We choose to find the clearer air away from Madrid city and took a train ride from Atocha to Cercedilla. This bar is on the approach to the upper town and does excellent tapas and a great menu on a Sunday when the whole world comes here! Get there for 1.30 pm to be sure of a table and then watch the local families having fun!

We called in here for tapas early on a Saturday evening. Our Spanish is poor but the friendly waiters called on a young woman to translate for us. We had a couple of drinks with free tapas; the pork scratching was delicious. We then had dinner of house mushrooms (gorgeous), patatas bravas, salad and the local beef cooked rare. It was rustic but really well cooked. We washed it down with a great Rioja and were given chipitos to finish off the meal. Really good value at 40euros. The bar has a really good atmosphere and is popular with a crowd of friendly locals of all ages. We would definitely return.

We may have ordered the items on the menu that simply are not their forte, but the food was awful like high school cafeteria awful. I am sure that the soup came from a box, and the french fries and potatoes were definitely previously frozen from a bag. The salad was served with a white under ripened tomato when there were plenty of ripe tomatoes at the grocery store two minutes away (not to mention other fresh vegetables that the restaurant could easily access and simply cook to improve their offerings).
