"There are not many dining options in Spitz and this little place south of the rotary and parallel to the Danube River is the best we found. There is ample parking and both indoor and outdoor seating - choose outdoor if you can. Indoor is "cute" but a bit much; outdoor is casual with nicely carved wooden picnic style tables and benches and a nice view of the river (albeit right on the road so some road noise). The French fries are excellent - crispy not greasy and fresh. The pork weiner schnitzel could feed two people easily and again is very fresh, not greasy, not too heavy on the breading, and delicious with the currant sauce as a dip. You can order the salad without ("ona") dressing and without the "mixed salads" that are so prevalent, and they will (albeit with bewilderment by our server but she acquiesced just the same) bring you a very fresh, hearty, and HEALTHY green salad with tasty raw vegetables that is very hard to find in Austria. The zwiegelt rot wein was surprisingly very good. Highly recommend!"

We had very slow service at the non-smoking side. The food is good, and it is definitely a bonus that there is a non-smoking area!

Good traditional food. But the best marillenknöndl I have ever tasted. WOW! Must taste it here in the season of apricots. Other dishes are very traditional and quite tasty. Just a bit old fashioned.

our guide brought us here on our journey from sankt johann to wien. it is a small river-level totro at the donau. picturesque ruins on the hill behind it. it is also on the most important Danube cycle route and therefore very popular. the full capacity utilisation was managed with an exception effectiv. we all ordered a special dish and got something quite different and quite hard. we had two German native speakers in the party, so we are pretty clear about it

over the road from the donau with inside and outside seat. the menu is somewhat limited and typical beer garden/sub tea. sausages, hamburger, carving etc. the salates are also available. the star of the midday meal were the sausages that were just excellent (and were wrapped in...bacon!). the accompanying riders were quite average. beer was very nice, but only one pilsner was available. I'm sure they're worth a stop when they're going through the Wachau Valley.

Driving along the Danube in the Wachau Valley we happened upon this little place where we stopped for dinner. We sat outside and enjoyed tall, cold beers and delicious food - sheep's cheese with hearty fresh dark bread, cold, thinly sliced pork on fresh dark bread with horseradish mustard, cheese, pickles and tomatoes, and a hot tender pork dinner with potato dumplings. Food, service and atmosphere were great and prices were very moderate. Definitely worth a visit!

The place is a typical Austrian beer garden restaurant. We were a family of 4 adults. The food was nice, large portions and cheap. The only thing that killed me was we ordered starters, maincourses, desserts and 4 glasses of tap water !!! We were...charged for each medium size glass E0.90!, they called it stillwasser 1/4 (a bottle of water 500ml in the street cost us half of that). We have visited Austria twice a year for the past 8 years and this is the first and only time that we were charged for tap water. I am sorry I cannot understand their logic

we stopped on a wet day for lunch. many parking spaces and bicycle parking spaces outside this restaurant and there are many tables also inside and outside. two negative items on this site were l 347 of 20.12.2013, p. 1). no English menu and 2. the keeping of the waitress, which was abrupt and rude and completely cut off to explain the elements on the menu. positiw was that eating was very good and cheap and the apricosenknödel a speciality of the region when the apricoses are in the season) were excellent. a good place to stop on the bike route, but best if you speak German

We were looking for a Schnitzel by the Danube experience and came across Spitzerl. Order was taken at the table for four Schnitzels and chips, two beers, a coke and water. Drinks came out promptly and meals followed about 10 minutes later. The Schnitzels were...dinner plate size, sitting on a dinner plate of fries. A very generous meal with only two out four being eaten completely and not from want of trying. Our outside table was at street level across the road from the Danube, so not exactly river views more beside the river. Really well cooked Schnitzel, very nice beer all alongside the Danube.

"First, a bit of backstory: my wife and I were hiking (on our first ever visit to the Wachau) from Weissenkirchen towards Spitz through the vineyards and forest; not a tough walk but as it happened, very hot, sunny and tiring. After an hour or...so I started feeling strangely dizzy perhaps a consequence of another long hot hike the day before and decided to cut the walk short by heading down to Wosendorf. By the time we reached the village I could hardly stand without reeling, and we asked a passing couple if they knew of a cafe or bar nearby. They simply pointed out that we were right next to a very good restaurant (which we hadn’t noticed). So we went in, mainly in search of rest and some kind of sustenance, liquid and solid. We had not expected to spend 115 euros for a bite to eat on our walk, but we never regretted our visit to the Hofmeisterei Hirtzberger for one minute. Notwithstanding our sweaty hiking attire, sticks and rucksacks we were at once made welcome in the shady garden terrace by the very efficient and friendly staff, and soon found ourselves enjoying a superb lunch that relaxed and rehydrated me and helped us forget about my unfortunate brief crisis. I started with a delicious white tomato soup; given the heat, I expected something gazpacho like but it was warm and no less refreshing for all that. We then both went for a venison dish cooked in two different ways: one roasted to perfection with a lovely accompaniment of shiitake mushroom, pearl barley and peach, the other a kind of mini casserole as a side bowl. Wow! So rich! Then we shared a dark chocolate, raspberry and coconut dessert which made for a perfect finish. Two glasses of very superior Gruner Veltliner, an espresso, a couple of soft drinks and some lovely breads before the meal a really fine summer lunch which revived me completely under the circumstances but which I’d have been exceptionally pleased with anyway. The garden is by a main ish road though not so you’d notice much. This is not a place for cheap eats, but for very fine food and wine it is wholly reasonable. We agreed we may never have had a finer venison main, and my soup was special. Wholly recommended, even though it doesn’t seem to appear in the local tourist leaflets. Is that because it’s not in one of the more touristy villages? Or because (despite using great local produce) it’s a little ‘adventurous’? Who cares? Check it out if you can..."
