"Looking for a decent ale having been unsuccessful earlier in the evening, my neighbour suggested here. Known locally as a good pub for drinkers. For a wet evening, midweek, the place was quite full and we got a couple of seats around the corner, away...from the main bar. The decor isn't great but you come here to drink I guess. The extensive beer mat collection above the bar is a nice touch. Little glasses of beer next to the pumps and went for the darkest that wasn't a Porter, Barnsley something. As I'd had a girlfriend from Barnsley once, I gave it a try! It was OK, better than the Golden Hen' I'd had earlier. We struggle to find somewhere in Macc that serves good cask ale but this is one of the best. My friend John who used to run Porters was helping behind the bar, if only he was still there, that was a great pub."

A real delight for real ale punters. Plenty to choose from and excellent quality in the setting of a proper old fashion pub.

A proper traditional British pub, good selection of beers which are well kept, didn't eat but it's well worth coming here for a drink

Excellent range of real ales served by extremely friendly landlord. Previously never heard of Fiddlers Lancashire crisps. Pigged out on different flavours! Delicious. View menu

You will always get the best pint here every single time. Great staff and good crowd inside. Lunch time food is ridiculous cheap and worth a visit, especially the chips

Visited on the last Monday In October at lunchtime, the bar was full of locals mostly OAP's eating what I consider generous portions. The barman was friendly and chatty. Not being an expert on real ale it seems the place to go. Would call again...if in the area

Wanted a quiet drink with family and dog friendly and this place was perfect. Small place but real fire in the grate and a plethora of good ale at the bar with very pleasant service. Background music not blaring out but not usual rubbish either....Mixed clientele with chaps playing dominoes plus lads on a beer crawl but all content View menu

We checked into our hotel and then set off on our beer trail around town. The first stop was here when we had a really good pint and lunch. The pub soon got busy. It was a cold day but there was a lovely coal...fire. The fire was still lit when we returned much later to finish our evening before returning to the hotel. While we were there we had a lovely chat with the landlord and discovered the history of the place. A very pleasant couple of hours.

Dropped in here one Saturday afternoon with my elderly neighbour. He is and told me my Dad would like it in here, he's probably right although for me it was a little lacking in atmosphere. There's a good selection of beers including on this...occasion the extremely popular Salopian Oracle. As my parents live in Shropshire I know the beer quite well, it's popular all over and the barman knew the location of the brewery and engaged us in conversation. You can't say fairer than that, not many people in but good beer and a friendly landlord.

"I’ve never been before, we came yesterday for family dinner looking forward to a roast lunch dinner. The menu only had a choice of lamb or beef, not liking beef the choice for me was lamb. Within minutes a lady came to advise the lamb “had just sold out” I said I didn’t like beef but no other option was given and I therefore had to have the beef. The meal arrived the Yorkshire’s were not risen and burned. The vegetables were very nice the beef was shaped like a block mine was dry and over cooked. My husband had poured gravy all over his so he couldn’t tell but I don’t like a lot of gravy on my food and I could tell I gave my beef to him. We ordered a burger/cheese/bacon meal for our 12 year old, I made it really clear to the young girl to plead only out cheese/bacon/burger on and no healthy stuff no onions nothing she laughed and said she has a brother who is the same so understands we ordered the adult version as it said the children’s was for 10 years and under. My sons burger arrived with a load of crispy onions lettuce and tomatoes everything we had asked NOT to be added, I took the food off but he wouldn’t touch it having seen the salad was on it! After eating my main it was a massive disappointment to see the man behind us being served a roast lamb dinner when I was told it had all sold out!!!! I had ordered fruit crumble this was a massive portion in a bowl the crumble topping was nice but the fruit underneath tasted like melted jam rather than just gently cooked fresh fruit there was more fruit sauce than fruit making it quite sloppy I had a couple of mouthfuls and left it."
