"We had a disappointing experience at the Hengist tonight. Despite a birthday celebration, we were seated next to a loud table, and despite requesting a change, no alternative was provided. The food, while tasty, arrived cold, leading us to send the main course back for reheating, resulting in overcooked dishes. Challenging the service charge revealed a suboptimal response. To make matters worse, we endured explicit and inappropriate conversations from a neighboring table, and when brought to the waitress's attention, her apology fell short. Despite the restaurant's reputation, it seems they prioritise profit over a pleasant dining experience, especially during busy seasons. It's regrettable that what was once a delightful spot now appears to have sacrificed its standards for the sake of December's high demand and pricey cocktails."

"The positives are it’s a quint pub and the roast was well cooked. The negatives are that the service was poor very young staff seemed to enjoy chatting behind the bar rather than serving, consequently all our roasts took ages to arrive and were luke warm. Equally the desert rhubarb crumble was Luke warm and the rhubarb was not properly cooked. Could it have lived up to the earlier reviews? My answer is probably yes, but would I go go there again, that’s a hard one to answer, but probably not. Why because standards are normally ingrained and it shouldn’t be hit or miss. When I told the very young waitress our food was not hot she acknowledged my comment and ignored it! What might have been"

"We, a group of 10 people, turned up on a busy Saturday lunchtime without pre-booking, but the staff at Makars didn’t bat an eye. They were great, finding us somewhere to sit and being so friendly. The food was amazing. It was very clear what was and wasn’t suitable for vegans on the menu, and the waiting staff were also very knowledgeable on that subject. I had the ‘rumbledethumps’ vegetable bake with onion gravy and mustard mash, all vegan, which was really nice. I had the vegan apple crumble too, but sadly they don't stock any vegan I've cream so it came with sorbet and the combination didn't really work. Updated from previous review on 2021-09-29"

"The food was delicious but I thought the suya beef could have been seasoned more even without the suya pepper. The sides were mouth waterring staff were amazing 10/10. We stayed for the night club after and it was good...live...music was on Point but could have done with more bashment. Definitely come here on Saturday's it gets packed with good vibes."

"This as far from a five star hotel as you can get in this area. And they don 't care. While not staying there, after a day walking around central London, I was tempted by their street signage advertising drinks and shisha on their rooftop Soho Sky Terrace, on the 6th floor. There was only 1 other table of 4 people when I walked in. Two staff seated behind bar. No welcome from them, both on their phones. They were casually dressed in jeans and hoodies. I walked up and ordered a glass of wine (they only had a selection of 2) and a shisha. Pleasant setting with rooftops view but old and run down seating. Dirty table.. I asked them to clean it. Wine was served in a plastic glass and was definitely off. I requested a fresh one which took 10 minutes as he had to go away to get a new bottle. There were 3 outdoor heaters and it was a cold evening, so I asked if they could switch one on. He replied no..we 're out of gas . I said what, on all 3? He shrugged and said yeah..that 's why the other table left . My work colleagues were going to join me..I said don 't bother, we 'll go elsewhere . The bill was £66.50. £16.50 for a glass of very average wine and £50.00 for poor shisha. My mistake for not checking prices before I ordered but totally overpriced for the area (which I am very familiar with). No wonder they had no one one there at 7pm on a Thursday evening."

"from beginning to end excellent! I called to reserve a table they missed my call, but within 10 minutes I called back. in the night we were treated with friendly staff to a fantastic service. the food was cooked to perfection with undoubtedly the best Turkish food I had in the old! the portion sizes are very good value for money, and what we did not eat, they packed for us. only one thing I would change are the small bottles koks, doses would be better overall will definitely return soon"

"that's quite a lot that's all about it. the cheshire cheese in the city is a fantastic place to finish at the end of a hard working day at work. they have great beers on hahn and even better bar food to go with it. The only thing I see here is that this could be much too much of a Monday night habit as I want. but then I'm not sure if that's a good thing."

"This is possibly the worst pub manager I have ever encountered! I have been a frequent customer at this establishment for many years and have never seen such lack of presence from a manager. He often leaves only one person to tend the bar while he remains upstairs, and if called upon for assistance, he disappears after just 5 minutes. He is lazy, arrogant, and disrespectful towards his younger staff members. I have witnessed this behavior firsthand. As a result, many regular customers are beginning to take their business elsewhere."

"Probably not after this recent visit. The whole place was very cold. It wasn’t enjoyable to have the meal when it was so cold around. I get that it was very cold out last week but still. I feel like my meal wasn’t as good this time, compared to how wowed I was on my last visit in the summer. Mine was more like warm than hot. "Been here a few times now and I have to say, this place is great, I wish I could visit more often. The food is outstanding, and the staff are the nicest people. If you feel put off by the pricing I'd look at other places menus and work out roughly how much you'd spend on the food and see how it compares, as I feel you get a lot more value for money here than anywhere else. Especially on the lunch menu. Also the way they cater to allergies puts other restaurants to shame. I know I can bring anyone here and they'll find plenty of good options and be allergen safe at the same time. Once again I look forward to returning. Vegetarian options: A fair amount of vegetable and tofu options for a lot of dishes. But double check their menus in their website if unsure. Dietary restrictions: They have specific menus for dairy and gluten allergies, and having visited with someone who had a dairy allergy I know they deal with it very well and there's still loads of choice for them."
