"I stopped by this restaurant while on a cycling route to have a few drinks. When we arrived, the bartender seemed like it was a bother to serve us. Another customer even made a comment about our drinks not being as "nice and simple" as his. We ordered a lager and a rum and coke. We decided to move away from the bar where some locals were expressing racist views to play cards. The bartender told us that they typically don't allow cards, but when we asked why, he mumbled something incomprehensible about how "some people don't like it." The atmosphere was incredibly hostile, and as someone who has worked in pubs during my teenage years, I always appreciated seeing new faces on a Monday night. This was a deeply strange experience with a rude and uninterested bartender. There are plenty of other pubs in the area that don't treat you with such disdain, I suggest going to them instead."

We visited for lunch, it was pretty quiet but we enjoyed our visit and the food was good. Hot, nice portions and well worth the money. Will definitely pop in again View menu

This pub is lovely. The food is great value and presented well, unlike many cheap chain restaurants that just slap some lettuce on the plate. I highly recommend it.

Went for lunch after a walk in the area and was charged nearly 6 pounds for a pint of Coke (the beer was only 4.80 a pint). Food was mediocre my burger was only just cooked and the plastic, processed cheese hardly made it a cheeseburger. At least the chips were good. Price per person: £10–20 Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 View menu

My partner dropped me at this pub to go for a drink while he was working around the corner. The toilet was just when you walk in, so i thought to use it first. This guy run shouting that I can't use the toilet and opening doors to the cubical WHILE I was on a toilet. Couldn't squeeze a word into his rant! Even if I would not have intented to buy anything, who does that? How miserable (and bored) you have to be to do that?? Service: 1

A group of us came to the Shepherd Inn for a funeral wake and we were made to be very welcome. There's a good selection of local beers on tap, and the pub itself is a characterful building that's been standing for over 500 years Scott was able to tell me some interesting stories about the history of the place as he pulled me a pint. A buffet of food was well prepared, I especially enjoyed the chicken wings, and the cake was excellent. When some flowers had been left behind after the wake had finished, the staff put these in the cooler room so that they didn't wilt before we collected them the next day, very good thinking on the roasting summer day we had. An honest pub with great atmosphere...

"We used to go to Whittaker's every weekend when visiting Brentwood, and used to recommend it ,it was always expensive, but it was good food and good service, but for the last few months it is going down hill fast! As soon as you go in now ,and...eventually noticed,we are told it will be ,or minutes wait for food,at this point many customers leave. This has happened every time we visit,so we ordered coffee, when we would have ordered food for four people, well we waited, and waited, for a coffee ,after twenty minutes I went up to the kitchen, and was told it's coming, where from Brazil!!!!!! And then nothing! Caught a waitresses eye and asked again, then we got it,and then told if we were not eating could we be quicker as there were people waiting!!!!! Anyone sitting down was told it was a long wait,so most left! That's money walking out the door! And they didn't seem to care! We discovered the reason for this terrible service,a buy came in with a massive deliveroo bag and left after ten minutes with a massive bag of food, they are now doing delivery and making the deliveroo a priority !!!!! They might think they are making a good living out of this, but the people actually there are money too! And paying extra for the privelidge of eating in. It cost more to eat i than take out! And the last time we were there, they lost our custom,so that was four,we saw another three leave,a other group of four,a couple, and that's customers ,and the as thing was no one from Whittaker's asked the people why they were going,or attempt to sort the problem out. We were sitting by the door and as it opened other customers were calling out don't bother again no staff were Interested. This cafe is packed in , more and more tables, with no room to get up or down from your table without backing Into other people, and nearly sitting on their laps. Not going back ,now they are doing deliveroo, actual customers who want to eat,are getting a very poor service. They have lost our custom for good,"
