"Regardless of how good the food is, they treat their staff abysmally. Just know that when you leave a tip, it's probably funding the owners' lavish holidays. I worked at Cafe Source, the same owners as Niven's, and I worked hard. Cash tips were collected at the till, and all staff were to put tips in a jar to be divvied up. However, the owners kept the hardworking staff's tips, tossing us or every fortnight. We were definitely pulling in more than that. When I put in my notice and went back to collect my last two weeks of tips, owner Paul fobbed me off, and I never did get what I was owed. I guess it's no surprise, with how rude he could be to staff. Sure, they had a nice staff Christmas party every year, but minimum wage workers need their tips. They also never paid me holiday pay, which I didn't find out was a legal requirement until it was too late to submit a complaint. Really awful way to treat loyal staff!"

Got the pan roast lamb and it was amazing. My girlfriend got the hake and it was beautifully cooked. The house beer washed it all down well. The staff ontop of it all were really lovely, friendly and attentive.

I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone in the area. The venue is lovely and the food is delicious with a variety of flavors. It's not a large space, so I suggest making a reservation. The menu offers a diverse selection from appetizers to desserts, all made with interesting ingredients. Don't miss out on this gem of a restaurant.

My third visit to Nivens and, as with both other occasions, I chose the Pithivier for the main course without pages, as in the past the plate was large and came with potato mash. The Pithivier is now lamb and haggis, very tasty. It is served with a stew of beans, but the stew is just a small spoon of beans and more of a yarn. So a bit misleading and £12 was expensive for the dish, compared to other items on the menu I missed the potato. Panacotta Dessert pleasant but over set. Service well and we got a free glass of wine after we were asked to move table. In summary, food still big, but new menu could be with tweaking.

A relatively new establishment from the creators of Cafe Source, this restaurant is a great spot for drinks and dinner in the early evening, especially on a rare sunny evening in July. The space is modern and clean with entrances at both ends, plenty of glass, and outdoor seating. The service was quick and attentive, with a unique selection of draft beers such as a peach weissbier and a tart berry and hibiscus concoction in a pale pink color. The menu offers interesting options including vegetarian dishes. The smoked salmon with beetroot granita was visually appealing, while the hanger steak was cooked perfectly and accompanied by a standout polenta chip. The fries I ordered on the side were...

Tried a few dishes from the menu, the hot smoked salmon and crab, the crispy cauliflower, the lamb and the pan fried coley. It was a bit of a mixed bag to be honest the cauliflower and lamb dishes were really nice but on ordering a side of mixed greens to go with the lamb it turned out that it already came with the greens in the dish so it was a bit of a waste. The salmon and crab starter was good but there was what seemed like cubes of potato mixed in with it that isn't mentioned in the description which made it a lot heavier than what I was expecting. The pan fried coley and mussels came in a nice sauce but the skin wasn't crispy on the fish and it was way over seasoned and far too salty t...
