"Firstly, the food was satisfactory, however the service was extremely poor. It is evident that there are issues with how the restaurant is being operated. It took over an hour to receive 3 starters and almost 2 and a half hours to get our main dishes. The table next to us left after waiting nearly 2 hours for their starters, and another table left after being informed that the kitchen had run out of vegetables 90 minutes after placing their order. We observed numerous takeout orders being prioritized over in-house customers. Despite ordering naans when we first placed our order, they were unavailable when our food was served. We were disappointed by the lack of communication and organization from the staff. The manager attempted to blame the new staff member and then the chef for the issues we encountered. Although we were offered complimentary drinks, we declined as we were already fed up with the poor service. We arrived at 7pm and left at 9:45pm feeling unimpressed. The restaurant must decide whether to prioritize their dine-in customers or takeout orders, as they are currently unable to handle both effectively. It is unfortunate that our past positive experiences at this restaurant have been overshadowed by this recent visit."

The staff were welcoming, warm and efficient. I was out with 3 members of the family and all the dishes we chose were delicious. I will certainly go again soon.

Lovely to see Memories back. Have been a regular diner here in past and standards maintained. Great selection on menu with some new dishes as well as the classics. The Tarka Dal remains a fabulous peppery delight. View menu

Memories of Bengal is of the best Indian restaurants in South Oxfordshire. So pleased it’s reopened! Its dishes are good value and delicious you can’t go wrong with any of them. And the service is great. I went last week and had prawn xacuti, and coconut rice, which I had never tried before but was superb. I’ve had Indian meals all over the UK, including Michelin starred restaurants, and been going to Memories of Bengal for ten years. It’s up there with the best. I always try something different every time and have never had a bad meal there. Times are tough for independent restaurants, so support them if you can. Welcome back Memories!

Well it was a special birthday and the only way to really celebrate it was to have a good curry. If you like really refined and well cooked Indian cuisine, then the Memories of Bengal in Cholsey is the place to come to. After a period of dormancy last year it has been reacquired by a small group of enthusiastic partners determined to make the business work. This is reflected in the excellence of the food as the chef is one of the new owners, determined to give his customers a real treat. So the evening was perfect with excellent food and this new incarnation of The Memories of Bengal arguably produces the best Indian food in the Wallingford area. View menu

I went to this restaurant with a group of friends for a sit-down meal. While the food was decent (tasty but not very memorable), the experience was greatly soured by the poor service and long wait for our food. We received our drinks and poppadoms with chutneys almost immediately after sitting down, but then had to wait over an hour for our meals. We had to remind the staff twice, as there was no communication or apology from them. It seemed that the service had come to a halt, as no food was being brought out for about 45 minutes to anyone in the dining room. Interestingly, some takeaway orders were being fulfilled during this time, even though we arrived shortly after the restaurant opened...

Absolutely delighted that Memories of Bengal has reopened in Cholsey. It’s been much missed in the village whilst it was closed. The food as always is excellent. We started with a couple of Indian restaurant classics onion bhaji vegetable samosas. Bhaji’s crisp and tasty and wonderfully spiced. Samosa’s packed with deliciousness yum! For our mains, I had the Mirchi Chicken Tikka with keema naan, my wife had the Prawn Xacuti dish with coconut rice, and we had a side of another classic, a vegetable curry. It was fantastic. I’ve never found the Mirchi Tikka on any other Indian restaurant menu and it’s by far my favourite dish of all time. Essentially a really spicy hot chicken tikka served on t...

"My wife and I ate here on a Sunday night, and were really impressed with what we found. It is a wine bar, which serves a reasonably extensive snack menu. Think of it like a French tapas kind of idea, with a number of small plates on offer to eat whilst sampling the many wines, rather than a traditional restaurant serving starters and mains. We ate the wild garlic pesto tartiflette, which was delicious, and also had a charcuterie board, with generous portions of iberico ham, parma ham and cooked ham, together with bread and chutney, which was equally delicious. The other plate we ordered was a prawn and avocado salad in a balsamic vinegar dressing. This too was really tasty and was a generous size. It being a wine bar, there are numerous wines on offer, but what we chose to do was the wine flight, where you each get three small glasses, each of a different wine. I chose the Bordeaux flight and my wife chose the Rioja flight. For about £15 each, we thought it was good value and enabled us to try six different wines for a reasonable price, all of which complemented the food perfectly. There are also both white and sparkling flights available, as well as a good wine list, most of which were very reasonably priced. The restaurant/bar itself is relatively small, and reminded me of a cosy ski lodge, with wood panels on the wall and nice bench seats. The atmosphere was very nice, and the service was excellent. All in all, it was a lovely evening and we really enjoyed our visit and would have no hesitation returning if we are ever in the area again."
