"Friends took us here after a visit to the cinema. I wasn't expecting Italian food to be as spicy and unfortunately it did distract from the normal Italian flavours in used to and the wine. It was nice food, cooked very well. Starter was the best part followed closely by dessert and the main trailing in a distant 3rd place. There's no sound deadening which the place definitely needs; sound bounced about and it was loud. I'd return to try something else but not sure this would be a familiar haunt. Vegetarian options: The dish I had, Penne Arabbiatia, was too spicy for my liking, especially with the foods subtle flavours and pinot wine."

"We were able to get a walkin table on what seemed to be an otherwise busy night. The food was great, the atmosphere is lovely. "Driving past, looked nice from outside, popped in for lunch, nice back ground music playing, appeared a homely pub, pub grub food at reasonable prices, Food took 50 mins to arrive, like they had gone out to slaughter a cow, or pluck a chicken! even tho pub wasn't busy) when food finally arrived was home cooked and nice, but should of been informed of the delay from the start, otherwise would of ete else where, locals at bar got an apologee, we didn't!"

"I ordered some sushi and noodles for the evening dinner with my family. Since we normally order from Osaka we decided to give another restaurant a go and never again. The rolls were fine (rice was ok, good hosomaki, remaking soft but we didn’t...expect the seaweed to stay crispy since we order delivery, alright uramaki with avo and salmon on top however the sashimi on top of the roll was very thick and in places hard to chew which is okay, can’t blame the salmon). My vegan temakis were right next to the salmon roll, in one box, even though they could have been put with the other vege maki... Overall rolls were fine. However the noodles were an atrocity... the noodles we received were simply not edible, mashed up in a tiny container, looked like someone had to sit on them in order for them to close, prawns on top of the noodles were super soft and wet since they were on the noodles and not in a separate container. The noodles themselves were falling apart with the slightest touch, as if they were cooked for way too long, I could count maybe three pieces of veg in the dish, overall- a disaster... but the best part starts when deliveroo connected me to the restaurant I was basically told to stop lying, that what I say isn’t true and they won’t do anything about the fact that the noodles are straight up disgusting because no one ever complains about their food and the chef and the boss agree to send another order of noodles if I pay for them because otherwise it’s sending food for free. Our conversation lasted for 18 minutes during which I was called a liar, I was told to stop, I was told that there can’t be anything wrong with the food and that noodles were perfect they were perfectly jammed into a tiny box and flavourless mush instead of noodles... After 18 minutes very unhappily the man I spoke with agreed to refund the money for the noodles, apologised after calling me pretty much an idiot to his boss as they shouted back and forth without muting the mic so I could hear everything loud and clear. Would not recommend the take away service."

"Food is a bit over priced for what it is. I had a cheeseburger and fries. Nothing fancy about it so didn't warrant the £16 price tag. Dessert was lovely but obviously a microwave job. (Sticky toffee pudding) My friend wanted a caramel latte but was offered vanilla as replacement. When it arrived it tasted of cinnamon. We reminded the waitress that we'd ordered vanilla, she said yes. It's spiced vanilla But we hadn't been told that. We had to ASK her to replace it! Not great customer service. Lovely interior and well designed. Very large place with big garden out back- they had tables blocking the door way so not sure how you'd get out there?????"

"We have been here before and enjoyed the cote de Boeuf, and have also enjoyed the Reading restaurant. We decided to celebrate my wife's birthday here with family and were a little disappointed. We did have a problem with the slow service which is why I have marked it down to 3 stars. I don't like to do this because the waiter and waitress were very polite and pleasant but we were waiting for some time to place the first drinks order, so long in fact that I had to go and find the waitress. As the restaurant wasn't busy, we were very surprised at how long our food order took to come through, which did spoil our experience to a degree and did cause a fair bit of discontent at the table. I do like the restaurant, and there was no problem with the food or the ambience. We will certainly return and hope that the slow service was an exception."

"This is a lovely place to come and eat with friends or family. I visited my sister and she had booked us a table. We were greeted by a very polite and friendly lady who directed us to our table and explained how things work as she handed us our menus. We ordered drinks and were left to chat and browse the menus. The place felt very homely and it was easy to feel relaxed. The menu featured a good round of choice for most people and prices looked very reasonable. We were not hassled for our menu choices like some places. The waitress popped by to inquire after a good while but had been around not far away if we had needed her sooner. She was very friendly and polite with just the right amount of small talk to make us feel that she was pleased we were here. (sorry.. did not recall her name We all ordered different meals, but each one was delicious and well prepared. Good even temperature and good taste. We all ordered dessert too which was also very nice. Portions are generous so there was no skimping there. Toilet facilities looked clean and well maintained. Would recommend this place highly. Nice atmosphere, lovely staff, good food and great prices :"

"I ate at this pub as part of a group in December we ordered from the or course Christmas menu. The group did not feel that they were greeted appropriately by management; we arrived mins early for pre meal drinks which...seemed to be a problem for them even though the table was ready. Reasonable selection of beers, Ringwood brewery ‘Razorback’ acceptable, slow service. Several choices for each course was offered, I went for the ham and black pudding terrine followed by beef bourguignon for the main course. courses: and courses: The first course was totally inadequate, very small portion, little taste and served too dry. The main was flavoursome with rich gravy but the portion size was hopelessly small for a main with minimal supporting vegetables. Dessert was of a higher standard but all served up several minutes before the cutlery arrived! A request for tea/coffee to round off the meal was acknowledged by the server but nothing materialised so we finished up and paid our bills at the bar (slow). No gratuity on this occasion I’m afraid so off home for a much needed sandwich!! It’s going to be a lottery here depending on your choice on the menu. Caution when choosing. So the summary is: below average service with a poor value meal."

"A really terrible start. We had a table booked but on arrival we were kept waiting for ages before anyone greeted us. Very rude as staff clearly saw us but ignored us completely, avoiding eye contact and any acknowledgement. We were about to walk out when finally someone came up. No apology for the wait and we were shown to a table right next to a large, noisy group. We asked if we could sit somewhere quieter and were told no, they were full. Clearly they were not as we could see other free tables which we pointed to. There then followed a consultation between a couple of colleagues, and finally we were given another table a bit further away. Luckily after all this things improved. The food was the usual good Pizza Express standard and the waiter was polite and checked everything was ok. Then at the end it was a bit strange as the staff were all getting their coats and leaving while we were still finishing our coffee. This was at only 9.30! We had another wait to pay as we were trying to attract the attention of one of the few remaining members of staff. It seems like the staff are really not happy working there and just want to get out asap!"

"I had visited the Pheasant under the old management a few times and it seemed to be quite a poorly run establishment with a bit of a grimy aesthetic. I found out recently that the place was being renovated under new management so I came by to check it out, the place has done a full 180, it has a warm and welcoming aesthetic now and looks like somewhere I could actually visit regularly. The new management is really friendly and apparently they are launching a new food menu soon which I am excited to come back to try! Really excited to see what comes of this local pub which was neglected for so long."

"I have to say this place really did suprise me in a very good way indeed. Now call me old fashioned or cynical if you like, but I'm a firm believer that Jack of all trades is usually Master of none. Well this place just completely disproves that thesis entirely. Yes the shop is clean, tidy and serves proper Kebabs as well as proper Pizzas, Burgers and my beloved Fish Chips. So as enticing as the other options clearly were I just had to check out the Fish Chips. Two sizes on offer but went for the regular as a first time customer. Wow! Excellent really really excellent indeed. A generous fresh piece of Cod, battered and drip drained for a few seconds in front of me (so no excess batter to fry) before going into the fryer. The chips again were cooked fresh and were as good if not better than any I've had in the south for a very long time. A proper chip from a proper spud variety and definitely carefully selected for suitability and quality. The fish though was superb really a very generous size, cooked to perfection and pure white. Again as good as anything I've had in the south in a long time and way better than most for sure. I'm not huge on fish cooked in oil my preference is beef dripping. However for fish cooked in oil it doesn't get better than this. The batter was excellent, light, crispy and not oily at all. The chips really really good. I will definitely go again for sure and look forward to a repeat of the same and to try their kebabs too which also looked very good. They look to make their own breads too so will review once tried. Going back to the fish and chips my only criticism would be the vinegar which is white and sprayed on. Not very strong at all really and the only piece of the jigsaw missing for me to be honest. I guess you could always take your own as few places have proper traditional vinegar these days. Plenty of staff, all very polite and helpful to boot. One touch that was also very nice to go with my takeaway was the quality of the heavy quality paper bag and the two good size prepacked clean up wipes that are complimentary. This is clearly a good find, slightly out of the way location and you'd not stumble across it you'd need to find it through Google. When you do though you'll be pleased you did as it's very good indeed. On street parking outside and very much well worth a visit. Excellent!"

"A friend and I stayed here for the Burghley Horse Trials, which was about a 30 minute drive away. The hosts Daena Leo, who have been running The Bull Inn for the last few months were fantastic. They are both really friendly and accommodating. We wanted to be away to Burghley before breakfast on Saturday, so they very kindly gave us a box of fruit and pastries on Friday night to take with us. Room was clean and comfortable, food in the pub restaurant was nice as was the cooked breakfast. Food, beer and room prices were good value. Locals were really friendly and welcoming too. We were really happy with our stay and will definitely stay here again when we are next in the area."

"had a very nice meal here with hubbie and friends. the personal was excellent. I complained that the prosecco did not blow enough, and they opened a new bottle. Funny enough, that was not better, so the only safe option was to order the champagner and it was really good. for the gloomy I ordered the Christmas pudding. Although the taste was beautiful, it wasn't like the Christmas puddings I used to be. I wanted it to be easier. at least they took it away and tried it again. no success. but I must say that the employees were very professional and have treated the problem in excellent wise."

"Been here a number of times now, and can confidently say I 've had more consistently good meals here than places like Miller and Carter etc, and for a far better price. Here 's a summary: Food: Spiral cut fillet last time out very tasty, my partners standard ribeye also v good and both cooked pretty much as desired, although getting the exact rareness can be patchy. Chateaubriand also very good in value and taste. Service: Always very friendly staff despite being stretched thin they really do try their best and service has only once been noticeably slower than expected. Value: Excellent. Sign up to emails and every few weeks we get offers for money off. Also 25% NHS/Blue light discount. Makes an already reasonably priced menu genuinely very well priced. All in all I recommend highly if looking for a better value alternative for good steak around Reading than the 'bigger names ' like M&C where you 'll pay more for the same or less!"
