"The Volkskammer is a quirky, somewhat eccentric, local restaurant that aims to capture the atmosphere of a local eating establishment in the DDR (Communist) era that ended in 1989.It was a good experience. I had the fortune of being with a group of people including a couple from the former East Germany who vouched for the "authenticity" of the place and suggested some menu items that fitted the experience. I was not disappointed.Red is the predominant colour of the Volkskammer and a portrait of the former East German leader Erick Honneker (1912-1994) takes pride of place on the wall. A "character" who I assumed to be the owner was keeping an eye on things om the Saturday night I attended. He was somewhat (!) eccentric but certainly added to the atmosphere. The Volkskammer is only a short walk from the Ostbahnhof station (back exit). Something a little different and well worth the effort to find and enjoy the food, beer and ambience of a bygone era."

The interior is in decent 1970 style. There is quite a choice of very common food not badly prepared but it lacks totally Schwung and motivation. More an old peoples home aťmofere: a pity

Feeling like dipping your foot into Communist-era East Germany without the danger of the Stasi arresting you? Stop into the Volkskammer to see Honecker's portrait still on the wall, the seal of the GDR on your menu, and Eastern bloc wines on the list. The food is decent if not fantastic, but it's more of the overall experience you're seeking. Not a bad place to go if you're planning to go to Berghain afterwards.

My boyfriend and I were staying at a hotel close by so we decided to go here for dinner. I had the Russian soup and traditional German boiled potatoes while my boyfriend had a fish dish. We were both really happy with our meals because the food was delicious and filling, all while staying within reasonably cheap prices. For all of our food plus two alcoholic drinks, we paid 35 Euro, which is pretty amazing if you ask me. View menu

We had an unforgettable Sunday afternoon in the Volkskammer. The food is super delicious and the service is just great! In a beautiful ambience you can eat alone, to the second, as a family with children or as a group good and cost-effective. It was delicious! Now in August we could sit outside, which was of course more beautiful. We were an international group of 14 people and all were completely satisfied. We can only recommend the Volkskammer!

I visited this charming restaurant on my second night in Berlin because I wanted traditional German food and the restaurant is less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel I was staying at.The restaurant is done up in a DDR theme which I enjoyed. I only know a few worlds of German but the staff was very friendly, patient, and courteous. I had the jagerschnitzel and pasta which I loved. This is a nice friendly restaurant whether you are alone or with family.

My friend and I were staying at the Ostel around the corner, and decided to check this out for lunch. There is an English menu if you are worried about ordering something weird. Also, the decor is fabulous. Our espresso macchiatos were fantastic and served in authentic DDR dishes. I had the boiled potatoes and while that sounds really weird, they were delicious. My friend had the goulash and recommends that. Also be sure to check out the orange toilets in the bathroom. View menu

Tips:- When you see that a restaurant is empty, that's the first clue that it's no good.Pros:- Friendly service. - Has an English menu. - Traditional German food (I always like to try local cuisine when travelling).- Nice aquarium. Cons:- Super, incredibly salty food. It's a year's worth of salt in one sitting. - The croquettes were salty. - Even the cheese was salty, how on earth do you make cheese salty?!- My girlfriend had the chicken, it came out crispy on the outside but parts of it on the inside were pink. - I had the jägerschnitzel, translated on the menu as escalope of sausage, realistically translated as three thick slices of breaded deep fried spam :(- The baby carrots were boiled...

I am not sure if I wisited this place unless I stayed in the Ostel hostel nearby, which was also DDR-themed. We were a big group of people so we booked a breakfast buffet for us. The food quality was average, not too bad, not too good, just a normal breakfast like ones which are offered in cheap hotels. They also offer some traditional German foods, bit if it is your first time in Germany, I'd find a better place to taste it.The atmosphere is look like they collected all DDR objects they could find in one place. Looks a bit like a museum, but I'd prefer bigger space with simplier design - place full of old pictures, furniture, artworks, there was a funny and scary mannequin of a woman in You...
