"This charming restaurant located outside of town also has a take-away fish and chip shop attached. We sat in the bright and airy conservatory with lovely views, however, it was quite noisy and the sound echoed. Luckily, they offer a separate menu for those with gluten sensitivities, which was perfect for my wife who suffers from Coeliac Disease. We dined with a friend and enjoyed the Pie of the day (steak and white pudding with flaky pastry top), chicken schnitzel, and buttered chicken for my wife. All the dishes were beautifully presented, hot, and delicious. We even had room for dessert, which included a Cowshed sundae, ice creams and sorbet, and a gluten-free rice pudding with compote and sorbet. It was a very relaxed evening, aside from the noisy table. I have already made a reservation for next week, this time opting for indoor seating. The restaurant also features modern toilets and a spacious car park."

"This was our first visit and definitely not our last! The decor is tasteful, the place is spotless, and the staff are attentive and helpful. We shared a fish pakora to start, light and tasty, with a rocket side salad instead of the usual limp garnish. The mains were equally flavoursome, the chicken damask was sweet and slightly spicy with lentils and pineapple and the vegetable rice was delicious too. The chicken chilli balti was hot and spicy too. Overall, the attention to detail, the lovely cutlery and wine glasses, all add to the experience. A reasonably priced and very tasty meal."

"I came up to Newmachar from Perth to visit a friend and the Newmachar Hotel was a recommendation from her, being that I’d never been it had to be done! Upon arrival I was warmly greeted by a man called Mark and a young woman called Sophie both of them were top class and knew exactly what they were doing. Being a newbie in the hotel bar I was made to feel very welcome, a great range of draught beers, spirits, the lot! I can’t fault this place and its staff at all, everyone was kind and friendly! If you’re looking for a grade A place for accommodation, food or just a drink (same here! this is the gaff for you!! If I’m back up north I’ll be sure to pop in again, and I will be giving a high recommendation to my family and friends should they pass that way or fancy a little trip out of Aberdeen. Thank you my guys x"

"Poor service Drink order asked for a St. Clements got a orange and lemonade as they didn't have bitter lemon they didn't even give me the option of choosing something else and they forgot my husbands pint. Food advertised as fresh was actually restaurant...pre prepared catering pack supplies. Burger was rock hard chips were soggy, fettuccini with chicken and bacon in a cream wine sauce made me feel ill for which makes me think it had some of these ingredients in it Water, White Wine Carrots Rapeseed Oil, Mushrooms Modified Maize Starch, Onions, Cream (from Milk) Sugar, Acid (Lactic Acid), Garlic, Salt, Pasteurised Egg Yolk, Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum), Yeast Extract, Chives, Ground Black Pepper, Parsley. Disappointed but hey ho when I went there years ago I got undercooked chicken with greenish potatoes with eyes so their standard has improved slightly."

"2 adults, 2 kids a birthday treat for the youngest. Quick to take drinks order, however glasses are tiny, so beware! In the middle of taking our food order the waitress stopped to take a phone order, despite other staff doing nothing! Kids meals arrived then starters, chicken starter tough as leather, complained, nothing adjusted on bill. Half an hour or so passed and still no sign of the main. As it turns out, when the mains arrived, mine was simply a version of the kids meal with some sauce over it and a couple random slivers of veg, the fried rice was questionable. My partners choice was like chicken and gravy, nothing to write home about. Kids were getting bored and restless with all the time waiting. Poor service, first and last visit."

"Went there for our meal tonight the quality of the food you cannot fault, however the portion sizes are minimal. I’m not a big eater by any means but had I not asked for more chips I would have gone home hungry. Haven’t been here for many years and by all accounts it will be a long time before I re visit. However the current owner has the premises up for sale due to retirement whether it remains as a hotel once sold who knows. I feel it is over priced for what you get about 6.75 for a starter 14.95 for haddock you goujon’s and 6.75 for a sweet. The chips came in a small dish for my wife and I which I could have eaten myself !!! It may look a lot but believe me it’s not."

"We stopped here on our way through Deeside hoping to get a coffee and snack. I am coeliac and have a gluten free diet and most smaller places I usually struggle to get something to eat. However on this occasion we spoke to the waitress who said she was also coeliac and she gave me options of what I could eat, I opted for the omelette with gluten free toast and my mum had the veggie breakfast. It was clearly marked on the menu that they can cater for dietary requirements so it's always worth asking. The omelette was packed full of mushrooms and cheese and really tasty, and the toast was served with individual butters and marmalade's which is also great for me as no chance of regular toast crumbs in the butter! My mum's veggie breakfast was big, and looked really fresh, she said it tasted great. It also came with free tea or coffee. Additionally I heard the waitress re-iterate to the kitchen that my order was gluten free which is very reassuring. The cafe was quiet but we were seated quickly and our food came out fast with everything we had asked for so no need to keep asking for butter or sauce etc. Overall very impressed and if we're in the area again we will make a point to stop here for breakfast!"

"I would recommend not choosing the carvery at this restaurant. I was extremely disappointed, especially since I was looking forward to it. The Roast Beef was so tough that I couldn't even cut it with a knife, and they had run out of mashed and roast potatoes. We had to wait for a long time for our plates to be served with meat, and by the time the potatoes arrived, my food had already gone cold. The vegetables were only lukewarm, the stuffing was like rubber, and we didn't receive the extras we had paid for. The person serving at the carvery seemed overwhelmed and unhelpful. After being seated, we waited 20 minutes for someone to take our drinks order. We did complain and were given a 20% discount on our bill, which didn't make up for the fact that we couldn't even eat half of our meal due to its poor quality. However, I must mention that the server who took our complaint was very kind and handled the situation well. Despite the issues we faced, she was cheerful and dealt with our complaints professionally. I would suggest finding another restaurant for your Sunday lunch."

"This was our third visit to this location, but our first time dining in the restaurant. The restaurant was busy when we arrived, which is always a good sign, but we were seated promptly. To our surprise, a friendly staff member approached us and inquired if we were unsatisfied with our table, as a fellow diner had mistakenly reported this. We reassured the staff member that we were content with our table, but we were impressed by the attention to detail and customer service. We had a pleasant interaction with the staff before enjoying a delicious and well-prepared snack lunch served by efficient, friendly, and attentive staff. After our meal, we browsed the shop and found the staff to be very helpful as we made several small purchases. Overall, it was a fantastic retail and dining experience, made even better by the lovely staff."

"I've got one out of my mind last week. it took about 15-20 minutes to be ready when I phoned in the order, which is well considering that it was a Saturday night. a little thing was that the hand-anitary appeared on the doorway. to be empty, so it would be a good idea if they could replace it with a new bottle for customers to use when they are in the building. I went for the chicken bhuna that was delicious. we also had rice and naan, which were also delicious. the woman had praised vindaloo and she said it was very nice. the portion sizes were good, and the huh seemed really fresh. the bill came to £20.40 for two people, the good value for money. they do not accept credit card payments only so remember to take cash with them when they collect. I had only £20 on me so that the staff left me with the 40p that was kind of. overall I would rate this place 10/10, and I will definitely be back soon."

"My husband and I visited here for lunch while passing through the area. It was a later lunch and it was very quiet due to local holidays however still had a nice welcoming homely atmosphere. Friendly chatty staff with good knowledge of the menu, great food choices and great prices with prompt table service. Best burger and best baguette we have had in a LONG time, really good hearty home cooked food, was delicious! Cooked to perfection and nice portion sizes. Clean, tastefully decorated and nice spaces between tables, great if you had a pushchair or mobility aid, we also noticed it is dog friendly with a bowl of water and dog biscuits provided for the four legged diners. Great wee eatery with fantastic food and welcoming service. Will definitely visit again."

"We had a take away from Yan's this evening we were so disappointed with both meals. I had the Lemon Chicken it was so salty bits of the chicken were tough. Other meal was number 219 prawns with mushrooms he thought so much more onions than prawns tasteless. I am sorry to have to write this review but this was supposed to be a treat it certainly was not."

"we live in a beautiful village, gardenstown at banff in Scotland. we went to banff and searched for fish and chips. I had seen the lighthouse fish store at an earlier visit. we ordered large fish and chips and a part of sampi, £14.50 it advertises...a food in the facility. we had a look and the one seat was used by employees/family for their meal times, so we brought them back to the car to eat them. do not get their fish and chips from here! suspicious hygiene and not inviting. eating was best edible, but nothing else. I wouldn't see."

"Stayed here this week. The staff are all friendly and helpful. Susan the owner showed us to the room and told us everything we needed to know to settle in. Its an old building with lots of character features. The room and bed was comfortable and had everything we needed. Breakfast was good, lots of choice served freshly prepared to your table with care and speed. Dinner in the restaurant was very good. Lots of local ingredients. Lots of choice. Helpful and motivated staff. The food was well cooked and presented and very enjoyable and exceeded my expectations. We tried several items during the stay and the black pudding bon bons, the monk fish scampi, the Cullen skink and chicken linguinie were all deliciousI would definitely stay and eat here again. Well done Cameron and Susan. The other recent review that says avoid at all costs can't be trusted in anyway in my experience."

"Ten years ago, this review would have been quite different, but unfortunately, The Kilmarnock Arms bar food/restaurant was extremely disappointing. I can only assume that Covid, lack of staff, and inexperienced kitchen workers have had a significant impact on the quality of the food. During our first attempt to dine in the restaurant, we were puzzled to find it empty despite being told they were fully booked. Despite making reservations, we were seated in the bar area, which was also empty. It seemed clear that the lack of staff was the reason for this. We ordered pea and ham soup, followed by a seafood platter for my husband and a chicken schnitzel for myself. The soup was delicious, but the mains were disappointing. The seafood on the platter was all deep-fried and unrecognizable, with the crab cake lacking any crab. My husband only ate half of his meal. My chicken schnitzel was more of a breaded piece of chicken smothered in cheese sauce, served with spiced chips and boiled vegetables. Even the tasty soup couldn't salvage our dining experience. I would not recommend The Kilmarnock Arms for food, but they do serve a delicious pint of beer."
