"On a recent leisure visit to Peterhead I dropped into the Symposium Coffee House. The good: lovely staff and they serve large flat whites. Almost no other cafe does this. An eight ounce flat white might be the tradition, but it is too small. The crispy bacon bagel was very nice. The not so good: I didn’t enjoy the coffee. I don’t know which blend is being used, but you could do better. The coffee had 6 shots in a 16oz mug. I wonder what size the shot is? At home I use 18g of coffee to 36g of water then top up the rest with steamed full fat milk in a 12oz cup. There was too much water to too little milk, and the milk was semi skimmed. Full fat really is a must to make a decent coffee. I needed four sachets of sugar to make it palatable. Although honey for pancakes was on the menu, none was available. I wondered if the coffee making was poor at this branch so I nipped along toFraserburgh for a comparison. The staff were lovely again, but the coffee wasn’t. It was the same quality as the Peterhead branch. I have come to the conclusion that getting a decent coffee in Peterhead is probably a difficult thing, but have noticed in the other reviews that people really rate the coffee. My first decent flat white was back in Costa Coffee in Aberdeen, where they use full fat milk and a decent blend, with a decent ratio of milk to water."

Had never been here before but since we were in the area we decided to give it a try, both had cappuccino and shared a large pancake and both were excellent!! Will definitely visit again when in Peterhead. Staff were lovely and friendly too. Great place for a coffee stop :

The staff at this restaurant were fantastic, but unfortunately, the food quality was disappointing. The Canadian pancakes were cold, the streaky bacon was undercooked, and the crispy bacon bagel was not crispy at all. The bacon had a strange smell. The cappuccinos were more like milky coffee with no froth. Paying £20 for inedible food was not worth it, so we sadly won't be coming back. View menu

Had a really marvellous 3 course meal last night. Minimalistic Menu which saves lengthy decisions, and it was a no-brainer for me. Cullen Skink, Haddock Bruschetta, Chicken Goujons, and a cheesecake to share. The meal was very cheap too, as it was in-line with the current deals going on around Covid. All tables were well spaced and all health and hygiene regulations were adhered to. Excellent service, and great tasting food. Thank You

I recently dined at this restaurant with my husband for lunch, and unfortunately, our experience was greatly affected by the rude behavior of the woman working at the till. It appeared as though she may have been on drugs, as she was dropping money and spilling our coffee. Additionally, our sandwiches were poorly presented. Despite not knowing the woman's name, she had blonde hair tied up in a bun and was wearing glasses. We were not impressed with the service and won't be returning to this establishment.

Immediately following my order being taken and being told to sit at a table, that particular member of staff promptly left the premises. Subsequently. it was clear that staff training was being undertaken (one on one) but I sensed that all was not well. Customers came and went and it took over half an hour for my order to arrive. I was told that they thought I was with some other customers??!!? . Although apologies were made and I was seated at a table directly in front of the counter throughout, I was not impressed with the experience. View menu

My Husband and I placed an order with the click and collect. The coffee was great however when we got it home we found out that the food we ordered was wrong. I specifically asked for no cheese on my chilli chicken bagel, it did say no cheese on the recipt. Which is why I didn't check it in the car. Opened it up to find it did have cheese on it and had to try and pick it all off before eating the bagel. Everything else was fab just a shame about the mistake as it ruined the bagel for me as I couldn't get all the cheese out. Still an awesome place to grab a coffee or hot chocolate.

Four of us went to Ellon Symposium based on hearing a lot of positive reviews, but unfortunately, I cannot agree with them. I ordered a triple deck sandwich, but the bread (a bloomer) was either stale or had the consistency of gluten-free bread, making it inedible in my opinion. I only ended up eating the contents of the sandwich, which were actually quite tasty. Furthermore, the homemade coleslaw was fizzy. My granddaughter ordered pancakes with maple syrup, but the waitress had completely forgotten about it and only brought it out when we were almost done with our meal and only after we reminded her. Unfortunately, the pancakes were also inedible - they were hard and stale. Even though my...

"Sunday, 3rd September 2023 – 19:00 Meal: Wine Starters – Main – Coffee My friend and I arrived at 19:00 to a busy but not overfull restaurant without a reservation and they accommodated us upstairs. Menus were produced and we ordered a bottle of white wine and a jug of water. 0rders placed for starters and 2 servings of the Italian style fish stew on the ‘Specials Board’ at 26.99 each. Tomato and chilli with promises of loads of different fish. The toss up was between a steak or the stew (which neither of us would cook at home). The table was dirty and needed wiping – this request was placed 3x on the young waitron who eventually produced a cloth slopping water from a bucket in the corner cupped in her hands where she half heartedly wiped the table with water dripping onto my friend’s lap. Hurried mop up with tissues out of my bag. The white wine was plonked on the table – next to the cooler – unopened and no glasses. Several attempts were made to attract the waitron’s attention. Eventually another bottle was produced opened and we were advised the waitron was under age and not allowed to pour wine. Perfectly acceptable had she produced an opener and the glasses with an explanation I would have been happy to help myself – we understand and appreciate these things. The starters arrived and were delicious! The chef then came out to see us and explained that there was no lobster for the stew – we asked for extra monkfish, he then said there was no monkfish left – but could help us with other white fish and crab claws. He said he was down to the last 2 portions, and he would ensure they were hearty. We were a bit concerned and suggested perhaps we settle for the steak which is always delicious. He assured us we had made the right choice and would enjoy the stew. The stews arrived and were ‘hearty’ if being crammed with the contents of a tin of crab claws is your definition of hearty. The promised ‘rich tomato broth with chilli and garlic’ was a watered down version of what was clearly less than a cup of the original broth left at the bottom of the pot topped with water. It was tasteless – lacking in hint of either chilli, wine, garlic or herbs – having lived in Malta I can assure you I have a deep understanding of Med cooking. I guess we were lucky we didn’t have the salty brine of the crab claws as the broth. It was inedible and we were starving so we kept adding salt and pepper – we were beyond the point of returning the food which was a mistake in hindsight. We skipped dessert – had coffees and left. The meal came to nearly £100.00. This was an expensive lousy experience. We paid a generous tip – because they accommodated us without a reservation. Take aways from the experience: • The restaurant service on a Sunday evening at 19:00 should be as good as it is on a Friday at 19:00 • Being a local and having eaten there several times – it is my first choice for a ‘good’ meal – don’t abuse the luxury of local support. • Train your waitrons to clean tables, by wringing out the cloth and not dripping water on your patrons. • Waitrons (even under aged ones) should at least carry a wine opener, and understand that wine glasses should be produced when delivering wine. • Your chef should know better and never, ever assume he can cut costs by selling the dregs from his kitchen. • A poor dining experience costs you more than you think. We would have ordered dessert, and more importantly returned for a second meal in the next week – WE DIDN’T! I have a friend coming from Ireland in November – do I risk taking her to the Anchor?"
