"very disappointing after we have been local in this pub for years, the new owners have taken an apology for the younger generation of the pub, we have always spent huge amounts of money in this pub over the years and suddenly we are welcomed...with a frosty reception, said we are not allowed to use the outside heating, followed in the toilets and said we are not welcome here or the faggot. After we visited a menu at 2.30 in the afternoon (kitchen closes 3), we were told that they did not eat, although tables around us eat and receive food. we are more than happy to take our good morals elsewhere and to support other local businesses in the region, as we are always greeted with smiles and open poor. I recommend people to avoid this disappointment of an establishment at all costs and their money in the hands of happy faces on places such as bricks or olive and wine grapes. the younger generation is the one who supported this pub during its hardest times and during the lockdown, we might eat here twice a week. the wine leaf has been my partner before place for 18 years, now it is 31. Unfortunately, our friends have made similar experiences in recent months, and it is a shame that they try to make such a big change of habit in an extremely small town. word goes quickly to this place and I am worried that they all have their priorities wrong. it is a real shame that they will turn away willing, loyal customers. I hope that this review is understood as an honest feedback from loyal customers who want to revive this site."

"This was a return visit, much looked forward to, to celebrate a family special birthday. Booked several weeks in advance, specifically requesting a table in the bar dining room for 1pm, Sunday lunch and would order the roasts 2 days before. Knew something was wrong...when they rang asking us to confirm table was booked for 1.45 and they said we had booked duck. Said no that is not us, but it was clear from their confusion that they had not made a note of our booking, but said ‘no problem, we would have a table. I would add here that a deposit had been paid at the time of booking. So we arrived on time as booked, and instead of being seated where we had booked, our party of six were shoved into a tiny corner in the main very crowded bar clearly not a dining table more a wide plank of wood. None of the other tables in this bar were used for eating. The bar was crowded with drinkers standing up, (no social distancing whatsoever) and when we sat down were literally squashed together, our seated backs were being jostled and shoved by drinkers, our heads knocked and and drinks spilt onto us. The noise of shouting behind us was deafening. The table was not suitable at all to eat at it was only large enough for drink glasses. When the food arrived, the veg and meat dishes and wine bottle had to be placed on the windowsill. We had no veg until we asked if there should be some and the girl said she didn’t know but would check. When the veg arrived the meat was nearly cold. We asked for more gravy hoping to disguise the cold meat, but that never appeared. We asked to be moved to a proper table but were told that they were all taken, no doubt due to our original booking having been lost. The food was very poor two tiny joints of meat between six the pork was cold and the beef was cold and raw in the centre. They had clearly been sitting in the kitchen for a very long time. Those tiny ‘joints’ cost £150!, a total rip off disgrace from a quality butcher, they would not have cost more than £20 total. We had not been asked how we wanted the beef cooked. When the bill came, we found that the prices of the roasts were significantly more than menu on website and on checking were told that it costs money to change the website! The woman at the bar rudely grabbed the bill and said I’ll change it, and then slammed it down on the bar top. To make matters even worse, on arrival home, found that the deposit paid had not been taken off the bill, although this was rectified. We will never return to this place despite it always having been our favourite and cannot recommend it whatsoever."

"I visited the Weald and Downland Museum in early August. I did take sandwiches with me but had left them in the car while I walked around. When lunchtime arrived I didn't feel like walking back to the car so decided to use the museum's café. This is easy to find but is outside the museum itself. Your ticket allows you to go out and in as many times as you wish so visiting the café it isn't an issue. The café is a modern building and is clean and tidy. Outdoor and indoor seating is available. It was a nice day so the tables outside were in short supply. At the order point there was a bit of a queue which moved quickly. There are two service windows but, due to the layout, this isn't obvious unless the staff tell you about the second window. You've got to walk past the main queue to get to the second window. Better signage (or barriers might help position people so that they can see there's two windows served by a single queue. The food ordering procedure is that you should identify the table you wish to sit at then order at the window. You're given your drinks there and then but the food is brought to your table. There's no menu on display at the order point; these are on the tables and are on a clipboard. On the day I visited there was an advert on the clipboard too the menu was underneath. There was also a row of clipboards on a counter beyond the order windows but these weren't obvious. I assume that these too had the menu on them. The food choice was fairly limited and there were few sandwiches actually on display. There are other made to order sandwich options on the main menu. The entire menu fits on a single side of A4 paper. The menu makes it plain that some items are vegan and/or gluten free already, other items (which are identified can also be made vegan or gluten free to order. I selected the Cornish pasty which comes with sautéed potatoes and (baked beans. I was then asked if I wanted steak or cheese onion. (It seems that the café calls every pasty a Cornish pasty irrespective of what's in it. I had the steak version. The pot of tea for one comes with a generously sized jug of milk. However, it's a single teabag in a small pot. There was sufficient in the pot for three standard sized cups but as is always the case in cafe's these days, the tea was warm rather than hot.The pasty arrived fairly quickly and I was asked if I wanted any sauce. There was no offer of salt and pepper; there wasn't any on the table. However, I found that the sautéed potatoes had been salted before they came out and they were fine as they were. I did find them slightly al dente, though, and thought that the potatoes could have done with a little more parboiling before they were fried. The serving size was reasonable. The pasty was a reasonable size (for comparison it was about the size of a standard Ginster's pasty , reasonably well filled, hot enough and tasty. The beans were served in a ramekin and were hot enough. The pasty cost £7.50 and the tea a further £2. If I've understood correctly, museum members receive a discount in the café and at the other coffee point in the museum. In comparison, my local pub charges £7.50 for a fish finger with cos lettuce tartare sauce sandwich and puts a ten percent service charge on top. On that comparison the cafe's prices are reasonable. In summary: reasonable portion size and quality, Café dining and décor, and Price about what I expected from a museum café."

"We booked to stay at Crouchers hotel purely because we wanted to eat at the Potager’s restaurant. We were advised about the Xmas parties and the mission until late at the hotel which we fine with. We didn’t however understand how much this would affect the rest of our stay. On our first night we went to the bar for a drink. On the website the hotel advertises a happy hour when we went to the bar we were told that this was not available and the hotel only had a limited cocktail list and we could only have a table in the bar for an hour because of the parties. Given that we had planned our evening round this, it was very disappointing. On our second day at the hotel after leaving breakfast we were asked to give our dinner choices. We were very surprised by this. When querying this with the hotel we were told that the Al a carte menu was not available for us and we were limited to the Xmas menu. If we’d known this on booking we would not have chosen to stay at the hotel. We decided to cancel our booking with the restaurant as the Xmas menu was rather uninspiring and not at all what we thought we were getting upon booking. Given this is the first time my husband and I have managed to have some time away in 2.5 years, I am very upset at this. Upon explaining to reception staff they frankly didn’t care a less. I guess Xmas parties are more important to them than their hotel guests. I would never normally write a negative review but was very disappointed with our experience at Crouchers and it has motivated me to do it on this occasion. We paid to stay in the best room in the hotel but despite this the hot water ran out and my husband had to have a cold shower. Again upon reporting this reception showed very little interest. If you are looking for a special dinner and hotel stay I would not recommend Crouchers or the Potagers!"
