"“The Peckham Spring” The heading will become apparent later in this review. On the 22nd September, we had a table booked for 4, it was both couples weeding anniversary’s. We arrived 20mins early to have a drink in the bar. This was the point when we should of left. Ordering 4 drinks from exceptional young an inexperienced staff was a challenge. The drinks took ages to be made (at this point there was only 2 other guests in there). 3 cocktails and a beer, all of the cocktails were spilt by the waitress on serving and were not made correctly. At the table, We ordered wine and still water (bottled). This is where the heading for this review arrives from. This restaurant, (I use that terminology loosely), severs “tap water” in mineral water bottles and chargers £5.00 for it. (Del Boy must be running this joint)! We have been fortunate to have traveled far and wide in this country and abroad and never come across this deceitful act which is inessential fraud and theft. You may ask why do we “assume “ this?, well firstly Ely water has a distinct taste and secondly the bottle was open prior to arriving at the table and they had filled it right to the top! Shame on you Poets House. So on to the food, 4 starters, all below average. 4 mains, that all being sirloin steaks. My “plate of food” was probably the absolute worst dish I have ever had presented in front of me. A side salad straight out of a bag, un washed or dressed, a cold mushroom which wasn’t seasoned or warm, a steak which hadn’t been seared or cooked correctly to medium rare and was completely un edible and wouldn’t cut with a steak knife. This was accompanied with a bucket of chips which was dripping in oil. The only positive part to this review is that the waiter who served us is the only asset this establishment has. I voiced all of this to the said gentleman on the evening, and what was disheartening was that he total agreed with everything we mentioned. The owners, the management and the (cook) (as they don’t have a chef), need to be educated by their waiter if they have any chance of this establishment improving. In conclusion to this review, I strongly advise anyone looking for a decent plate of food to avoid booking the Poets House,Ely."

"Horrible. All desserts are pre made and stuck in a big oven for 5-10 minutes to warm up before serving (my partner took a video, which I will upload) Thought we would stop here for some dessert. Ordered an Oreo milkshake, Oreo waffles and churros, we got the milkshake after around 10 minutes which my partner said was okay but nothing special, waited around 20ish minutes for the other two items, had one bite out the churros which was solid like a brick and had no flavour at all, absolute disgusting I wouldn’t feed it to my dog. My partner had one bite of his waffles and it just broke up and was soggy as anything, we returned the food back and spoke to the guy quietly to tell him we wasn’t happy and would like a refund to which he got a lady to come and she took the bag away with the remaining food. The lady come back and told us she will refund for the churros and could see where we was coming from, she said she wasn’t refunding for the waffles as apparently my partner had ate half. My partner had to take the box and ask at least 6 customers waiting for their desserts if it looked like half he had ate which they all agreed with us that it was one bite. The lady finally agreed to refund us for the waffles also but told us we had to wait until closing time. Definitely won’t be back and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone."

"When I moved to London eight years ago it wasn’t easy to find good, authentic Neapolitan pizza. Then, four or five years ago, one name began popping up in conversations with fellow Italian expats: Franco Manca. Today Franco Manca is one of my favourite pizzerias in London. Living ten minutes’ walk from the original Brixton restaurant (they now have ten branches in the city) means we eat there regularly. We know when to go to avoid queues and what to order. Recently I had the pleasure to eat at the new Franco Manca restaurant in East Dulwich for a soft launch ahead of today’s opening. It was my first experience in a “real” Franco Manca restaurant (the other two I tried before are in a market – Brixton – and in a shopping centre – Stratford) and I liked the modern and warm interiors. I tried one of the starters (a dish from the “small bites” menu): Burrata Almonds, Wild Pig Prosciutto. It was very good. For the pizza I tasted a Mozzarella, Tomato, Aubergines, Pancetta, Watercress. I asked the waitress to have it without watercress and added Parmigiano Reggiano shavings instead. Again very good quality of dough and ingredients. Franco Manca are famous for their sourdough pizza dough, which makes a highly digestible pizza and it’s true! I barely eat any bread nowadays and I was worried about feeling bloated after last night’s pizza, but I felt great afterwards. They use a soft wheat flour that at the end of the long fermentation process exhausts its starch content, so the result is a digestible product. After the pizza we treated ourselves to dessert: a sticky and light Neapolitan Caprese Cake made with almond flour and served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream."
