"We had a late lunch/early dinner here on Christmas Eve to celebrate my birthday. The menu on offer was the Christmas menu, however, there were plenty of things to choose from. A slight niggle for me is when there are set menus but some courses require a supplement and it felt like there were quite a lot of them to keep the headline price down. That said, we did very much enjoy our meals. The food was well cooked and tasty and the inclusion of a glass of fizz, tea or coffee afterwards and a mince pie were a nice touch; as were the Christmas hats. Given that the restaurant was full, the service was very good and attentive. Our waiter; a Lithuanian guy whose name we didn't get was warm and friendly and he is a real credit to the restaurant. It's not the cheapest place in town, but it's a lovely setting with great food which I actually think makes it good value for what you get."

Lovely food from the Christmas menu. Restaurant was busy but it didn't feel overly crowded or rushed which was nice for this time of year. Very good service. Nice bar to sit in prior to meal

A lovely place for a special birthday, decent food which was well presented. Locally sourced ingredients and an extensive cellar of wine... apx £75 a head including a couple of glasses of wine. Visit slightly marred by absolutely foul(as in 100% his mother would be ashamed) language from adjacent table hey ho. In all a lovely evening View menu

Wonderful Sunday Lunch for Grandsons Birthday. Everything was perfect the location in a Historic Building dating from 1239 the Blackfriars Priory. The ambience, the carved wooden dining chairs, the huge wooden tables along with the professionalism of the staff at all levels made the day. The food was piping hot at table, and as we eat with our eyes firstly, the presentation made us all want to pause the conversation and enjoy. All the staff on the day made a wonderful dining experience we will be back for more of the same. Alan R.

blackfriars restaurant claims to be "time-respected, traditional British and the oldest dining room in Britain." it is safe old: frankly, it could do with a good makeover. after the assembly of a floor-high pubs, with bewitches on the deck and tatty wood furniture, he zigzags the local box with a laminated map of his suppliers on each table. but good ingredients are worthless without great cooking and unfortunately this is where this “historical” food is established. I took a friend who passes through a particularly painful divorce. the poor chap looked like he hadn't eaten any real food since weeks, so he chose the pressed northumberland ochsenzunge with maisichons, followed by wild mushroo...

"The place seems unprofessionally run. The staff all look like they could do with a bath. No overalls are worn and their clothes are all of the type that many would wear to lounge around the house in . Several have longer hair and beards but don’t wear any kitchen p.p.e. The decor is shabby and I wondered what kind of hygiene rating they would have. Although not busy, the staff seemed to be disorganised, falling over eachother and lacking in training. They seemed to handle the food in an inexperienced, clumsy fashion. The only tool I saw being used was a pizza peel for taking the pizza in and out of the oven. On all other occasions the food was handled. I didn’t notice any hand washing or alcohol gel in evidence. The menu is quite limited and uninspiring. 2 of the 6 pizza choices include chicken which Italians would argue is definite no no! All pizzas are reheated to order which eliminates the possibility of customisation. I don’t believe the restaurant would stand out in many European countries, as pizza in general is of a much higher standard than that in the UK. In spite of the above, The basic pizza is excellent in taste (even though it is all re-heated). And for this reason it is worth a visit. Compared to other uk pizza restaurants which are typically serving absolute garbage, the food is way out in front. If you can tolerate the negatives I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with the pizza. However with a bit of effort, this place could be transformed into something truly amazing."
