"This inexpensive, neighborhood restaurant/pub is just a couple of blocks away from an area with many restaurants that have higher prices and less exciting food. We were drawn into the place when we walked by as an older couple were walking out with a dog on a leash. Inside, nearly every table was filled with families or groups of friends who seemed to be on a first name basis with the staff. A super friendly waitress kept circulating with a carrier holding traditional, narrow glasses of beer which she dropped off for patrons as needed. We were too late to order pork chops; they had sold out earlier. So, I ordered a steak and my companion ordered pork cutlets. Both dishes were served with an excellent green salad lightly dressed with a delightful homemade vinaigrette. The main dishes included incredibly tasty caramelized onions and the best tasting potatoes I've ever had. I've cut way back on carbs and had only planned to have a taste of the huge pile of potatoes, but I ended up eating all of them because they were so wonderful. My steak, although a bit chewy, was cooked perfectly and tasted great.I travel frequently and I'm always on the lookout for good, simple, local food. This place is the real deal. I'm pretty sure we were the only people in the restaurant who were not from the neighborhood. For business travelers, it's within a short walk of Koelnmesse and the Hotel Dorint. I'll certainly be back again, perhaps this evening."

Stumbled across this place as the one we wanted to go to was closed, lucky for us as the place was delicious! Pepper schnitzel and Hunters (?) Schnitzel washed down with a few Kolsch all for under €25...perfect!

This is a real gem, full of locals. The beer is great and the steaks were wonderful. Best pepper sauce I've had in a long time, looking forward to getting back soon. The service was very well done, attentive but not interfering. Highly recommended.

I came in alone on a Friday night, i speak no English, but was given a warm welcome. I was given a table quickly, the man helping me was i assume the owner, he was so sweet and joked with me about what beer to drink. It was busy with locals but everyone was so nice, my nerves settled quickly. The food came in a timely manner as well as a fresh beer. I ordered the pork medallions with hollandaise sauce, peas, carrots, and fried potatoes... It was fantastic! A great experience!

second visit in the house zeyen and again eat good. it is on the generally quieter and more intimate side of the city and visited mainly by local, but it is worth finding the effort. this visit was an early Saturday night, it was quiet and we got in. table without booking. we had both schinitzel, cordon bleu and naturel, both were great. it is worth asking for bratkartoffeln instead of chips. beside salads also very tasty. nice celiac, nice staff, cheap prices. will come back!

Visited as a family with two teenage boys. We decided to try here as an alternative to the more obvious choices and we're so glad we did! Hadn't booked but, even though it was pretty busy, they squeezed us in. Mostly locals and the staff only speak a little English but with my little bit of German we got on ok.We all had schnitzels, my cordon bleu (filled with ham and cheese) was fab! The Bratkartoffeln are excellent. Lots of nice Kölsch to wash it all down! Really liked the atmosphere - the people were really nice. Very reasonably priced too!Would definitely consider a return visit!

We were looking for a simple but decent German-style meal on a Saturday evening in Deutz. Walked past the highly rated (on TA) Lommerzheim around the corner, which appeared to be more of a bar than a tavern at first glance: loud music, people loitering outside. Decided to try Haus Zeyen, which turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. The hosts were very friendly, the food was excellent, the atmosphere gemütlich.I often cringe a little when people overuse the word 'local' or suggest this is where you get to 'mingle' with the 'real locals' (whatever that may be) - but if that's what you're after, this is probably where you should go.

We tried to go to a restaurant nearby recommended in Tripadvisor (Lommerzheim) but it was closed (! not according to the internet though - oh well!) We found Haus Zeyen nearby instead - it's pub style and the experience was really like going to an unrenovated (c. late 60's / early 70's) 'local' pub in Australia (or England, for that matter), but with everyone speaking German. The people were really friendly and unlike most of our other encounters with locals in Germany, most people there didn't speak English (though there was one woman who did speak it very well, she didn't press it when we all decided to try and manage with my son's german. They were really encouraging there and my son did...

haus zeyen is a local restaurant pub from the beaten stretch, visited by the natives and as such it has a fabulous warm, friendly and humming atmosphere over it. 35 years ago it was a bus station, but since then. it is a lively restaurant bar that serves fabulous local cuisine and the sion colsch beer stands directly from a keg on a platform on the curved bar. there are tables, but since I have eaten alone and it has been fully booked, I sat and ate at the bar, which was nice in the did when I filled the friendly merciful constantly the small 0.2L bierglasses and loaded them into the bearer they use to take them in quantity on the tables. I had to begin to eat the wobble soup, which was hot...
