"Booked a table on line, which was easy enough. Arrived at the Windmill, the lady logged in to find our booking, which took a little while as the app kept logging her out, and it had ‘the longest ever password’ to log in her words not mine. Took our seats, and ordered our drinks via the app. After about 10 mins, the same lady asked if we were ok, we said we were waiting for drinks, she went back to the bar and retrieved our order and brought our drinks to us. Next round of drinks which again were order via the app arrived promptly. Next we ordered our mains. Medium rare 10oz stake, and a lasagna. Food arrived. Lasagna was very good. Not overpowered with tomato or garlic, very tasty. Hubby’s medium rare stake was overcooked making it a bit dry and lacking taste, but he didn’t want to wait for another to be cooked. Not once did anyone check with us how the meal was. During the meal we ordered another round of drinks, and waited patiently. The lack of drinks made a dry steak even less palatable. We finished the meals (well left half the steak) yet still no drinks. After 25 minutes I went to the bar to cancel the drinks and ask for a refund. After tapping many buttons, hey presto the order was located. There was much confusion over how to do a refund, and at one stage it was suggested that we may have to have cash and the staff member sort it later, but eventually it got sorted as a refund to the card. STILL NO ENQUIRY AS TO HOW THE MEALS WERE!!!!!! As much as I enjoyed the lasagna, I don’t think we will visit again. One member of staff was spending more time having a chat with the locals than checking on things. There were a lot of food orders being collected for delivery, I felt that these were being prioritised above the seated diners. I wish I could say the pub was busy, but it really wasn’t so there was no excuse."

"Visited on a saturday night. Restuarant was more or less empty yet staff seemed to be rushing around. Quickly became evident this was due to takeaway orders The owner who is normally very friendly and recognises us as regular customers seemed less friendly. When asked at the end of the meal if everything was ok I politely stated I was disappointed with my meal but my husbands had been fine and was surprised to be challenged back that it 'looked like ' the curry I 'd ordered so I stated it didn 't taste like any kind of curry. It was chicken in a tomato sauce. I also wasnt the only person in the restuarant that night with the same experience. Therefore we requested and were quickly issued the full bill, paid and left and wont be back. Not only due to the quality of the meal but the surprising attitude displayed when we gave our requested feedback, lack of atmosphere, length of time we waited to have our drinks order taken, having the drinks ordered wrong and length of time to take our order. I had no issue with length of time waiting for freshly prepared food but if I order a certain curry I expect it to taste like that. Wht could have been a simple 'sorry about that ' could have been brushed off as a one off but the way it was handled has finished us off. Shame but I 'd rather drive over to Corstophine for a decent curry. Very sad as I 've always loved the place"

"My friend and I often visit the Old Halfway House as it’s local to us both. Until relatively recently, we have been for the lunchtime menu, and it’s been fairly good. The pub has a nice atmosphere, and it’s clean and tidy. However, the menu has now changed; the lunchtime menu has increased from £6 to £8. Soft drinks have also increased, and a glass of coke is now £4.25, which is simply too much. This last visit, I ordered scampi chips and peas. I could hardly believe my eyes when the server brought my meal. There were 9 small pieces of scampi, a few chips and what I estimated to be 1 spoon of peas. I was really upset about this. The tartar sauce was also underwhelming a tiny bit in the bottom of the dish. The plate actually looked like a child’s meal. Ok, so we all know prices are increasing across all sectors, but whilst pubs need to make a profit, customers also need value for money, and this falls woefully short of what one would expect. Would a few extra peas and chips, and maybe a couple more pieces of scampi really cost that much more for better customer satisfaction? I’ll answer that myself no. When the lady came to collect our plates, we were asked if everything was ok. I mentioned the measly portion size, and she said she’d mention it to the kitchen. We remained in the pub a good 20 minutes, but she never returned, so I don’t know what the kitchen had said. We were going to order dessert, but after seeing that portion size, decided we wouldn’t bother. As mentioned before, we eat out locally once a week, so we have plenty of places with which to compare this to, and it falls way short of the competition. It is sad, but we will be finding somewhere with better value for money in future."

"We visited on Saturday, the night before the marathon. We booked a table. Came in, seen it was busy, so thought this is going to be good. We were seated late which was fine, no problem. We sat next to another couple, (tables were close) we ordered some drinks then our meal. Drinks arrived on our table, weren’t ours, it was the next table. We waited an hour for our starters, tables were coming in and getting served. A table of 6/8 came in and got their starter and mains before us. There was a lot of cross words at the boy in the hair band which I thought he was doing all the work and was very kind if I am honest. Garlic bread came was so dry. They kept going by saying have you eaten? Have you ordered? Have you had mains? Our mains came out an hour later and they didn’t know who it was for. The table next to us actually had to point out it was our food they heard our order. Being a restaurant manager I would like to say… 1. Don’t argue or talk to staff badly, anywhere, but especially not on the floor, I actually think it was maybe husband and wife, it’s not good in front of customers and I know it’s hard and frustrating work, but I don’t even think any of the customers were being rude, the people I heard ask where food was were all being polite. 2. We understand it was busy and every business needs money but don’t take in more people than you should. 3. When you sneeze please do it into your arm and not your hands then don’t wash them, I genuinely couldn’t believe it, hygiene is huge, especially in catering. I’m genuinely shocked I still ate my food after the person touched my plate later on. as they didn’t go anywhere near a sink or a sanitizer. Our mains were lovely. I hope the famous athlete who was in the restaurant at the same time got his food on time and amazing service. But, I do genuinely believe on a normal busy night this restaurant would be fine, just a few tweaks needed. 2 stars lost due to my hygiene comment and how they were openly arguing with one another."

"I love a restaurant meal you can not reproduce in a house kitchen, provided that your house is not equipped with a wood burning smoker. At the time we order was cape malay curry fish from the small bite menu. chops of fish, crushed and fried and served in a delicious curry sauce that had the sweet of dried fruits as well as some acidic tang. the seasoned on the menu were curcuma and coriander, but I think I also tasted kumin. the strange thing was that this dish was served cold. if I were trying to get this back home, I would serve it warm. all our BBQ elements arrived simultaneously. I think I would have preferred a slower progress of tapas-style service, with crooked who arrive as they are ready. from the sommees or spears my companion reported his curry lamb as tasty, beautiful on the outside and delicate on the inside. I had the spit consisting of three head on besties that were skinned on a bed rucola and desecrated and served. nizzaer blackening rub added a bitter contrast to sweet meat, but the taste of prawn. did not flood our larger dishes were spiced chicken wings and pork. the pork ribs had fallen so tenderly from the bone that they could easily be eaten with a knife and fork. I loved the marinade that was only subtle sweet and sour, not as in her face american bbq saucen. chicken wings were also great. very thin skin with subcutaneous fat, although grilled instead of deep fried. meat is still succulent, so every temperature they use to achieve both large skin and meat is perfect. the spicy dry rubbing was not based on sweet for aroma.Sides were also amazing. first we thought the roasted potato had been boiled with meat drops because they were so tasteful. apparently they were steamed, oiled and finished in a smoker. perfect texture with crispy outside and fluffy interiors. I thought the seasonal greens of the roast brokkoli was also amazing. they were also steamed, oiled and finished in a smoker. exceptionally aromatic.br/> we have taken to end a few foods after home that they have no problems packing in a collection container. the house red was pleasant and affordable at £23 a bottle. server were efficient and knowledgeable about eating. I want to try back and more of the menu. in the month juli 2019 offers hammer and tongs 50% discount on eating. with the discount we paid £50 for our meal including service, but would have been happy to pay the full price. the only dish I wouldn't order again is the cold fish curry starter."
