"Apart from being a very common male and female name in Japan, Makoto also means ‘sincerity’ or ‘truth’. The sushi and sashimi served at Sushi Bar Makoto are certainly a true taste of Japan, nestled away in Turnham Green. A girl I’m dating is a fan of the restaurant and she was excited for me to try their food. The sushi bar was closed to visitors because of Lockdown 2.0 so we ordered our food to be delivered to her place via Deliveroo one Saturday night in November. We chose the salmon combo, which consists of two pieces salmon nigiri, six pieces salmon roll, and three pieces salmon sashimi. We also had the spicy tuna inside-out roll (uramaki and a side of edamame beans. When researching this review, I was surprised to learn that salmon has only been used as an ingredient in sushi since the 1980s and was introduced by a Danish businessman (one of the only Western sushi variations that has been adopted in Japan . It’s hard to believe the Japanese didn’t include salmon before this because it is so delicious when served as an ingredient in sushi. For those unfamiliar with sushi, salmon nigiri comprises an oblong of vinegared rice with a slice of salmon draped over it. Salmon rolls are wheels of rice with salmon and spring onion stuffed in the centre, contained in an outer wrapper of nori (seaweed . The spicy tuna rolls look similar to the salmon rolls, however the rice is on the outside and the nori is wrapped around the tuna and vegetables in the centre. Lastly, salmon sashimi (which, strictly speaking, is not sushi is simply thickly cut pieces of raw salmon. It’s all very good. The fish in each of the dishes was really fresh and full of flavour. Fat grains of white rice are used and the vinegar used to hold the rice together gives it a lovely, slightly sour flavour, while also being satisfyingly sticky and starchy. I adore salmon so, for me, my favourites were the salmon nigiri and salmon sashimi. Our food came with several knobs of wasabi, which I enjoyed smearing on the salmon rolls and tuna rolls to give them some extra heat, and we got four sachets of soy sauce that I used to dunk my nigiri in. (If you’re like me and enjoy lots of soy sauce, I’d recommend having a bottle on standby because four sachets wasn’t really enough for two of us. We got a pretty generous portion of edamame and it’s always fun to bite the beans straight out of the pod to eat. The sushi was attractively presented in boxes with clear lids to show off the neatly prepared and colourful contents, and was even more beautiful eaten nyotaimori-style. Our food took about half an hour to arrive, was reasonably priced and was surprisingly filling. Chopsticks are provided if you’re feeling adventurous, or do like the Japanese do and simply eat it with your fingers. Sushi Bar Makoto is a hidden gem in west London and one you should truly try."

"We came here as a small group for dinner having read very good reviews. Unfortunately the meal was terribly disappointing across many fronts and as such I cannot recommend Restaurant Yoshino to anyone. Firstly, the food was substandard with many better Japanese options nearby. The sushi has meagre amounts of fish and is of poor quality the slightly greying and flavourless tuna sashimi was so thinly sliced that it was basically carpaccio. To say that the fish was practically translucent is not an understatement. Secondly, wagyu motsu ni (a soup made with various wagyu cuts is in fact entirely based on tripe. Now I do not mind tripe at all, however a part from the fact that it was not a particularly pleasant tasting dish, I think that the menu description is misleading and can imagine that other patrons may be left disappointed by having innards served without warning. Thirdly, while the grilled short rib was tasty, the grilled wagyu tongue was horrible. Tongue is meant to be a flavoursome cut, however in this particular case there was a peculiar after taste. Furthermore, although not known to be a tender cut, in this case the meat was so tough that it could only be swallowed in one single piece! Fourthly, service was poor as there was one waiter for the upper floor. Menu items that were ordered were not delivered. One positive was that the homemade curry rice was tasty. In summary, poor quality food and sushi, not worthy of the high prices."

"We have been several times to this restaurant and have enjoyed it in the past. The other day we went and had the sushi sashimi platter and mixed tempura and they were fine. But we ordered green tea and were served Jasmine tea. When I queried this with the server (not Japanese no one who works there is Japanese) she said that that was all they had. I can assure you that Jasmine tea is not green tea and it is not good enough to put green tea on the menu and serve jasmine instead. The worst part of the meal was the beef ramen. Absolutely Horrible. In a creamy white soup with no flavour apart from cream milk? Something insipid and white in any case. I think the server said that it had blended tofu in it or something like that? I have lived in Japan for a year and worked in Japanese restaurants after that for over 3 years and I can assure you that I have never seen, or tasted anything like that. The beef in it was stir fried for goodness sake! 3 minute noodles you cook at home have more flavour. I heard a neighbouring table ask if one of the 3 dishes on their table was actually beef teriyaki so maybe the kitchen was having a bad day. After watching them take down the 'CASH ONLY FOR SATURDAY LUNCH ' signs and paying the added 10% service charge for 2 people at 1630 in the afternoon we will never return. I did feed back that the ramen wa not good enough as we left and the server said that they 'd tell the kitchen. Just don 't go, or if you do see if they 're serving green tea instead of jasmine and just don 't, whatever you do, order the ramen or you can always try it at home by boiling milk and adding instant noodles to that. Seriously that bad. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £30–40 Food: 2 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 2 Recommended dishes: Sushi, Tempura"

"Obon: a petit Japanese udon restaurant that supplies a sense of Japan that cannot be found anywhere else in the whole of the Uk. (5 stars) Location: Obon is located close to the heart of Kingston but the road it’s on is considerably quieter. You must make sure to have a basic knowledge of Kingston in order to find an area to park and to also make sure you leave yourself enough time, taking the unpredictability of the traffic into acount. Even on a week day there can be traffic jams which can put a halt to your plans and due to the small amount of customers Obon can take its important that you not only book but make sure that you arrive at the agreed booking time. With this being said the staff are all lovely so if you are running late, a quick call is all that is required to just give Obon a chance to understand your position. The food: The array of exquisitely prepared sashimi will be sure to create the sensation that you are in a top Japanese restaurant in japan and the flavour of the fish does not fail to match expectations, which will be very high after just one glance at your meal. The fish is delicately seasoned and practically melts on your tongue, this causes a lovely sensation and is genuinely the finest sushi I have tasted in the uk and even matches a lot of the top restaurants in japan. On top of just the traditional types of sushi, which to many is maki rolls Obon also offers many other delicious options such as soft shell crab and even Unagi don, which I must highly recommend due to it consistently being the highlight of my meal. For those of you that were interested in the quality of the basic Japanese dishes such as miso soup or edamame they do not fail to leave you in grand anticipation for what is to come for they are, simply speaking, incredibly good. The miso, in my opinion, is truly remarkable and creates a lasting feeling of warmth throughout your entire body, on top of that it is far superior to other miso’s that I have tasted in all other areas of the world. Overall the quality of the food is something you would expect from a world famous Michelin star restaurant and if you want Japanese food it’s the only place I can recommend. The Restaurant: The restaurant itself is small but authentic in nature and because it only has a enough tables to host around 20 people at the most, the service is exceptionally good and your food is always out quickly so you will not be left hungry for very long. The staff are kind and friendly. And it’s always an enjoyable experience being waves goodbye as you leave the restaurant. You’re also able to watch as they prepare the food, which for some could be entertaining. There are Japanese photos scattered around the room and this further creates an authentic feel. The atmosphere is not lively but it is a restaurant and not a bar so is an ideal location if you are wanting high quality food. With this being said it is still a great place to go with friends and I consistently am able to have a great time no matter the occasion. Price: Obviously, the price of the food is always an important topic to come to and despite the cost of the sushi being slightly higher than you may expect from a small restaurant in Kingston, I would have to say that for the quality of the food it is ultimately a bargain. For three people, you would be spending around £100 so it isn’t cheap but you can go for cheaper types of food such as udon, which is still amazing quality and won’t set you back as much money. Overall: Obon is still my favourite restaurant in the whole of the Uk and is perfect for a special occasion but it isn’t the sort of place you’d go for a casual night out. The food is beyond incredible and thus they can cater for both children and adults by meeting every bodies needs. For anybody that enjoys sushi, I would urge you to give it a go, you won’t regret it"

Served on a bed of Chirashi sushi.; Xinxim Curry £9.40] (Vegan – A Brazilian African style curry with peanuts, chilli, coconut milk, peppers, butternut squash, peas and courgette. Served with basmati rice and a black eye pea fritter and a topping of molho a campanha; Souffle Pancake £10.50] (Vegetarian – Garlicky spinach, red onion marmalade, Camembert and Stilton cheese wrapped in a French style crepe. Topped with a chervil and dill souffle sauce and baked until puffed up. Served with a creamy lentil and tomato sauce flavour with ginger As my friend lived nearby, we came across Sky Apple and came here for dinner without a reservation. It is recommended to have a reservation as they were busy and fairly booked! We shared a starter, and each got a main. The Japanese style kebabs starter was tasty. It was served on top of rice which was a bit wet, but was seasoned like sushi rice. The Xinxim curry I got was good too! It isn’t spicy. It was creamy, sweet and savoury. I really liked the fritter on the side that was topped with refreshing. My friend enjoyed her Souffle pancake as well although it didn’t quite meet the expectations she had with the description. The crepe was more shortcut pasty than flaky and light to her. The restaurant is charming and eclectic – the walls were sky blue with painted clouds, and there were paper pom poms hung on the ceiling, a bright and fun vibe indeed! The service was good. Overall, the food was tasty, not cheap but still quite reasonably priced. I liked that it wasn’t the typical vegetarian and vegan food (i.e. hummus, burgers, etc. , and that although the menu isn’t extensive, they offer a variety of cuisines."

"Mugen has hands down the best Japanese food in London. Fresh, beautifully prepared, and consistently delicious. We’ve been several times and the quality never disappoints. However, the service this time was shockingly poor and genuinely unpleasant. There seems to be only one staff member fluent in English, an Indian runner who initially greeted us warmly, remembering us from a previous visit. Unfortunately, a mistake was made with our order (we asked for a salmon roll and received a salmon bowl instead), and when we tried to clarify, the same staff member became extremely aggressive. He began loudly arguing with us, insisting we had ordered the wrong item and refusing to change it. It escalated to the point where he was shouting at our table and wouldn’t allow us to correct the order — it was uncomfortable and humiliating. Despite the poor handling, we chose to keep the service charge out of respect for the rest of the team, who were professional. But the lack of apology and the awkward attempt to joke with us on the way out made the situation worse. We love the food and would return — but next time, we’ll ask to be served by someone else. This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable and needs to be addressed. David. "I would give the food 4 stars but the service 2-3. Not so much about the taking of orders and bringing of food but due to the way we were treated as the restaurant was closing. When we made a booking for 9:30pm we weren’t told that we would need to leave by 10:15pm. The waiter happily took our order, brought us our food and as we were still finishing our meal having not even reached coffee or dessert a bill was placed on our table. We ignored it. After all we were still eating. 3 minutes later the manager came over insisting we pay. We did. We still had our wine to finish and weren’t asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. There were other clients still around us. Chairs started to be put on tables around us. This was 10:15 please note having been given less that 45 minutes to eat and not being told that was the case. As my friend and I were still finishing our wine, we were told the restaurant was closing and asked to leave. We pointed out that we still had to finish our wine and this was not the way to treat paying customers. The reply was a shrug of the shoulders by the manager and that the restaurant must close at 10:30pm. To cut a long story short we were made to leave having not even been allowed to finish. I would advise people to choose other sushi restaurants. There is plenty of choice around and a restaurant displaying this behaviour should not be allowed to operate."

"We started with the yuzu yellowtail tiradito. After the first bite, my partner and I exchanged glances, realizing that this level of flavor could easily compete in fine dining restaurants. It was a complex combination of sweet and sour, with a lovely hint of spice, and the yellowtail tasted incredibly fresh—no slimy or fishy scent or taste whatsoever. Next, we tried the mixed tempura. Initially, we were disappointed that there was no standard dipping sauce, but once we took our first bite, we understood: it was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and too much sauce would have detracted from it. You could genuinely taste the freshness of the ingredients. My partner and I appreciate that true Japanese chefs focus on detail, so we paid close attention to how the food was prepared and presented. The shrimp tails were impeccably clean, with no black markings, and the vegetables were equally fresh. We also ordered the pork katsu curry, which came piled high with a tender pork fillet and a wonderfully robust Japanese curry sauce that was rich in flavor (unfortunately, no photo, as I was too caught up in enjoying it). As for the chef and the restaurant itself, I discovered this gem early one morning when I happened to pass by and checked the high reviews even though it was closed. I decided to return later that evening. They don’t take reservations since it’s a small place, particularly known for takeout, with a bar-style setup where customers sit along the window next to where the sushi chef works, plus one small table off to the side. When we arrived for dinner, we were surprised to find no Japanese staff working there at all; I even stepped outside to double-check that we were in the right place. We decided to go ahead and order, and we were thrilled we did. While chatting with a Sri Lankan cook, we asked how his food turned out so well, and we all shared a good laugh. He has been in the Japanese fine dining scene for 25 years and wanted to open his own small restaurant offering high-quality food at affordable prices. We ended up discussing Japanese cuisine for two hours—including how they store, prepare, and present their dishes. They emphasized that they only use the finest ingredients, even down to the salt for sushi. The staff are wonderful people, highly skilled in what they do, and they truly deserve recognition. Thank you for the delightful meal; it was a pleasure to meet you all. P.S. Special thanks for the off-menu aburi salmon!"
