"The night at Pulia’s was far from a great experience. We went as a group of four to celebrate my wife’s birthday with our daughter and her boyfriend. Upon arrival all appeared to be OK, however this soon changed. As luck would have things none of us have major allergies, but there was no mention of this subject from our waitress and although the menu had a statement regarding allergies along the bottom none of this was mentioned when we placed our food order. Our starters arrived eventually and all was going well, then it came to our mains, firstly two dishes of vegetables were brought out and placed onto the table a few minutes latter three of the four mains were brought out, by this time the vegetables were cold. My wife had to wait another five minutes before her meal appeared and even then, the potatoes that she ordered were missing and these took another five minutes to arrive. After talking to our waitress about the situation we appeared to be getting nowhere, so I asked to talk with the manager who turned out to be our waitress. She offered my wife a free drink and a free desert, but all we wanted was a nice meal together not three of us eating our meals whilst the wife watched on. I cannot recommend Pulia as the food was very expensive and the service was extremely poor, the actual food was average and certainly not worth the amounts charged. There was no offer to refund some of the monies for the cold food and although there were some apologies it failed on many levels and made what should have been a joyous affair a very disappointing evening. We won’t be returning."

"Travelling from Newtownards through Kircubbin towards Portaferry, you will pass Saltwater Brig. And it would be quite the mistake on your part if you didn’t stop for a bite or a beverage at this long-established (circa 1765, would you believe? pub and restaurant. “The Brig” has a traditional feel, not only in the comfortable interior with a cosy “snug”, main bar and relaxing beer garden with its beautiful views over the Lough, but also in the menu, featuring lots of pub-grub style favourites using top quality locally sourced ingredients. We were greeted by the wonderful Orla, who has been at the helm of Saltwater Brig with Joe for nearly twenty years, and enjoyed one of our favourite white wines, a crisp, summery Green Social Verdejo while we perused the menu. And the chef kindly sent out an amuse bouche of Cream of Chicken White Onion Soup to whet our appetites! To start, the delightful Donna served us a Portavogie Prawn Cocktail with Hand Shelled Prawns, Mixed Baby Leaf Cherry Tomato Salad, Salsa, Marie Rose Sauce, served with Wheaten Bread. We also had a bowl of Fresh Strangford Lough Rope Mussels in a White Wine Garlic Cream, with Toasted Sourdough to mop up the delicious sauce. To follow, the Seafood Combo-an incredible selection of Beer Battered Portavogie Scampi, Crispy Salt Chilli Squid on Asian Slaw, Lemon Black Pepper Crumbed Cod Scampi, Battered Smoked Cod Goujons and Trio Of Dips, came with a choice of side. We went for some golden, crispy chunky chips. And the Pan Fried Seabass Fillets on Herb Crushed Potatoes surrounded by a White Wine Cream Sauce packed with Prawns, and served with Tender-stem Broccoli was delicate and delicious. To finish, the Spiced, Bramley Apple Crumble, fragrant with Oats Cinnamon, came with a jug of steaming Home Made Vanilla Custard Vanilla Ice Cream. And for a nightcap, the extensive Whisky Menu has plenty of old favourites, and some newer drams. Thank you so much to all the team at Saltwater Brig for a great evening of food, drink, and craic!"

"Shocking dining experience! An absolute travesty!! This used to be a superb pub (service and fayre); in the days when its exterior was adorned in a lovely duck egg blue, in keeping with it’s wonderfully quirky name. Stood at the bar we were ignored by the 3 members of staff engaged in private conversation. After a few minutes of awkwardness, we had to ask for some service. The menu (which had suffered more than it’s fair share of spillages) was not very extensive (only 3 grill choices). The wine menu was poorly constructed of single sheet papers squeezed into a narrow binder, not easy to open and peruse (it fell apart in my hand). The wait for food was substantial and our 2 sirloin steaks were under par. Not very hot, too much fat, and under cooked but still a weighty price at £24.00 for 8ozs. We weren’t asked if everything was ok and given the poor staff patronage, we lost the will to complain! I ordered a second glass of wine and was alerted to a conversation between two members of staff who couldn’t locate my order. So, one advised to ‘just give him Malbec, as it’s already open’. I hadn’t ordered a Malbec but it was poured and they gave it to another member of staff, without telling him it was the wrong wine. He duly apologised but much uncomfortable toing and froing ensued, while we were trying to eat, to locate the wine I had ordered which was to no avail. Staff clearly lack managerial direction. A disappointing experience; a clear demise of service and standards in this establishment, we couldn’t wait to leave! NOT recommended and will NOT be going back!"
