"12 April 2012 Vijaya Krishna: Enter Penguin Undeterred by a weekend of gorging on chocolate, we booked in another curry for the week after the Easter bank holiday. After a break from the balti, we were keen to get tucked into a plethora of poppadum, paratha and pilau pleasures. After a lot of deliberation about the venue and turning down a chance to debut in Chennai Dosa on account of its no alcohol policy, we decided upon the South Indian, Vijaya Krishna restaurant Louise Penguin' Hitchen had the pleasure of joining the Brothers in Naans' (despite a number of let downs we are humble and forgiving chaps, and didn't mind giving Hitch The Stitch' a third chance). Prior to the curry...read more"

"Opposite the underground station, right above a pub, perfect!. The room was nice and quiet, even tho the pub was lively, and the choice on the breakfast menu was great, the food was cooked to a T !, highly recommended."

"We found this little gem on a trip to Fulham for football. Putney itself is lovely. We go to the restaurant each time we stay. The owner and staff are wonderful. Nothing is too much. The food is top notch and wine also. We had starters of spicey octopus and garlic mushrooms and mains rib eye steak and chicken breast. Served with fresh veg. Everything was lovely. No rush with service. Only down side had to pay couple quid for bread. Im sure complimentary won't break the bank. Love it"

"This is a terrific pub, you instantly feel welcomed and at home. It is full of real character, you can tell it is independently run. The food is delicious and menu is regularly refreshed, but not overly so. . Ben and the team are all very friendly, helpful and always accommodating on requests. Can't believe it has taken me so long to leave a review, frankly!"

"We have used this restaurant fairy often over the past couple of years as we live locally and the food has always been good and reasonably priced. However, recent visits during the winter months have not been such a pleasant experience. This is because the restaurant does a lot of take away trade with delivery drivers constantly coming and going. This is not a problem in warmer weather when the door is left open, but during cold weather it gets very uncomfortable as the door does not close properly, on our last visit there was a blast of cold air every time it was left open. We found ourselves having to get up every couple of minutes to close the door which became so annoying that we decided to leave the instant we finished our meals. I am sure that we cant be the only customers who have experienced this and hopefully they will get the door fixed, (although it has been like this for some time now). In the meantime I would recommend that you don't sit next to the door in cold weather as it can be really uncomfortable having to eat wrapped up in winter clothing! We have also experienced long waits on occasions during busy periods as they seem to prioritise the takeaway orders."

"Having driven past this place a number of times, and with a limited amount of Moroccan cuisine places in the area, I decided I'd take a visit for my birthday treat and was absolutely delighted with the food, service and ambience. Upon entry I was greeted by a warm welcome by a young man and given how hungry I was, I quickly decided on: Starters: Merguez (spicy sausage), Homous (good old classic) They both came out quite promptly and were delicious. For the mains, we went for: Lamb Tagine for two which consisted of 2 x Lamb shanks, with cous cous delivered in a clay pot. It took around 20 mins to arrive, but was worth the wait. Well cooked, with the lamb tender and well seasoned with a meaty sauce and saffron hint to it. I've got a big appetite and finished probs 3/4 of it with my other half the other 1/4. May want to order seperate dishes if you appetite isn't that big however. The whole place had a family feel and everyone serving us was smiling and genuinely interested in our experience. Will definitely go again and for lovers of North African cuisine in the area, would definitely recommend."

"I have eaten there regularly, as a friend lives locally, but never again, the arrogance of management and personal resembles something of lavish towers: incident 1 waiter nr. 1 comes up and spills curry on the table, no problem, waiter nr. 2 deletes the table and starts shaking his head at me over the spillage on the table as if it is my fault. incident 2, waiter brings me a bottle of beer I said I will pour it, he refuses to let me do this and insists that he pours it! incident 3 waiter comes to clear the table and spills beer over me, he and his colleague then laugh and I ask the administration for a rabatt the inconvenience and cleansing, he said that the best"

"I have ordered from them a lot over the years. their pizza used to be good but has fallen off in quality over the last year or so. It tasted very odd and the tomato base and mozzarella in my margherita tasted and looked like an over-cheesy mush. They need to take onboard well-meant criticism from their loyal customers base and up their game. Only then will I order again from them. Disappointed"

"the menu and the style of the place really reminds me of flat iron, but a little pricy version. the total food was good, steak was delicious, but creamy spinat on the side was not so good, it tasted as if someone simply spinat with single cream on a pan without other ingredients / pickes mixed. it is definitiw behind flat iron in terms of price-to-quality ratio in my list."

"After a mediocre dining experience a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised by both the service and the food upon my recent return to the Battersea branch of Indochinese restaurant Banana Tree. After short wait in the reception area, my friend and I were led to one of the private tables off the main room. As a shared dining hater, I was happy not to be seated at one of the long, communal tables. Both vegos, my friend and I shared the aubergine with caramel sauce for our starter. It was cooked to perfection and super tasty. For mains we both went for the Blackened Monk Noodles mine sans egg to veganise the dish. The portions were massive with a tonne of perfectly cooked tofu and tasty, crunchy veg served with the noodles. The noodles also came with a huge rice cake and crispy corn cakes. After having a starter too, I couldn 't quite finish my main but I put in a good effort! The menu is pretty big without being overwhelming and all allergens and dietary options are clearly marked. I often find dining in Asian restaurants a little tricky given that fish sauce is secretly hidden in many recipes; not so at Banana Tree as vegetarian dishes that have fish sauce in them are clearly marked. At around £16 per head including drinks the huge meals are great value and I 'd definitely go back for a cheap but tasty meal."

"A great 'local ' pub with a really nice vibe, it has a super range of drinks, does good food and is a wonderful place to watch sport on their tellies, mainly due to the atmosphere that prevails in this welcoming, dog friendly pub. Surprisingly it is also a place that you g families go especially on Sunday afternoons, probably due to the very good Sunday lunches. Always worth popping in for a quick one, only to settle, for two or three more. Great 'local ' pub!!!"

"Having eaten at this establish countless times before during my childhood, it seemed the perfect place to remedy the vestiges of alcohol in our system from the night before. Eagerly, my friends and I downloaded the Pizza Express app, a clever scheme by the restaurant to encourage students such as ourselves to visit the restaurant given the billion pound debt faced by the company. My friends both enjoyed a free dough ball dish for signing up whilst I refrained from ordering due to lack of appetite, saving my deals for another day. The food, as expected, was bog-standard, run-of-the-mill pizza express, food that we have all had before and will most likely have again. This was just about nice enough to justify the expenditure due to lack of proper competition in the area and the proximity of the restaurant. However, that being said, it was slightly sloppy, stodgy and lacking structure, typical to that of pizza express pizzas. No major complaints arose from the quality of the food as it was no different to that purchased usually from pizza express. However, our qualms with the experience arose from the mistreatment of our group by the staff. The attitude of staff was blunt in the settling of the bill, which had to be adjusted only once to include our offers on the app, necessitating the printing of a single extra receipt. This was met with frustration and disdain despite the fact that my friends had never used the app before and were unfamiliar with its operation. Given that my demographic, younger students who may not normally opt to eat there without the deals, is the target of these schemes, I was surprised by such shortness from the staff and at the different treatment given to young adults. That being said, the staff were, on the whole, very helpful. However, it is such a shame that only one waiter in particular ruined the experience over such a trivial issue. On the whole, the food was just about up to standard. However, we left with a bitter taste in our mouths and the desire to leave a review for the first time given that this behaviour was so out of order."

"this is a difficult choice. the atmosphere, the family running vibe and eating would really be high, but the service does not fit. eating is incredibly good and huge portions that taste very authentic and fresh. , however, we had to wait for 40 minutes to take a place, although we booked. we got a glass prosecco, but no one communicated with us. When we sat, we had to wait 40 minutes to order and ask 4 times if we could order. this pattern followed with dessert and asked for the bill. fortunately we were in no hurry and I had expected bad services before. it is a shame to read other reviews that are 2 years old that this was always the case. more personal needed and more attention, but good eating!"

"This was a cute little find. I went here with three friends and we were all starving! We waited about ten mins for a table which is good for Sunday brunch! We had everything from the full English to the Shakshouka (Moroccan baked eggs). Food was excellent and the waitress was lovely! The sausages and sweet potato fries are a must have. They do iced coffee and frapaccinos which were delicious. Wannabe Vegan"

"I'll say it again: Chicken Balti. Once you eat this you will never want to eat anything else ever again. It is a think of exquisite beauty and possibly the best curry have ever had and I have had many. I've been coming here for...about 18 years. The premises used to be pretty bad (terrifying toilet) but vastly improved although still very cafe-like. Staff are friendly and hardworking from Afghanistan I think. Who knew incredible curry comes from Afghanistan? Not me but I'm very glad it does. Sometimes your food will come with a complimentary salad, sometimes it won't. It doesn't matter. Go there immediately, order the Chicken Balti and for a while at least your life will be wonderful."

"This was my first ever time in a Sri Lankan restaurant and I liked it. We decided to go there for a friend's birthday dinner on what turned out to be a very busy Saturday night, so the atmosphere was very lively due to big group tables of people. After studying the menú beforehand I decided to go for the mutton rolls as a starter, and I went for 3 of them...but 2 of them would of been plenty! I very much enjoyed the crispy breadcrumb exterior of these mutton filled pancakes! The meat inside was tasty and they were nice and filling! For my main I decided to have the mutton string hopper fry which is fried shredded noodles cooked with vegetables, spices and mutton. I found it to be nice, albeit a bit dry but the flavours, spices and kick of chili heat was there, a nice dish! I've decided to give it 4 stars as we waited nearly an hour and a half for our food! I know it was ridiculously busy but from what I could see the food is quite easy to knock up and send out...maybe their menú is a bit too big considering they have an Indian menú also. Friendly and patient staff! Worth a visit if you enjoy your Sri Lankan food and value for money."

"Party of 5 family all had meals and drinks. Four had fish and chips which was lovely albeit mushy peas was a bit weird! I had pork and fennel sausages with mashed Jersey potatoes which was lovely and whilst didn’t look much in terms of amount it certainly filled me up enough but left room for choc brownies which 2 of us had although big with ice cream, one was softer and moister than the other but still nice. Would go back if around that area. Thanks guys for nice service"

"a new article by evening standard boasted that “Tooting is official rooting” and as here at the slb we were particularly pleased that “South is not the new east, it is better”. the standard is not alone in these views and since the prices for home and rental the young profis have slowly pushed further out of zone 1, inevitably new social centers begin to recover. tooting has long been characterized as an up and up area, as it is located partly close to popular clapham and balham, in addition to it is served by the northern line. for those who are familiar with the contrary, they will also know that tooting is home to a good selection of byo Asian restaurants, and the free entry late...read more"

"A bit of an all-round great spot in Battersea, whether it be for a pub lunch or something substantial before a night out in groovy Clapham. In winter, it's a great spot to get stuck into their **** mary's and while away a few hours with board games but it still manages to be quite airy and light in mid-summer For this particular outing, we're a group having dinner before heading to nearby Northcote Records for some boogying. I have the Earl Grey Gin with Fever Tree tonic and I love that Fever Tree Tonic (The Cristal of Tonic water) is served as standard. We then move onto the Prosecco and this is refreshingly good value for a bottle of fizz The menu is hard to choose between...read more"

"The only reason im giving it 3 is because of the staff who were exceptional. It was crazy busy. Waited over an hour from order of food to getting it. I got the chicken per picture. Not great, luke warm and a bit tasteless. But by that point I was hungry so just needed food. Didnt finish the plate. Not anywhere near a great Sunday roast. The caveat is, nice place for drinks with friends. Good atmosphere and GREAT staff."
