"Villa Journal was an expected, but pleasant surprise. After visiting Castle Heiligenberg, we decided to drive back to Darmstadt for lunch, however on the way, we found this lovely restaurant. The place was very busy as it was lunch time and only one lady served...the food and took the orders. The food was very delicious and the place served quite large portions. We each had three courses and drinks and for three people the bill was euros. The restaurant is heavily decorated inside, but spacious. Locals seemed to come in for lunch, where they quietly read their newspapers. Parking is available at the back of the restaurant and it is free."

That's the best place in Seeheim to have breakfast lunch or dinner. Good food. Very-very-very friendly staff. Local wines. I spend a week in Seeheim. And half of this week in this restaurant. Strongly recommend!

The right name of this place Villa Journal! I've spent days in Seeheim. mornings and evenings I was enjoying hspitality of this place. Outstanding breakfast. Do not think to go somewhere else. In the evening sometimes place is fully booked so...call in advance. Staff is friendly. Food is German. Wines are cheap. Love this place. Come back definitely!

Great atmosphere with interesting decor. As a non smoker, I appreciated the smoking room was separate from the rest of the restaurant.I ordered the pork cutlets with mushroom gravy and fried mashed potatoes. The salad was okay but the rest of my meal was delicious and hearty. There was already a birthday party in progress. Another large table behind me was reserved. This restaurant was very popular. Limited parking in the parking lot.

"Finally after some recommendations we did visit this “Gasthof” (cozy nice warm place – more than a pub, but not an upscale restaurant). Located in Balkhausen you have to drive 20minutes from Darmstadt – a trip worth to be made. You are entering a room good for around 30 persons, wooden floor, warm light, stretched bar with beer from the tap, lots of spirits placed around (from different brands of give to the destilles from Staehlemuehle), rags filled with bottles of wine (mainly from the Pfalz).Better to make reservations – sure you will fail when you are strolling by.As it was our first time we went for the surprise menu – 5 courses. And we did mention: please reduce the portions as we like to enjoy nice food served on plates which are not too overloaded. The kitchen greeted us: fine smoked jam, salami with fennel, sundried tomatoes, crème off red beet and onions, olives, housemade bread – so much for small portions.1st course: beef tartar with ice from foie gras. Delicious.2nd course: baked pulpo with sauce from pancetta. Outstanding as the pulpo was thin and tender, the sauce impressive – probably a little bit on the salty side.3rd course: a king prawn served on an estragon sauce. Needless to say – superb again. The main course came with 2 (larger) pieces of veal, served on rice (prepared with cream and safran) sauce of (fresh) morrels. In the meantime – us being the leftover guests in the room – we talked a lot with the chef and maître d’, about his (and his partner / friend – the chef behind the kitchen door) where abouts, the wines from the Pfalz which – by the way – were perfectly matching our menu (served in 0.1l glases), the daily life, the paintings at the wall, the demand and additudes of guests, and so on. Not only this openness and friendly hosting but the service in total gave us a perfect feeling. The menu came to an end with a tarte of chocolate with small pieces of icecream (ginger, pineapple,…). He we missed the pieces with crispy textures. The check surprised us as well: such a menu priced with 55Euro and the wine usually around 6-8E (for 2) – it was the first time in this Gaststube, but we will return pretty soon during the upcoming weeks."
