"Strange- I am trying to review Carestiato as a refugio but it will only allow me to as a restaurant. Oh well. We stayed here along the AV1. The place is very charming and the staff friendly. We stayed in room #6 and it had four bunk beds. The room was very small. One of us had to keep our pack outside the room because there was no space. The showers were very nice here and the bathrooms spacious. The dinner here was excellent. We started with a massive plate of ravioli with spinach. These were so good my mouth waters today just thinking of them. It was a nice large plate for each of us too which was good because we were hungry hikers. The second course was chicken, roasted potatoes, and peas. This was also amazingly good. The potatoes in particular were to die for. Yum. One of our best meals on the AV1 for sure. They also had really good bread (may have been made there) which was excellent for dipping in all the tasty olive oil. A nice 1/2 liter of house wine and we were ready for bed. The breakfast in the morning was pretty grim. The coffee was bad. We really could not even drink it. We stopped about an hour down the hill at Paso Duran and ordered macchiatos to get our kick start. Yum."

Exceptionally rude service from some staff. Poor dinner. Bad breakfast. Good lunch (order the casunzei).

Lovely rifugio in a gorgeous setting. Nice cosy rooms with four bunks instead of huge dorms. Bathrooms like you have at home. One of the best dinners on the trail- lasagne as a starter, the yummiest chicken with potatoes and peas and pannacotta (although Rifugio Citte Di Fiume has the best pannacotta) And a really good breakfast spread.

Super consigliato e torneremo sicuramente.

This was a nice place to arrive after a long hot trek great view, nice outdoor seating area, decent bathrooms (though with only 2 of these, queues can develop), and efficient service at dinner. The only downside was the dormitory, which was far too small for 2 bunks and 4 people, made even worse my roommates' numerous gadgets and cables. Also, I had to request a ladder to reach my top bunk this took up the remaining space between the bunks. Suggestion: build some fixed vertical ladders to save space and improve access to top bunks.

We stayed here one night on AV1. The staff were incredibly welcoming and despite it not being particularly cold, they lit the wood burning stove in the evening for dinner and again for breakfast so it felt extra cosy. We had half board; dinner was excellent and huge portions (minestrone, goulash, pasta etc). Breakfast was good too muesli and bread with ham and cheese etc. The rooms were clean and modern, the beds were comfortable and we had a great night sleep. The best thing though was the staff. I left my phone charger behind. When I realised, I thought I would have to walk all the way back up, but I called first to check and without hesitation, the owner made a special trip down to Passo...
