"I had no idea that Reading had a wine bar this fun, it’s a very well kept secret. From the outside it looks like a shop, but inside it’s all cosy tables surrounded by walls of wine. We chose to sit upstairs, which is quieter, out of the draught from the front door and felt a lot calmer. It’s candlelit, with piles of board games and a great atmosphere. The idea is that you have a card to put in ‘The Machine’ and then select your chosen wine and the size of the glass you’d like. You then present the card and pay at the end. This worked well for us; I wanted to try a mouthful of all the different wines (red, white, rose and an Orange Wine) and my companion wanted to try a large glass of every red available. We ended up getting through a couple of cards. Originally, we’d planned to have a couple of drinks and then move on to get dinner. But then we saw the menu and the chef. The menu was an array of exciting tapas, put together by the lovely Laura. I’d been to her previous business venture (Nomad Bakery) and it had been amazing, so we stuck in and ordered most of the menu. It didn’t disappoint; in fact it elevated the evening from fun to outstanding. I loved the Halloumi Burek, I was over the moon with the orange infused rice pudding. It was some of the best food I’ve had in Reading. Worth noting that they only do food on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings; I don’t think we would have enjoyed ourselves so much with just nibbles. I’m a bit puzzled as to why some reviewers have been asked to pay up front. We definitely weren’t, we just ran a tab with a card behind the bar for food and drink. I want to give this more than 5 stars. I want to go back again and again and eat and drink and laugh. You need to book because it gets busy, but that’s because it’s so good."

"I don’t know whether to put this on Facebook, what do you guys think… We went to The Three Shires for Sunday lunch after seeing some good reviews and nice pictures on Social Media. I was particularly enthusiastic to go as I always enjoyed The Three Shires when it was a Wine Bar. Unbelievably, we’re really struggling to find somewhere really decent for a Sunday roast, a reasonable sized portion with good meat, well cooked variety of veg, a Yorkshire pudding and lashings of gravy real gravy, not Bisto. *Overall score 0/10* We were booked in for 2:30pm and we arrived exactly on time, albeit a bit wet. We’d walked past 4 members of staff before anyone engaged with us. Anyway, we were given a choice of tables and we sat down. It was a wee bit small, in the thoroughfare opposite the bar, but it was ok. However, Fiona’s chair was broken, so she (with some late help) swapped it with a chair from the other table. That was broke too but, I was seeing that she was loosing the will to live, so she put up with it, she just didn’t lean back! We ordered drinks from a nice, but very inexperienced waitress and looked through the menu. Fiona wanted a roast chicken dinner, but that wasn’t an option, but, upon asking our waitress, she said that wouldn’t be a problem. She disappeared for a few minutes and when we next saw her we ordered the food about 2:45pm by this time. A bad start, I thought, but bring on the lovely food and all will be alright. Then we waited and waited and waited. The staff all seemed to be in chaos, at one time, four of them trying to work out a bill with the calculators on their mobile phones. Then we waited and waited and waited. At 3:30pm, an older woman came over and apologised. Fiona explained we were really stuck for time as she’d just come from visiting her mother in hospital and she had to get back. No problem, she said, I’ll check how long it will be. Immediately she came back and promised 3 minutes. 10 minutes later, we were still waiting, so we got up. I asked for the bill for the drinks, a pint and two alcohol free Gin Tonics, but they said there wasn’t a charge. In my opinion, the first thing they did right. We headed back to the car and got a drenching from the rain and came home. We don’t think a nice, relaxed, tasty, good value for money Sunday lunch is rocket science, but, clearly we’re, mostly, expecting too much definitely from Huffys at the Three Shires!"

"Me and my friends have been coming to Desco lounge for a while now but I can truthfully say this will be the last time that we visit. We ordered 2 lounge breakfast, whilst the drinks arrived promptly we had to wait a fair while for our food. When it arrived the bacon was burnt and the beans were cold. I went to the bar to speak to one of the servers as none had bothered to come and check back our food and were clearly far too busy on a Monday afternoon to accommodate us. The portion size difference was crazy aswell considering we had the same meal! We wanted to order some extra beans and toast so we asked one of the ‘waitresses’ if we could order with her, she answered very abruptly we don’t do table service. And were told we have to go to the bar or order online. It was as if we were being a pain asking her these questions. As we were waiting for our fresh beans our food was getting cold so once it had been 10 minutes since we had ordered the beans I asked the same server how long they would be she replied ‘you haven’t been waiting 10 minutes’ so I showed her the proof on my order. She walked away as I was still speaking with her and a few minutes later returned with my food. I wouldn’t even understand this behaviour if she was new as she was so rude to us, as if she forgot we were the guests. The worst thing is when you order online it asks if you would like to tip! The cheek of it!"

The 606 Club

The 606 Club

90 Lots Rd, London, United Kingdom

"The Club is one of London's oldest and finest Jazz clubs. It is discreetly tucked away in a minor street between the river Thames and the western end of the Kings Road. You will not necessarily find international or superstar Jazz outfits there but, on a good night, the gigs are fine. You can be a member of the club but non-members are welcome, too.Due to licensing restrictions, alcohol is served to non-members only with meals. During the week (Monday-Thursday), non-members can come down for soft drinks, if there is spare capacity. Weekend nights are full and one can be admitted as a non-member only if coming in for dinner. There is a music charge of a head Monday-Thursday, Friday and Saturday and on Sunday. This is added to the dining bill. Food is Bistrot-like and is normally a courses affaire. You have a choice of about varied starters, main courses and three deserts. With music and service, expect to pay about per person. Booking is an absolute must on weekend nights.I very much like this place for its cosiness and civilised atmosphere (spectators are expected to be quite whilst the band is playing). If you live in the area and are looking to chill out to jazz in an intimate atmosphere, whilst eating, this is THE place to be in. If you are in nice company, you can always go for a walk along the nearby Thames or hit Fulham Road's or Kings Road's clubs/bars for some extra-time boozing and action, afterwards. One thing, though: unfortunately, like many Jazz clubs, this is a smoking venue. However, the place is well air-conditioned."
