"DIl the Bear is a well regimented and efficient pleasant café serving beverages, pastries, quality cakes, tasty breakfasts and imaginative lunches. First find a seat, decide what you want, return to the counter to order and pay. Take-aways may be ordered directly at the counter where high stools are available at the bar opposite for waiting. Dil now only accepts card payment, they accept neither cash nor cheques. The usual selection of coffees is made by the barista staff and food is cooked in a small kitchen at the rear. The pastries and cakes are homemade and are regularly featured on Dil’s Facebook page. A selection of cold drinks is available. Menus are available on clip boards beside the counter for perusal at your table and a list of specials is written up each day. The café is closed on Mondays except sometimes when Monday is a bank holiday then the café is closed on Tuesday instead (Usually notified on Facebook). Prices are moderate to high but reasonable. There is additional seating on the pavement under cover of an awning. Dogs are allowed outside but not at the inside tables. Blankets are offered for cold days. There is a toilet at the rear opposite the kitchen. When the café is busy it can be difficult to obtain a table without going all the way inside seeking a free seat. In these circumstances, we find it necessary to ask the knowledgeable staff if there are any tables free rather than mount a full-scale expedition to locate one. Tap water may be obtained by customers at a service point opposite the counter on a strictly self-service basis. Beware: breakfasts may only be ordered up to 11:30 while lunches may only be ordered from 12:00. The staff are helpful, kind, and pleasant and customers ordering breakfasts or lunches may negotiate substitution items in most cases."

"Made a late booking for the Sunday roast spoke to the lovely Wendy the manager, over the phone she done everything she could to accommodate myself and partner. What a lovely warm welcome we got. We were welcomed like old friends. The food was amazing home cooked hot food. It felt like going to someone’s house for Christmas Day. Can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. The service was spot on, the staff lovely and welcoming and the atmosphere was relaxed and spotlessly clean. The prices were reasonable. We enjoyed a lovely beef roast with all the trimming including extra gravy, follows by aunties homemade pavlova. I don’t normally leave reviews, but felt I had to after visiting this gem of a place. Which I found via trip advisor so thought only fair for me to also report back after my Visit. If your near or staying in Southend and don’t visit this restaurant your be sorry. Can’t rate highly enough. Thank you Wendy and team. See you again soon. Lindsey and Mark from Kent"

"This place was so phenomenal! I got my outdoor dining fix. It's disturbing the number of times I think about their macaroni and cheese ball appetizer. By far the best appetizer, and it says it's a homemade recipe, I believe them! I've never had that macaroni and cheese flavor, so good. Deep fried, it just makes sense, and it's probably one of the best things on the menu. Everything is great about this. You can feed your whole family and get a great dining experience, and it feels like it'll cost you an arm and a leg, but their prices are so reasonable you can bring your whole family and have dessert!"

"enjoyed the service and eat. the waitress has often checked, but not too much. they enjoy all foods par lamb balls lack taste, perhaps more flavor. last time I visited before the pandemic and they had more on the menu, including the trufflemac n cheese I wanted to recommend again, but no longer on the menu. Chin and Lamb/Gat halal. beef is not."

"Firstly no issues with our server, she was very attentive...food selected and served without a hitch and enjoyable up until I noticed a different server cough into her hands, wipe them on her jeans and then touch her hair!!! Really, this is basic hygiene (or lack of) regardless of whether you work in hospitality or not, I did point this out to her directly to which she apologised and said she would wash her hands only to then witness a chef in an open kitchen wipe his nose then go and handle food without washing them??? Absolute disbelief...addressed my issues with a manager (I think, she was wearing a love heart cardi) off she went, no feedback from her and a bill for two at almost £70.00 inc service charge. When I approached the manager to ask why she 'd not come back to me, all I got was that she 'd spoken to them and it was a natural reaction and what do you want me to do??? it 's really NOT acceptable, it 's an absolute disgrace."

"The restaurant is never open, even during the hours they claim to be. It's very strange. I've tried going several times, but there's never anyone there. Food: 1, Service: 1, Atmosphere: 1."

"Been here recently for bottomless brunch for 1st time. Now whilst the service and the staff were great, the rest was a bit disappointing, considering you pay almost 40 pounds one would expect more food and better drinks. We were in 6, all plates were like medium to small portion size, I had burgher and was tasty but small, fries not included which is very strange for the price. Yes u can drink as much as you want for 2h, thing is their cocktails had almost no alcohol in it. I had 8 cocktails so did my friends and we left pretty much sober. I guess they don't want ppl to get drunk and loud there, but then at least adjust your price. 34 pounds for small burger and juice water isn't a good deal. Nice service and staff but no money value"

"Great restaurant, very atmospheric with amazing interior. Great place to go for a casual/more fancy meal with drinks. The night we went had a limited cocktail menu but even the cocktails they had were great tasting and had good amounts of alcohol. Food is delicious and good value for money, only the cocktails were slightly expensive."

"Stopped in with a group of 6 while passing through Glasgow on vacation. We chose Roast mainly due to the high ratings on trip advisor. We placed our order with the cashier and sat down while we waited for our order. The cashier who also doubles as a food prep began cleaning up, clearing customers dirty dishes, mashing food and garbage down into the trash can with his bare hands. When he was done he wiped his hands on his apron, guess that made them all clean. The cashier proceeded to help the next customers who came in. After taking their order he began making their sandwiches. At this point it was a train wreck and no one in our group could look away. The cashier got food from the sandwich on his finger, licked it off and went back to making the sandwich. The whole time we were waiting we never saw the cashier wash his hands, and believe me we were all watching in disgust. The only saving grace is everyone ordered hot items which were prepared back in the kitchen out of sight. I’m just hoping the cook had a better understanding of basic hygiene. The food was fine, nothing spectacular but in all honesty everyone had lost their appetites after watching the cashier’s disgusting display."

"Booked for a pre theatre meal but left hungry and disappointed. Walking in it was unclear if it was a bar or a restaurant and hard to know where we were meant to find our table etc. There has obviously been a party or something earlier as ticker tape all over the floor and he place felt shabby and unclean. Live music started whilst were there, which generally I enjoy but I was underwhelmed and it was so loud it made it impossible to have a conversation. Over 45 minute wait for tapas starters which were underwhelming. Considering g they claimed to be cooked fresh the papayas bravas were soft not crispy and he sauce underwhelming. When mains arrived we were pushed for time to get to the theatre. My burrito bowl was 80% rice; 15% beans only about 3 small pieces of chicken, which was bland and to add insult to injury was tepid (so much again for freshly cooked). My friend’s enchilada was at least hot, just poor quality and tasteless. We raised a complaint and the only offer was to remove the DISCRETIONARY 10% service charge they’d added!, Will NOT be visiting again. I thought even though this was a chain, it was a relatively small chain and there may be some quality control. I was wrong."

"How was the Cross Keys you ask?.....in one word Awesome . First time back in the keys in years and this visit was based on a food recommendation. This recommendation did not disappoint! I had the special which was a Greek gyros with tzatziki and a side of pulled pork on chips, a taste sensation ensued Wish I 'd taken a pic as it was delicious and great value for money! Our waitress was great and the quirkyness of the inside is well worth a visit on its own merit! I could sit for hrs in the toilet just reading the comic walls!! I highly recommend the food and the ambience! You will not be disappointed. Great venue for a date night so do it, it 's so worth it!.....(this is not a paid review or the words of an actor!! ....."

"unfortunately I was really disappointed today by the service. read iguanas told us that they had only two people in the kitchen when we arrived and eat can take a little longer, but we waited for two only for an hour. I think how long we would wait if we had ordered two main courts. 25 minutes for our drinks we had to ask several times. we spent almost two hours in the restaurant the majority of it was satt waiting. overall disappointing."

"Great place with amazing staff. My first time here, came in just before closing time and lovely Hannah recommended me a tasty sandwich to try as well as making a meal with really delicious chips too. Can't fault it and the staff are helpful and so nice. Would recommend to anyone looking a takeaway lunch."

"St Martin's Coffee Shop in Leicester is a hidden gem that I absolutely adore. I have visited for breakfast and brunch multiple times, and it never disappoints. The food is by far the best in Leicester, with a wide variety of delicious options on the menu that are served quickly and piping hot. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the cozy and comfortable space offers a range of seating options for accessibility. The smashed avocado toast with bacon, eggs, and hash browns is a must-try, with perfectly cooked toast, seasoned avocado, juicy feta and tomatoes, runny eggs, crispy hash browns, and delicious ketchup. The coffee is excellent, and there are plenty of other amazing choices on the menu. In the evenings, the venue transforms into Crafty Burger, known for having the best burger in the U.K. My only critique is the lack of dairy-free options for milkshakes. Overall, I would rate this place 11/10 and would be devastated if it ever closed. Don't miss out on this amazing spot!"

"We arrived and immediately didn't feel welcomed, it was our first time so we needed time to read the menu to see what was on offer and there is quite alot to choose from, we felt very rushed and they seemed to be surprised that we wanted to sit inside and eat almost like we weren't allowed to. the food was mostly ok apart from the cakes that were rock solid, no baby change in the toilet and they said we could change our baby on the floor in toilet?! First experience wasn't great to be honest, doubt we will come back."

"great staff, but eat a bit average. the curry chicken from partner was good, but my rippchen did not fall from the bone and on places was a bit hard. had it better. also there were two hot parties in one was calm, the other was not. Obviously, a restaurant for young people (which are not us) and I will give it in future a failure. portsmouth restaurant in this chain much better."
