"We stayed in Kassel for the Documenta It is close to the Glas-Pavillons an der Kurt-Schumacher-Straße where (auf deutsch) die libanesisch-niederländische Künstlerin Mounira Al Solh, in Beirut geboren, präsentiert auf der documenta unter dem Titel „I Strongly Believe in Our Right to...be Frivolous“ eine Serie von Porträts, die in der Begegnung mit Migrant_innen aus dem Nahen Osten und Nordafrika in Kassel und Athen (und anderen Städten) entstanden ist. The painted portraits and the stories of these people are impressive. So after the exhibition we walked into Abessina. I first had a refreshing Jever Beer (Friesisch herbal beer from Jever, Ost Friesland. Then a wonderful plate at a very reasonable price. Begie Behamli (Laktose -und Glutenfrei) Gekochte Lammwürfel und Hamli Grünkohl nach eritreische Art serviert mit Spinat, Zwiebeln, Knoblauch und einer speziellen eritreischen/äthiopischen Gewürzmischung Fried Lamb Cubes with Hamli green kale „Eritrean Style“ served with spinach, onions garlic, and special spices from Eritrea/Ethiopia. My partner the very tasteful Veg one.A very foodie experience. So, if yo go to the Documenta, don't eat at the festival restaurants, but try this. You won't be dissapointed."

The food as always is amazing but despite that the restaurant was not full we had to wait for.more than one hour to get the food. The service is definitely bad but the food is worthy.

We shared a sort of curry platter with a range of vegetable dishes such as lentils or kale. This was accompanied by a sort of wettish chappati. The food was edible but not interesting! I felt it was worthy rather than tasty.

We were a group of at our table and ordered platters. Worked out at about euros a head for food, and there was more than enough. Very tasty, authentic Ethiopian food. Service was a bit hit and miss, but I think they were...caught out by the size of our group (about in total).

Abessina is run by a very friendly Eritrean family. The food is excellent and they offer both meat and vegan options. The only complaint is that sometimes the service can be a bit slow and things are forgotten; however, they are so nice and the...food so good that it doesn't matter. Just be patient. Highly recommend it and a reservation may be necessary, depending on the day and time. View menu

I've never tried African food and I had curiosity so when I discovered this restaurant I had no doubt. It is a small and cozy local with African decoration. The service was very very slow but the staff was really nice and attentive. We had hummus and a big mix-dish with lamb, chicken and beef in soft and spicy sauces and some lentils and vegetables. The food is good but it seemed to me a little bit expensive.

I chose the place since I love Ethiopian food and the google reviews were great. In fact I was disappointed. The food was OK and there was nothing wrong with it apart from the fact that they served it cold and barely heated it up....The food also lacked the oomph that I usually expect from this cuisine. It’s an ok place if ur hungry and happen to be passing by and need a cheap eat, but I wouldn’t bother going out of my way for it or planning a special occasion there.

We were lucky to have made a reservation for this Saturday night, otherwise we would not have eaten here. We were a company of two sisters, one brother and their three partners. It was very busy in the restaurant indicating its popularity. We choose a...very nice mixed set of dishes for four persons, whilst two others choose the mixed dish for vegans. Initially I thought that it would not be enough for four, but it was enough. We did finish all plates though. It is an Ethiopian restaurant. View menu

I went to Abessina last week with my colleagues, expecting to try out some nice African food, but was completely let down. To begin with, we ordered Sambusa, which I found overpriced at Euro 6 for a plate of 3 small Sambusas, with an ordinary potato filling. However, the Humus, which was our next order, was quite nice. The main meal which was an assorted platter of chicken, lamb and vegetarian dishes along with bread and rice, was not too appetising. All the dishes were extremely oily and tasted very ordinary. In all I paid Euro 25 for this meal, including 2 beers, which I think is overpriced as compared to other restaurants in Kassel.

I do not know why many people have said that this restaurant is expensive. In our travels through North and South Germany in December this is the cheapest and best value that we experienced. We have never previously tasted this type of cuisine but...every dish was delicious. I especially recommend the okra dish, but, for the mixed dishes presented are excellent. They have an African beer available too, and many German beers. The only problem is that they said they had no white wine for my wife, but they clearly did not have any knowledge of wine and I found many bottles of German sparkling wine on their shelves. They gave us one for about half price. Although BYO is unknown in Germany, I am...
