"Went to Vanchino's for breakfast based on its TripAdvisor rating in Watford and we wanted to go to somewhere that wasn't a chain restaurant. I'd never been but the pictures looked good and thought we'd give it a go. The restaurant is large, clean and welcoming if a bit dated. It was rather empty with only around 6 other diners but that suited us as it was peaceful for a mid-morning breakfast. We ordered our drinks and food, and this is where things started to go wrong. The waitress was lovely and helpful but our food took 50 minutes to arrive. I'd expect this of a busy restaurant but not one where there are only a handful of other diners, of which 4 of them already had their food. The descriptions of the breakfasts are so enticing, so we were expecting good things. Perhaps that's why the food was taking so long... alas no. The food was underwhelming to say the least and one of our orders was late, and wrong. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but it was very much as though they had given the very minimum required to create each dish; 2 strawberries on the strawberry pancakes, no cinnamon on the french toast, 2 sausage bap turned out to be filled with mangled sausage meat in an oily fleatbread which was much more akin to a kebab than a sausage bap. I really wanted it to be good, because there really aren't enough independent places for breakfast/bunch in watford but I doubt I'll be returning. I have heard good things about Vanchino's pizza so, if you're thinking of coming for breakfast, perhaps best to avoid and wait til dinner."

"If you know Watford, and you know the St Albans Road near the main railway station, then you will have entered Restaurant ville. There is an eatery or takeaway literally every 10 yards. Competition is fierce and the multicultural residents in Watford are represented at every turn. There are a couple of Caribbean restaurants in Watford, and this particular venue scores extremely highly in many aspects. Let’s get real. The food is to die for, in fact I drive over 30 miles to this hallowed emporium because I simply know that no where else is good enough. Forget your Turtle s and other chain Caribbean restaurants run by people who don’t even employ Caribbean chefs. If you want to savour food that could have been cooked in Montego Bay, Kingston or Barbados. If you want to have your lips tingling with the aromatic jerk, or the creamy akees that melt in your mouth, or the spicy rice and vegetable fare with callaloo, spinach or fried dumplings then there is only one place to go within 15 miles of Watford. There are African outlets nearer to London masquerading as Caribbean outlets, but trust me I have sampled almost all of them. I still come back to Roses. A friendly welcome, excellent cuisine, excellently cooked, now supplemented by West Indian deserts. You will not be disappointed if you stop buy either at lunchtime or dinner. Don’t be shy and try all of the menu, you will then become a firm fan happy that you discovered this establishment."

"I’ve been to Middletons a few times before and always a had a good experience/food. I was looking forward to the meal all week. First thing I said when we sat down was ‘this is a cosy table of 8’ our elbows were literally touching the next table. Felt uncomfortable having any sort of conversation as everyone was looking. None of the spot lights above us were turned on, we had to turn the torch on our phones on to read the menu, as did people either side of us. The only section in the restaurant with no lights on. We were told when booking and when we arrived that the table had to be back by 8.30. Starters came out 7.16pm we joked and said we’d be out by 7.45pm if it’s this quick. Wrong! We had to ask for our mains at 8.05pm. The veg in my halloumi and veg skewers was slightly warm and didn’t looked grilled at all. We asked for some more drinks in the long gap as we were getting thirsty and the waitress brought over someone else’s and even read out our correct drinks from the ticket and apologised. When I got my mains of steak and chicken with jacket and greens.. the chicken was half the size I’ve previously had and dry, steak was fine. Greens were cold and crunchy and potato was raw and hadn’t been baked in the oven at all and rushed in the microwave. Waitress was very apologetic and replaced these straight away. Both male and female toilets had a cubicle that needed assistance. Lighting in there was so bad that my husband walked in to another man as they just couldn’t see. When we also got up to leave, we knocked everything off the next table as they were so close, so that was embarrassing picking it all up. We should have asked for money off but just wanted to get out of there. This is the first time we haven’t tipped in a restaurant ever and my husband joked it was that bad he feels like setting up a trip advisor account just to leave a review. What a shame. As it was Valentine’s Day, I feel we’ve all been crammed in and rushed out. We certainly got forgotten."
