note the location on the common, not the pub of the same name on the Harefield side of Rickmansworth) has long been known for excellent food, a good selection of beer, and the hospitality of the landlord and landlady. After lockdown it opened again for drinks, operating under careful but pragmatic restrictions. The restaurant at the back of the pub has been converted into a drinks area (as it used to be many years ago). Food has not been available until last week and the return is a triumph. Gone are the excellent steaks, pies, fish etc. to be replaced by a thoughtful tapas menu. We have eaten there twice since the resumption, both occasions proving excellent. Highlights included salmon ceviche (very fresh and tangy), sweet and sour spare ribs, a delightful lamb rump with a garlic dipping sauce, and octopus. Also added to the full menu is the traditional backed camembert (with the addition of roast garlic and an onion chutney, sweet potatoes fries, and pork belly. All the dishes are tasty, filling and innovative. There is also a small selection of afters, but so far I have not ventured there. We were told that the sticky toffee pudding is superb. Another advantage is that the food is a good excuse to explore Jeff’s wine list. We had an excellent Portuguese red blend. Capacity is down during the Covid-madness, so booking as advised. This will become more of an issue as word of the food gets out and the weather turns less favourable (there is some outdoor seating). One traditional touch is that punters are trusted to add a tip as they see fit, not be subjected to the ‘discretionary but dare to complain’ service charge seen in other local establishments (see my other recent review). The staff are diligent in cleaning the tables between guests and all the regulations seem to be followed. Great to have this favourite back."

"It takes a lot for me to write a bad review about a restaurant. I have to say that this has to be one of the worst fillet steaks I’ve had in a while. Probably because my boyfriend was bought out ribeye despite ordering a fillet steak, I then had to wait an extra 10 minutes for his steak to be cooked. They did not bother cooking a fresh one, left my one under a heater hence it being extremely tough and nearly breaking my tooth upon chewing it. I was however starving and had to eat! The peppercorn sauce tasted like a roast dinner gravy, and the what was supposed to be chimichuri tasted like garlic oil with a few parsley leaves shoved in. Don’t get me wrong, the waitress was extremely apologetic and kindly offered us an additional drink free of charge, however in my opinion they should have just cooked me a fresh steak. Whilst finishing off my free drink I heard the lady mention that we would be leaving soon and therefore we felt rushed to leave. Don’t get the steak deal on a Wednesday as I am pretty sure my wine was watered down and it’s clear to see all regulars were in for that deal. In my honest opinion, you are probably better off just going to Miller and Carter and spending a bit more money. As I said previously, I appreciate the ladies offer of a free drink but personally I feel like the meal should’ve been free as it was not the best. Again I really do apologise for having to put this review but I do feel strongly about being honest when reviewing places. Hopefully this can be perceived in a positive way in which they can improve. Thank you"
