"I went to The Fairie Tree for Mother’s Day after booking a table four weeks in advance. We were seated quickly and our drink and food orders were taken promptly. The menu offered basic pub grub, nothing fancy or a la carte. My three teenagers ordered haddock and chips, while I opted for the chicken and leek dish. A large party of 8 was seated nearby and their starters arrived quickly. However, we had been waiting for 20 minutes since ordering our food. After waiting for 50 minutes to an hour, I finally had to flag down a waitress to inquire about our food. She discovered that our order had not gone through to the chef due to a computer error, without offering an apology. Our food eventually arrived after another 20 minutes, which was decent but nothing special. When my son wanted dessert, it took another 10-15 minutes to get someone's attention. He ordered sticky toffee pudding, which again took 30 minutes to arrive even though the restaurant was not busy. We were about to give up on the dessert when the chef informed the waitress it was ready. There was no apology for the delay. When we asked for the bill, we didn't receive any sort of reduction for the poor service. The staff did not seem interested in addressing our concerns, and overall the service was slow and unfriendly. The food was overpriced and mediocre. I do not plan on returning as the experience was disappointing."

"Received a voucher for my birthday in 2020 (which was extended due to covid) when I tried to book the person on the phone was extremely abrupt (I phoned on the Tuesday asking if there was possibly any space for Wednesday; admittedly they voucher does say 72 hours notice however I thought I would see if they were free; which she was very abrupt in telling me that there was no change in the 72 hours which was fine as we just were working around days off). Which then meant we booked for the Saturday. We arrived 5 minutes early and on signing in initially the waitress took a while to find the booking however then found it and highlighted it on the sheet…we were asked to wait in the bar, where we waited and a separate member of staff said they had no record of the booking however would “try and squeeze us in” where we then seen only 4 other occupied tables. Staff were inattentive, didn’t have the basics of decaf tea stating “can’t find it” after saying they had it, then brought tea without milk….then when the stand was brought over we noticed ours looked nothing like anyone else’s, half the cakes; which were stale, scones which were flat and soggy and an uneven amount of bland sandwiches. Nobody attended to the table at all during our time there. On leaving to pay for the soft drink we had (as one person doesn’t drink tea/coffee which most places would alter an alternative drink free of charge not here almost £3 for a soft drink) as the place was not well manned, I checked the booking sheet as I wanted to know what was highlighted when I said my name had booked almost 5 days earlier to arrive and be told there was no record and would be squeezed in with an afternoon tea that certainly represented that only to discover my name was on the list however had been spelt wrong (not that I was ever asked the spelling on booking or arriving so that’s totally beside the point I was actually booked in) and it was clear as it even stated type of voucher I had quoted on the phone and correct number of people! Very poor wouldn’t return or recommend especially not as a gift as we felt a complete inconvenience first and last time visiting! Whilst there is a lift to get there I also feel for people with disabilities/Prams it’s an inconvenience to get to narrow corridors and a bit of a walk the only way we entered/left the building there was stairs Be mindful of the parking to enter your details at reception staff don’t tell you about this but it’s well signed in the carpark machine is at hotel reception which we had to go to anyway to find out where we were going."

"Bit disappointing. We had breakfast here in April ‘23 for convenience, as we stayed at the Premier Inn which we could not fault. The breakfast however was disappointing. Non-dairy milk was provided on request, someone then had to go and look for it, open a pack, gave me enough for one drink, and then put it away again, after having waited for it the first time for a while at the counter, I did not bother with a second drink. It was nowhere near as nice as my coffee machine at home. As the ‘all you can eat’ is no longer self-service, we waited for about half an hour to get our order in, making us a bit late and rushed for our timed-entry at the castle. We’d long finished our drinks and croissants before we finally got to order. I had mentioned earlier to the waiter that my croissant had had a hair in it. He said to put the hair in the bin, I told him the hair was baked into the croissant, he then just pointed at the bin, and told me to have an other one, but I was a bit put off by then. Later someone mentioned that you can also ask to have your croissant warmed up, but this was not apparent from any sign. When my breakfast came it had a bit of cooked plastic into the egg, like from bacon wrapping, I didn’t bother mentioning it, just fished it out, had my breakfast and went. Sausages were nice, and had it been buffet I would have had an other one, so I imagine they save a lot of money by running it this way instead! The rest of the food was pretty mediocre. I won’t be back for breakfast in a hurry, but had a lovely night at the Premier Inn though. As this is very close to the center, if walking is not a problem for you, I’d go somewhere else!"
